Duelist Profile: The Brotherhood of the Van Camps

Benoit and Yves van Camp are somewhat famous in the European community, having Judged at many tournaments up to the European Championship level. Today, both are in attendance as players, a rare sight, but a pleasant one nonetheless. I decided to sit down with them to ask them how things were going.

So when did you decide to play at this event?
We decided to attend the event no matter whether we would get picked for the volunteer team or not. So when we heard the news that there would be more Italian judges in the team, we started preparing to play.
What does it feel like to play in a tournament when you’re so used to Judging?
Yves: I wasn’t that prepared, so it’s not going to well. I’m currently sporting a 0 – 3 record.
Benoit: I did some testing in advance, so it’s not that bad for me. My current record is 2 – 1, however, so there’s still much room for improvement.
[nbsp]
Do you think it’s important to play every once in a while even when you’re judging, usually?
Yes, it definitely helps you to not lose the connection to the community. You’ll know what it feels like to play in a tournament, you have an easier time getting familiar with the popular cards and it’s also a lot of fun!
[nbsp]
What Decks are you playing this weekend and why?
Yves: Karakuri – I really like the archetype. I prefer Earth monsters, so that seemed like the right choice. It’s also rather fast, so you can still find the time to chat in between rounds with players from different countries.
Benoit: Laval. Those are the only cards I have.
[nbsp]
What are your plans for the weekend?
Yves: If we don’t make Day 2, we’ll head out and enjoy Turin. We have been here before, but we never found the time to actually check out the city (Oli’s note: I’m well familiar with this problem!).
[nbsp]
So overall, you’re happy that you made the trip?
Yes, definitely! It’s a very rewarding experience since we got to meet a lot of new players and we can cheer from some of our locals from Belgium.
