Deck Analysis: Wytze Kluitenberg’s Battlin’ Boxers
It’s been a while since we last caught up with Wytze Kluitenberg; you might remember him from his epic victory at one of the coolest “Win a Trip” events that have ever been held. He won free travel and accomodation for the 100th YCS, YCS Long Beach, where he was doing rather well, advancing to the Top 32 in the largest Yu-Gi-Oh! Event of all time.
Back then when Wytze won the Trial, he was running Gravekeepers. So he’s somewhat used to the more exotic Decks. Today, he’s following suit, showing up with a Battlin’ Boxer Deck. Head inside the article to learn more…
3 [bb glassjaw]
3 [bb sparrer]
3 [bb switch]
3 [bb head]
2 [masked cham]
1 [soul drain]
1 [crimson blader]
1 [scrap d]
3 [bb yoke]
Wytze, how did you end up with Battlin’ Boxers this weekend?
Wytze: I don’t want to admit it, but Michael Ciplak recommended the Deck to me. Unfortunately, he couldn’t make it; he would have played it too. So well, now I’m trying to make a strong showing with the Deck instead.
What is the Deck all about?
That’s a good question, actually. The main reason I’m running this Deck is because you can main deck 3 [iiw] and 2 [mistake]. They are very useful against some of the most powerful Decks in the field, so they should give me an edge.
Also, [bb yoke] isn’t a joke!
No, in all seriousness, this card is really, really good.
So your strategy is to [ss] [bb yoke] as fast as possible?
No, I prefer to [ss] [lchain] or [kotfi] first so I can then set up my follow-up plays. Also, they often meet some removal from my opponent, so they have less outs for [bb yoke].
[masked cham] helps you to make [crimson blader] really fast which is amazing against Dragons. Also, [sdd] and [iiw] make a strong combo since there’s next to no way to get rid of [sdd] as long as the Trap Card is active.
Is your Deck just all about the combos?
More or less so. That’s why you also want to run [upstart] to make sure you’ll draw into the key cards fast. You can’t run [pod] since you want to [ss] every turn.
Why do you run [mst] in the Side Deck? Are there any other interesting Side Deck techs?
People tend to side in [sd] and it’s really good against this Deck. You then need an answer for it. I’m also somewhat afraid of Firefist players so I max out on copies of [overworked] to fight them.
What are your best match-ups?
I mostly teched against Dragons, but I think I’ll also do rather well against most of the rogue Decks out there. Then again, when you’re faring well against Dragons, you should already be able to cling to the top tables for most of the weekend.
It’s a big advantage for you that people don’t know how to play against the Deck, isn’t it?
Yes, I don’t think anyone has this Deck on the radar this weekend. [bb yoke] is such a strong card; it is really hard to remove from the field and it also combos well with the other Battlin’ Boxers. If you also have a [bb glassjaw], you can save it from destruction, [bb yoke] gets an additional 800 ATK AND you can add a card to your hand – it doesn’t get much better than that!
We already invited Wytze over for our Round 1 Feature Match and we’ll keep an eye on him this weekend. It would definitely be something to see the Battlin’ Boxers tearing up the top tables of this event, don’t you think?
