Deck Analysis: Benedikt Junk’s Scraps

Today is a special day for Benedikt Junk; it’s his birthday. I promised to give him a special treat, a Deck Analysis. Considering that Junk is playing Scrap, some might say this is an invitation for a bad word play, but I’m confident I can resist.

I have to say I’m surprised to see you running Scraps again. If I remember correctly, it’s one of your signature Decks, right?
Benedikt: Yes, exactly! I advanced to the knock out portion of last year’s European Championship with it and wanted to give it another try since I wasn’t sold on the idea of running a Deck that many other Duelists would play as well.
[nbsp]
What was your main goal when it came to putting the Deck together?
Benedikt: I tried to design it in a way to ensure I had positive match-ups against both the Dragon Rulers as well as the Spellbooks.
[nbsp]
How did you accomplish that?
Benedikt: The good thing about Scraps is that you have enough space to add cards that work well against the popular Decks. Basically, all the Traps that players tend to play in the Side Deck made it into my Main Deck: [gozen], [asf] and [iiw].

It doesn’t really affect my own strategy; in fact, it’s quite the opposite – they complement it. I always had troubles against [bth] and now, thanks to [iiw], I got protection against it!

If I draw into multiples that I don’t need, I can get an extra use out of them thanks to [planter].
That’s the first time I’ve heard something along those lines. What was testing the Deck like?
Benedikt: Well, even though players are somewhat familiar with the archetype, you still have a lot of opponents that don’t know exactly how it works. You can use that to your advantage and catch them off-guard. Nothing of my main plays is completely out of the ordinary – a [scrap chimera] allows for easy Synchro Summons, etc.[br]
Nothing you haven’t seen before, unless you’ve literally never seen the Scraps in action, which seems to be the case for quite a few people in attendance today.

In the first round, I opened with [rai oh] and [asf] in my back row and passed play. I activated the trap during my opponent’s Draw Phase, to which he just replied: “Are you kidding me?!” He played Spellbooks and I went on and won that match.
[nbsp]
Does that mean you also had to come up with the whole concept and tweaks on your own?
Benedikt: Yeah, I basically came up with the whole stragegy on my own. Most of my friends don’t know how the Deck works exactly, so they weren’t much help.
Alright, thank you so much for the quick chat! We hope you’ll do well on your birthday and make another appearance in the Top 32 tomorrow!
