Deck Profile: William Chow’s Blackwings

For our first Deck Feature of the day we asked William Chow to our table. He’s a regular YCS Judge and decided to compete in Bochum with an older archetype that has recieved new support in [pgl2]. We asked why he chose to run Blackwings in general and we spoke about card choices. Read on to see what he has to say.

Hi William, tell us why you brought Blackwings to YCS Bochum?
I chose Blackwings, because it’s the deck that I’ve been playing for 5 years now and I felt most comfortable with it going into this tournament. It’s also very versatile, meaning you can play a lot of anti-meta cards without crippling your own strategy. The only weakness I see is that I’m heavily dependent on drawing my own backrow cards.
What are your expectations for this event?
I’m mainly here for the fun with my friends. They brought me back to the game and back into playing instead of Judging. I’m a regular Judge at YCS events, but I want to gain experience as a player again and support my friends as well. To be honest I’m glad if can make it to Day 2.
Do have any Tech cards?
I decided to side three copies of [mistake], because it stops Nekroz dead in its tracks. In my Main Deck I added [asf] in order to slow my opponents down. I chose not to run [black sonic]. The card is not versatile enough. I prefer to run [delta crow]. Taking out backrow seems much more important to me, because Blackwings are able to spam the field and win quickly. Actually I’m really happy about the new support cards that were released in [pgl2]. At first I was skeptic, but they convinced me and proved to be a valuable addition to the archetype. I’m particularly thinking of the Synchro Monsters, like [bw tamer], that made the deck even more aggressive.
Tell us about your Match-Ups?
Qliphort is a particularly good Match-Up for me, even though I didn’t expect too many today. My hardest Match-Up is Nekroz of course, but I think that applies to any deck at the moment. For this reason I’m siding heavily against Nekroz.
Any last words?
I want to say “Hi” to my friends and Belgian countryman. I’m glad we traveled here together. I’m having a great time so far.
