Round 1 Feature Match: Gehan Amaranayake vs. Mario Spallone

YCS Milan is underway and we picked a great game for our round 1 Feature Match: Gehan [ama] from the UK is facing Mario Spallone from Italy. [ama] relies on a Quickdraw Debris deck featuring [shooting] – let’s see if he can bring one of Yusei’s favorite cards out and win a game with it!

Spallonoe kicked things off and simply Set a monster.

[ama] discarded [spore] to Special Summon [quickdraw]. He Tributed it to Summon [caius] and removed [hamster]. He Set a Spell or Trap Card and was done with his turn.

[hole] got cleared the field, [trooper] came out next and its effect was used. It attacked directly for 1900 and [ama] was fine with that, leaving him with 6100 Life Points (Spallone had 5600 left).

Play was back to [ama] and he drew for his turn. He checked both Graveyards, Set a spell or trap and passed.

Another 3 cards went to the Graveyard for [trooper]'[s] effect. He Tributed it for [scrap golem] and used the effect to bring back [scrap beast]. Next, he attacked with the Beast, dealing 1600 damage. The Golem was sent in next, but [ama] activated [bom] to turn it face-down. [scrap storm] was Chained to send another [scrap beast] to Spallone’s Graveyard. He drew a card and down went the Golem. He Set 2 Spell or Trap Cards and wanted to end, but [ama] flipped [decree] before entering his turn.

Things weren’t looking too great for [ama]. He might have shut down Spallone’s defenses with [decree], but he had to step on the gas. He did so with [lonefire], brought out a second copy, Tributed that as well and ended up with [tytannial]. He declared an attack on [scrap beast], but Spallone had another [scrap storm]!

[scrap chimera] was sent to Spallone’s Graveyard. He drew a card before [ama] was allowed to attack again (a replay was triggered as the number of monsters on Spallone’s side of the field changed after the attack declaration) and dealt 2800 damage.

Now it was on Spallone who seemed to be sitting in a tough spot. He Special Summoned [cd], Normal Summoned [monk], Set a spell or trap and ended.

[ama] had [trunade] to clear Spallone’s back row. [debris] came out next and brought back [lonefire]. Both were Tuned to [brd]. [ama] didn’t use its first effect, but made use of the second to turn [monk] to attack position! He attacked over it with [tytannial] and [brd] was sent into [cd]. Together, they dealt enough damage for [ama] to win the first game!

Spallone simply Set a monster again. Gehan Set a Spell or Trap Card and ended.

It was Spallone’s turn again and he flipped [ryko], sending [bulb], [scrap chimera] and [sj] to his Graveyard. He had [scrap beast] and Tuned it together with [ryko] to [goyo]. He attacked directly for 2800 and ended his turn.

[ama] Set a card to each zone and play was back to Spallone.

He Summoned [scrap chimera], but [ama] discarded [veiler] to strip the Beast of its effect. [goyo] attacked into [ryko] and [ama] opted to destroy [scrap chimera]. Spallone tried to Chain [scrap storm], but as [ryko]'[s] effect triggers during the Damage Step, it’s not possible to use the Quick-Play Spell Card. It was returned to Spallone’s hand and [scrap chimera] was destroyed. [ryko] was Special Summoned to Spallone’s side of the field. [bulb] came back during Main Phase 2 and all monsters were Tuned to [wurm], wiping [ama]’s field!

Play was back to [ama] and he Set 2 Spell or Trap Cards together with a monster. He passed.

Another [scrap chimera] came down for Spallone which brought back [scrap beast]. He Tuned both to [scrap dragon], Set a card, but [ama] had [mst] to destroy [scrap storm] right away. Spallone attacked with [wurm], destroying [veiler]. An attack with [scrap dragon] followed, dealing 2800 damage. During the End Phase, [decree] was flipped and it was [ama]’s turn again.

He tried to start his comeback with [poa], but [crow] was all Spallone needed to win the game as [ama] shuffled up his cards (the effect of [poa] is negated if not all of the 5 monsters are shuffled back to the deck).

Both players shook hands before the final Duel that would decide the winner of the match. [ama] Set a card to each zone and passed.

Spallone Summoned [trooper] and lost [hole], [mst] and [ryko]. [ama] was extremely pleased, seeing so many strong cards in his opponent’s Graveyard so early in the game! [trooper] attacked into [sangan] which got [ama] [dandy]. The Italian Set a spell or trap, but [ama] flipped [decree]!

[ama] discarded [dandy] to Special Summon [qd]. [bom] was immediately used on the Tuner. However, [ama] wasn’t done just yet; he Normal Summoned [debris] and brought back [dandy]. He Tuned one of the Tokens, [dandy] and [debris] to [stardust]. He attacked over [trooper] and passed.

So far, things were going great for [ama]. He had a full field and [hole] was already gone, so he didn’t have to fear overextending. Spallone used [foolish] on [scrap goblin], he Summoned [scrap chimera] to bring it back, next up was [reborn] and [ama] suggested his [sangan]. Spallone did check his opponent’s Graveyard, but he decided against [sangan]. He brought back his own [trooper] and used its effect. Then he Tuned both of his scrap monsters to [scrap archfiend]. It was sent into [stardust], [trooper] took down [quickdraw] and after setting a spell or trap, Spallone was done with his turn. What a comeback!

[ama] had [poa] and this time it resolved. He drew into 2 fresh cards so he was up on 5 again. He Tributed 2 Tokens for [ladd]! The big Dragon took down [scrap archfiend] and [ama] was happy to pass. With [decree] AND [ladd] on the field, it wouldn’t be easy for his opponent to overcome [ama]’s defenses. [cold wave] was activated, but [ladd] negated it. [trooper]'[s] effect was activated next, sending [bom], [bulb] and [crow] to the Graveyard; the Book would have been helpful in this situation. The [trooper] didn’t gain any ATK as [ladd]'[s] effect negated that as well. Then [scrap beast] came out and both monsters were Tuned to [brd]. It attacked over [ladd] and [ama] lost his field (the effect of [ladd]). That left [ama] with 7200 Life Points. In his Main Phase 2, Spallone used [bulb]'[s] effect to return it to the field and he then Tuned both monsters to [stardust].

[ama] simply Set a monster and passed.

[stardust] attacked over [bulb] and Spallone Set another monster. Play was back to [ama] again.

With 4 cards in his hand, [ama] had a couple of options. He checked his Graveyard before bringing out [lonefire]. He got a second copy from his deck, sent that to the Grave as well and this got him [tytannial]. The huge Plant attacked over [stardust] and [ama] was done with his turn.

[hamster] was flipped and got Spallone [ryko]. Next, [scrapyard] got him [scrap goblin]. Spallone had to think about his next move for a moment, but he eventually opted to simply pass.

[ama] drew [reborn]! He used it to bring back [stardust] from Spallone’s Graveyard. He Normal Summoned [crow], followed it up by using the effect of [bulb] to bring it back to the field and then Tuned both Level 1 Monsters to [fsynch]. He Tuned those to [shooting] and announced the card name loudly. Spallone didn’t seem to be too impressed. [poa] allowed [ama] to draw 2 more cards and shuffle back some of his strongest monsters. The effect of [shooting] was used (the first), revealing [dandy] and [spore] among some other cards, so it could attack twice. The Dragon was sent into [hamster], dealing 2200 damage. [tytannial] attacked into [ryko], but Spallone didn’t want to use the destruction effect.

In the following turn, Spallone simply Set a monster and passed. [ama] revealed [caius] and Spallone extended his hand!
