Deck Analysis: Björn Schulz’ X-Sabers

Björn Schulz just got up from his table, packing up the X-Saber Deck he’s been running all day. He’s been on a 3 – 1 – 1 record, doing well. Turns out however that he had to leave just now; he could only make it to the YCS for today.

While that felt like a pity, I was still able to stop him for 10 more minutes to take down the contents of his Deck. Here’s some additional advisory: DO try this at home, it’s going to be fun!

How did you end up playing X-Sabers this weekend, Björn?
I figured there are plenty of face-down Spells and Traps floating around in the format and after thinking about ways to punish my opponents for playing so many of them, I came up with [trap stun] and [hyunlei]. Roughly one and a half years ago, I had also been playing X-Saber, so I thought why not give it another go?! I also considered playing a Gogogo Deck, but I was missing too many cards for my Extra Deck.
Your day has abruptly ended, but are you still satisfied with your performance today?
Yes, very much so!
How come you have to leave in the middle of the day?
We wanted to throw a party at my place this evening and my roommate missed his ride home. So now it’s up to me to get us home in time and make sure our guests won’t stay in front of closed doors, which is why I dropped from the event despite my good result. Then again, I couldn’t have attended tomorrow anyway, so I don’t feel too downbeat about it.
Were you happy with the way your Deck performed?
I felt like the match-ups were pretty good overall, with the exception of Mermails. [naturia beast] is also a real “beast” against certain archetypes like Spellbooks; I basically won a game in 2 turns because of it.
What changes would you apply to your Deck now that you’ve seen it in action again?
I would definitely remove [pashuul] because it didn’t put in enough work. It was often met with some sort of removal. I don’t even know what to add to make up for it, but other than that, I think that the Deck in its current iteration is well-positioned to score some decent results.
What are your plans now for the next few events?
In some of the upcoming events, I would probably try to play the Gogogo Deck if I can get my hands on the cards that I’m missing for my Extra Deck.

Otherwise, I would continue playing this Deck since it’s lots of fun until the new Hieratic cards will be available here; I might then switch over to that Deck.
Alright, thank you for taking the time to sit down with us Björn!
