We are here at the Hilton Düsseldorf, where we are hosting YCS Düsseldorf 2, at least for Saturday. Kristoffer Nielsen is one of the guys, who couldn’t get into YCS Düsseldorf 1 anymore, but he seems quite pleased to be here. If you want to find out what he thinks of how we solved the situation, please read on to find out.

Kristoffer Nielsen

Hi Kristoffer, thank you for taking your time to talk to us. The first thing we would like to know is, how did you get in touch with Yu-Gi-Oh!?
I started when I was 13 years old. A friend of mine, Ricki Madsen, introduced me to the game. At that time, I was a very good soccer player and quit it for Yu-Gi-Oh!. He was also the one who got me into travelling and going to bigger events. Unfortunately, he quit the game a few years ago, but I’m still hooked. As I said, I even quit soccer for the game. I’ve always been a very competitive person and like to take part in tournaments. My goal is to become the best in what I do and build my legacy.
How come you are playing in YCS Düsseldorf 2?
Well, usually I register at Friday, but for this event I couldn’t. I still had to decide which Deck to play. So, when entering the venue this morning I was informed that there were only a few spots left in the YCS. I couldn’t make it in time! I was afraid I might not be able to play this weekend, but you guys came up with this solution.
How do feel about YCS Düsseldorf 2?
Actually, I’m surprised that there are so many good players in this event, because most of them usually register on Friday. I feel like this is the more competitive environment than the other YCS. It doesn’t matter how many players there are, it matters how many good players there are. And I’m not surprised about the numbers. After Utrecht I was pretty sure we will set a new record for this event. YGO is growing a lot at the moment. At our locals we a have a lot more players than before. Almost every month we have new players entering the game and I like to teach new players the game.
What Deck are you running for this weekend?
I went with Pendulum for this event. Marcello told me to play it and the Deck performed really well during preparations. Even though this was only Round 1 I feel very confident with it and hope the Deck will lead me to my first YCS victory. I feel like it is long overdue. The Deck is definitely not the obvious choice, but I feel like in a field of Salamangreat and Thunder Dragons I don’t want to be too dependent on the dice roll. The Deck has a good Match-Up against all the current meta-decks and I’m counting on the surprise factor. I feel like most players will not be prepared to the Match-Up. It’s still pretty good and it can still pull off all the crazy combos it was able to, back in the days.
How do you feel about the current metagame
I think it is pretty good. I like an environment, where there are a lot of Decks that you can actually play and win with. People are not forced to play certain Decks in order to be competitive, instead you have the freedom of choice. This feels pretty good. And I’m sure that it’s good for the game. If there are a lot of viable Decks in the metagame preparation is crucial. Side Deck space is limited and you have to make assumptions going into an event. Basically, you have to guess which Decks will be played the most and prepare accordingly. That’s a skill not everyone is capable off, but it’s an essential part of preparation and success.
Do you have any tips for new Duelists on how to improve?
I guess I will tell you how I did it. Maybe that helps other players as well. I started with going to YouTube to watch Decks, Feature Matches and all Yu-Gi-Oh! related stuff that I could find. I watched good players on how they played the game and tried to learn as much as possible. I used all the resources that were available to me back then and that’s what helped me move on and improve. Please bear in mind that it takes a lot of time to get there.
Do you have any final words
Big shoutout to JY Sharif and Andrew Swan and all the people that I travel with!
