Deck Analysis: Dustin Sembach’s Bujin Deck

After once again scouting the top tables, I came across Dustin Sembach’s unique strategy. He is running the “Bujin”-monsters this weekend and so far, the Deck is serving him well. I decided to take a closer look at the Deck so I could introduce it to a wider audience.

Dustin, how did you end up playing the Bujin archetype this weekend?
I have always enjoyed playing Decks that try to foil the plans of the popular Decks. I really liked the “Bujin”-monsters ever since they first came out in Judgment of the Light and when they received even more support in Shadow Specters, I felt like they were up on par.
[nbsp]
Did you expect the Deck to perform this well prior to the tournament?
Truth be told, I was expecting something like a 5 – 3 record. Then again, I made sure that my Deck was packed with a bag of tricks against both the Dragon Rulers as well as the Evilswarm monsters and I’ve been paired against a lot this weekend.

I also had to go up against 1 Constellar, 1 Fire Fist and 1 Traptrix Deck, even though the match against the Constellar and Fire Fist players were really close. I was a bit lucky there, I have to admit.
[nbsp]
Please explain the core strategy of the Deck for the readers less familiar with the archetype.
The main card is [bujin yam] since he allows you to search your Deck for a “Bujin”-monster during your End Phase. You then have to discard a card, but that doesn’t hurt too much. My main targets are [bujin mika] and [bujin crane] since you can [ss] the former from your hand when [bujin yam] gets destroyed and you always need a monster on the field and the latter acts like an [honest] for the Bujin archetype.
[nbsp]

Dustin Sembach is well on his way to taking down a YCS with the Bujin Monsters!

OK, so you always got a monster on the field. What then?
You also run [bujin turtle] which can protect your monsters from targeting effects. You have to banish her from the Graveyard to do so and a lot of opponents aren’t expecting to see that coming. So you always want to discard her for the effect of [bujin yam] and then hope that your opponent doesn’t know what your Deck is doing.

[bujin quil] is yet another important card; you can destroy a face-up card on the field by banishing it in the Graveyard. So basically, you’re not losing anything when you’re discarding the right cards for [bujin yam]; you can often get additional value out of the cards you sent to the [grave].
[nbsp]
You mentioned that opponents don’t seem to be prepared for this Deck?
Yes, exactly. So far, only 1 opponent sided into the right cards this weekend as far as I could tell.

Another card that is giving my opponents headaches is [kaiser col]; it’s not that hard to keep a monster on the field in this Deck and I don’t need more, so the Dragon Ruler players have a very hard time trying to unleash their best combos. They tend to need 2 or even more monsters so their Decks can do what they’re supposed to.
[nbsp]
What are the other anti effects in your Deck?
I also Main Deck [empty], [maxx], [lance] and [mf]. So it’s not all that unusual, but there are more cards that can interrupt opposing strategies in my Side Deck.

Against Dragon Rulers, I often add [gozen], [pachy] and [debunk] to my Main Deck. So that adds up to around 15 cards that are working really well against Dragon Rulers in the Deck after the first game, which often translates to easier wins in game 2 and a possible game 3.
[nbsp]

Unlike most other Decks, Dustin doesn't need to Xyz Summon like crazy; all he needs is 1 monster!

Now that you’ve come so far, what’s your new goal for the weekend?
I definitely want to advance to the Top 8 and I certainly wouldn’t mind taking the whole event down. That would feel like a dream come true.

It looks like there are still a lot of Dragon Rulers on the top tables, so I do think that the odds are working in my favor, so let’s see how this goes.
[nbsp]
We’ll definitely keep our fingers crossed for you, Dustin, so best of luck in the remaining rounds today!
