Deck Profile: Giovanni Capecci’s Photon Drain

[p]If I asked a hundred players which new Decks were introduced with [orcs], 90 of them would tell me something about Wind-Ups and Inzektors. Giovanni Capecci, on the other hand, got all excited about the Photon Monsters, ever since he first laid eyes on them during the Sneak Peek. While he had a promising start, he ended up on a 3 – 1 – 2 record before calling it a day. Still, you should check it out to get some new ideas!

[p]Please tell us how you came up with the Deck idea?
[/p][p]
Giovanni: “Basically, I became aware of the archetype at the Sneak Peek. I really liked [pho trasher], [pho breaker], [pho lizard] and [pho trident] and once I put the pieces together, it all shouted “[drain] Anti!”[br]
I put the Deck together the same evening, recorded a video and went to bed. The next morning, it already sported 500 clicks, so it certainly seemed like many people were interested in the archetype.”
[/p][p]
“I started testing the Deck and switched out a few cards. It turned out really competitive as it can catch opponents off guard!”
[/p][p]
Would you say this is your biggest advantage? Other Duelist’s inexperience with the archetype?
[/p][p]
Giovanni: “Well, they know [drain]. However, they have to read all of the Photon cards and they shake their head in disbelief all the time. The first [pho tiger] doesn’t really leave them jaw dropping, but as soon as I follow it up with [pho thrasher] or [pho breaker], they start struggling and have troubles keeping up with all the pressure I apply!”

Which cards win you games?
[/p][p]
Giovanni: “[pho trident]! You can attack into stronger monsters and they expect to see [honest]. Often, they don’t activate a card like [prison] as they don’t mind losing only their Monster. As soon as we enter the Damage Step, I can then use the Quick-Play Spell Card to not only get rid of their Monster, but also of their Set Spells or Traps! This is an easy 2 for 1 and it often gives me the advantage I need to bring the game home!”
[/p][p]
What’s your Side Decking strategy?
[/p][p]
Giovanni: “I can’t really change the strategy of my Main Deck too much. For a while, I experimented and sided into a [macro] strategy, however, that didn’t work too well with [drain]. I instead opted to rely more on the Continuous Trap and find ways to protect it. This proved to be more successful during testing.”
[/p][p]
If you could apply any changes to your Deck now that the event is underway, what would they be?
[/p][p]
Giovanni: “I Main Decked [maxx] to improve my match up against Wind-Up, but never got paired against the Deck. So I guess it didn’t really pay out in retrospect.
