Creative Decks in Round 4

I took a closer look at the first 50 tables while Round 4 was underway. I saw a lot of Mermail Decks, fighting it out with Dino / Macro Rabbit Decks, the Firefist family as well as a couple of Prophecy Decks. On top of that, every 5 tables, I saw a slightly more creative approach that I’ll introduce to you in this article!

Next to them sat Marcel Leucker, relying on the Prophecy archetype and Annachiara Rigo, the most successful female Duelist at this point in time, running Mermails.

The next 2 tables after Soner and Peter featured 2 Mermail Decks piloted by Tony Lee and Hugo Robin, who had to go up against Alessandro Donato (running Firefist) and Denis Beqiri (running Prophecies).

I’ll definitely take a closer look at Rudolf’s build; he’s been around ever since 2004 and it’s nice to see that one of the veterans is still enjoying the game. On top of that, he’s doing so with a Deck that can also be called a “classic”.

Most of the players that already have a “YCS Winner” title under their belt relied on Mermails today, so instead of asking them about their specific choices, I’ll inquire how to beat the Deck. Maybe we’ll learn about some new and powerful Side Deck ideas that can help you turn the tides against the creatures from the ocean?

On table 20, I saw one of the first Hero Beat Decks, piloted by Yanis Benkhedda, right next to Jeff Sylvestre’s take on the Monarchs. Table 23 featured Thibault Guérin, also relying on Heroes, rounding out the more creative Decks among the top 25 tables.

Chris Vinke’s Deck featured a few Gladiator Beasts, but that wasn’t obvious on first sight as he’s also running quite a couple of the Firefist monsters. Sebastien Gonzalez made it obvious that he’s an exception to the “veterans playing Mermails” train that’s going strong this weekend; he also relied on a Hero Beat Deck.

Next, I saw the surprise of the event (at least so far in), with Sergio Cavaliere running a Hieratic Deck! We’ll definitely check out this Deck!

While I wouldn’t give in to players claiming they were running the “most bloated Mermail Deck of the weekend” (the current record lists 53 cards), I had to admit by Antoine Richebourg playing Gadgets as well as Alexandre Gayot and Mikcael Da Silva, both running Six Samurai. All of these players still have a perfect record and I hope they can keep going for a few more rounds.

The last few players I’d like to give a shout out are Marc Tavra, also running Heroes, Ibrahim Polat, relying on Grapha and pals as well as Piotr Slusarski whose Deck seems to try to [xyz] Rank 5 Monsters as fast as possible. How it does that exactly, he wouldn’t tell, so I guess we’ll need to take a closer look at some point later.
