Dragon Duel Final Feature Match: Luca (Dragon Ruler) vs Niels (Spellbook)

This is the younger version of “It all comes down to this!” Germany against Italy – described by a judge as ‘the classic’. Niels and Luca would face off with their Spellbook and Dragon Ruler Decks respectively. Both of these Duelists would be heading to Las Vegas in August – but only one would be going as champion – let’s find out who!

Luca won the dice roll and started off using [burner] to [ss] [blaster] from the Deck. [stream] was next, bringing out a [tidal]. These two became one as he [xyz]ed [sack] and spawned two tokens, tributing both of them for [ladd]! An incredibly strong opening play. He attempted to bring back Tidal but didn’t realise his own LADD would negate it!

Niels drew his sixth card and sighed, considering what he could do in the situation. He activated [sb sec] which LADD negated, dropping to 1800 atk. He activated [spell abs] next, also negated. He set a card and passed.

Luca drew and entered his Battle Phase, as he did so Niels’ [roar] was LADD’s final negate, and 3400 damage followed. It was back to the German Duelist.

He used Secrets to search [sb mag], and [ns]ed it searching out [sb jud] with it’s effect. Judgment was activated and next up was [sb hall]. [sb master] revealed [sb fate] and copied Secrets, fishing [sb power] from the Deck. He activated it on Magician and attacked over LADD, destroying [sack] in the process although Luca got to [ss] Tidal from the grave. Niels used the second effect of Power to add a second Fate to his hand. It was activated in [mp2] banishing Tidal, allowing Luca to search his Deck for the younger version, Stream. Star Hall now had three counters and after setting his last card Niels searched four Spellbooks to his hand and [ss]ed [jowgen] in his [ep].

Luca set two [st]s and passed.

Niels played [sb eternity] to regain Judgment and activated it, using Secrets to search another Magician and in turn a Master. It was played, copying Secrets and getting another Star Hall which was activated. [sb tower] came next and both Magicians were on 1500 – they hit for 3000 and after setting a card he searched another four Spellbook cards in his [ep].

In Luca’s turn, the Italian flipped [sd] with the intention of negating Jowgen, but [sb wisdom] kept the Spellcaster’s effect live – for this turn at least! A flipped [sarco] banished [redox] and searched a [reactan]. Luca checked through his opponent’s graveyard and thought hard, looking at a hand full of Dragons! He set a monster and Niels banished three Spells in the [ep] to remove Skill Drain from the equation!

He Summoned Kycoo and used Power to boost it. Judgment was next and a 2300 Magician attacked over Stream, allowing a hugely booster Kycoo and second Magician to attack for the game!

Both young competitors seemed to know exactly what they were Side Decking against this matchup, leading you to believe Dragon Ruler vs Spellbook has been just as popular as anticipated this weekend!

Luca started game two. He [ss]ed Blaster from hand by banishing Tidal and Redox, searching a Stream and second Redox. He used the Stream’s effect to discard the Redox and [ss] a Tidal from the deck. He [xyz]ed [11] and set two backrow. Can you guess what one of them is?

…that’s right, [eev]! He waited for Niels to play Judgment before activating it, costing the German his Secrets and Fate in hand. He set a backrow and passed, unable to make any Spell plays!

The Italian used Blaster from the graveyard, banishing Redox and Stream, searching his third and final copy of the level seven Earth Dragon Ruler. Tidal was next, banishing Redox and Reactan from the hand. [roar] stopped the Monsters from attacking but [sack] hit the field in [mp2]. [veiler] stopped the tokens and Luca passed.

Niels drew [sb mag]! This could be his way out – he [ns]ed it and Luca thought about his options before allowing the effect to go through. He had a set Skill Drain – was he saving it for a better time? Secrets came from the Deck and was played, banishing three from the graveyard before Dracossack met it’s end. After 500 damage the Italian drew.

Blaster returned, banishing Tidal in the process and searching another. Blaster sent the small Water Magician packing and dealt 2300 in the process.

Niels’ topdecked Master was no use under Virus, and he set his last card in hand – previously revealed as a second [veiler].

Luca set his [vortex] and played [card d] discarding the Blaster and Tidal. He returned the Blaster and attacked through the Veiler.

Virus was over and Niels’ Spellbook Magician came down off the top. It went through a Secrets to a Fate which was set. [sd] in the [ep] prevented Blaster from returning to hand.

The Italian attempted to attack over Magician next turn but Blaster was banished from Fate, searching Burner. It was used in [mp2] to [ss] another Blaster and play passed back.

[reborn] was Niels’ draw – [ss]ing Magician in defence. He turned the other one to defence and passed.

[vortex] from Luca finished the game as he revived Tempest from the graveyard and attacked with both, leaving the German on 500LP but unable to draw anything of use on his next turn.

Niels began game three with Judgment. Star Hall followed, and Secrets was after that. This was going to be a nice setup! Secrets searched Master and Neils Summoned Jowgen, playing Master and copying Secrets for Fate. He also revealed Wisdom in his hand. Two ‘mystery’ cards were set and in the [ep] three Spellbooks were added to his hand.

The Italian set two cards – Eradicator and [break] before playing Card Destruction! He dropped some Dragons which were of no current use to him and drew three more cards before passing.

Niels activated Master revealing Power to copy Secrets, hunting through his Deck for a Spellbook Magician. It was Summoned and found a Secrets to hand, which was activated getting Tower to hand. That became the Field Spell card of the Duel, bumping Star Hall to five counters. Magician attacked for 1000 and another [st] was added.

Raigeki Break was activated targeting Jowgen, but Wisdom saved it! Reactan was nearly Summoned, but [sw] dealt with it sharpish!

Tower netted the Spellbook player more cards in his Standby Phase and he thought about his play before activating Judgment. Power boosted Magician and it attacked for 2300. The Italian was down to 4700. Secrets was searched in the [ep].

[7ss] banished Redox to draw two cards and search Reactan, which was set.

Fate banished it and Secrets was next, searching Wisdom. Kycoo was Summoned and with a 1000 boost from Star Hall, Jowgen went to attack position! All three Monsters attacked and that was enough to seal the match!
