Duelist Diary Update #1

[p]Round 6 will be underway any minute, but I still tried to get my hands on our Diary Duelists for this weekend to see how they have been faring…

Jarel's showing off the Xyz Monster that's not just shocking him this weekend!

All I had to do was walk up to Jarel to get him to talk excitedly about what he has been experiencing the first 5 rounds. You could definitely tell he had a blast:

[b]Jarel:[/b] I love the competition here; it’s really difficult! The players over here tend to play more conservatively; they think longer before they make their moves.
[/p][p]
In round 1, I set [pachy] in game 3, on my second turn. He special summoned one monster after another to the field, so I was hoping to get the most out of the effect. He thought long and hard when he went for [16] and eventually, he decided on “monsters”. That meant my [pachy] couldn’t destroy any of his monsters and I lost the match…
[/p][p]
In the 4th Round, he [soul taker]ed me and went for one of the Wind-Up combos, summoning a million monsters to the field. That meant he could claim that game. The second game, I didn’t draw any monsters while he went for big monsters, most notably [16] (again) and [utopia]. That’s how I lost that round.
[/p][p]
I played against Gravekeepers in Round 5, where he [r trib]ed me for 4 monsters in game 1! I couldn’t do anything after that. Game 2, I came back, but in game 3, he had [ddv] on his very first turn and another [r trib] shortly after killed me in that game as well.
[/p][/quote][nbsp][p]
I asked Jarel if he would continue playing despite his 2 – 3 record and he told me right away “I don’t see myself dropping just yet! I want to continue playing until I lose at least another round.”
[/p][p]
That’s the spirit we like to see and Jarel is not alone. After Round 3 concluded earlier, we still had around 775 players in the tournament, that’s around 95 %. Usually, at these larger events, we are only left with 85 to 90 % of the field after 3 rounds. Seems like Barcelona would be a great place for the Olympic Games.

Eduard is having a blast with his out of the box approach!
Eduard is having a blast with his out of the box approach!

[nbsp][p]
Eduard could improve his previous 1 – 1 record a bit as he’s now on 3 – 2. He only drew into his defensive cards the last round, which meant that he couldn’t apply any pressure to his Wind-Up opponent. The other 2 matches, however, his opponents (playing Dino Rabbit and Wind-Up) weren’t prepared for his Chain Burn deck, so it seemed like he was moving up the ladder briefly.
[/p][p]
He will definitely continue playing at the moment and he wouldn’t even mind if he lost some more games. Like he said before, he’s mostly here to have fun, so dropping out of the tournament is not even remotely on his mind for the time being. In the worst case, it’s still some great training, which will help him do better at the events to come!
[/p][p]
This is an important lesson that you should take to heart. Eduard has already been competing in the Game Boy World Championship, so he definitely knows what it takes to compete at the highest level. Think about it and reconsider dropping the next time you’re falling a little short of your own expectations.

Cloak and Dagger helped Mathijs claim a victory already!
Cloak and Dagger helped Mathijs claim a victory already!

[nbsp][p]
This leaves us with Mathijs, who currently sports the best record out of our 3 featured Duelists. He only lost the first round due to a misplay on his end. After that, he won 4 straight matches, but that might have something to do with the fact that he dodged the Wind-Up match-up so far.
[/p][p]
3 of his opponents played Karakuri decks – a match-up he didn’t prepare for much. He still won all the matches against them as they all failed to Xyz Summon [17] so far! Seems like this card is making a lot of waves this weekend, at least according to our Diary Duelists.
[/p][p]
I asked Mathijs if he intends to further improve his winning streak and this is what he had to say: “I’m feeling pretty confident at the moment and think that I might continue my streak for a few more rounds!”
[/p][nbsp][p]
For the time being, all 3 Diary Duelists remain in competition, however, with more and more Public Events that we’ll offer over the course of the weekend, chances are we’ll see some of them enrolling there. In any case, we’ll continue to keep you posted so you will know how they’ll be doing!
