Deck Analysis: Asier Ugaldea’s 3 Axis Fire Fist

In just a few minutes, the Top 64 will be underway. I used the time while the final standings were up to catch up with Asier Ugaldea. He told me about his interesting Deck yesterday already, however, his tournament didn’t quite go as planned. He’s currently trying his luck in the Public Events which gives him the chance to change his Deck in between events and come up with the perfect build. Asier, tell us a little more about your Deck!
Asier: It’s a Fire Fist Deck with a unique touch – I heard that most players call it “3 Axis” as you try to go for Rank 3 Xyz Summons.

The cards I added had to satisfy one condition: Only boast 200 DEF. If they fulfil that, you can bring them back to the field with [ff spirit]. In a way, the card acts like a “[tgu] from the Graveyard”.

Once you’ve successfully Set Up this combo, you can go for [ff leo]. The beauty of it is that it allows you to return [ff spirit] to your hand, so you can perform this little combo over and over again and grind out games that take longer than you want them to.

An alternative play, when you don’t have any Fire Monsters in your Graveyard, is to [synch] [ff horse] to the field. Both are like a [sangan] for the archetype since they allow you to search your Deck for a Fire Fist Spell Card. That will often be [tenki] which can then search your Deck for the card you need, which, in most cases, happens to be [ff spirit]!
Asier Ugaldea is running Fire Fists with a unique touch!

There’s a lot of synergy going on in this Deck! You mentioned that there’s even more going on?
Asier: Yes, I also run 2 copies of both [blaster] and [burner]. I can discard [burner] together with 1 of the Fire Monsters to [ss] [blaster] to the field and then once again follow it up with [ff spirit]. Then we’re back to square one and able to bring out [ff leo] and start with the combo all over again!
You didn’t do that successful this weekend, what happened?
Asier: Most of my losses were against Dragon Rulers. The [df] that I introduced from the Side Deck couldn’t do as much as I was hoping for.
My combo is very weak against [maxx] and [veiler] and many opponents had them in my crucial turns. So I couldn’t go off with the combo as often as I wanted to and that’s what cost my dearly.
Having played with the Deck a lot this weekend, what would you change if you could?
Asier: I would max out the copies of [droll] and drop [mf]. Once [ff chick] will be out, I’ll replace [ff hawk] and [ff raven] with 2 copies of it. It should give a Deck a huge push! It speeds up the Deck additionally and provide you with all the searching effects that you could ever hope for!

You’ll then need to add [poa] as you’ll empty your Deck in just a few turns.
Did any of your friends help you with the Deck?
Asier: I want to thank my friend Balbino Gonzalez who helped me a lot when it came to putting the Deck together!
So there you have it. A Deck that’s just missing 1 crucial piece to make a stronger showing at the top tables. Or is there another way to make it work, even without [ff chick]? Maybe we’ll see a Duelist showing up with a slightly improved version at some of the upcoming events and he’ll end up on a more positive record?
