Feature Match Round 11: Miriam Weber vs. Wenjamin Yusim
Sitting at the Feature Match table in the last round of the swiss portion of of the YCS were Miriam Weber from Bern, Switzerland, facing Wenjamin Yusim from Nuremberg, Germany. Weber relied on the Machina deck and Yusim put his money on Frog Monarchs. This is gonna get interesting in just a second!
Yusim showed no manners as he wouldn’t let the lady go first. He Summoned [swap], sending [treeborn] from his deck to his Graveyard. He returned [swap] to his hand with its own effect and passed.
[frame] came out first on Weber’s side of the field, letting her search her deck for [fortress]. [frame] attacked directly for 1800 damage, she Set 3 face-down spells or traps and passed.
Yusim started his turn by Special Summoning [treeborn] back to the field with its own effect. He offered the Frog as a Tribute to Summon [mobius]. He used the Monarch’s effect to destroy [shrink], which was Chained, and [mbaas]. Yusim simply passed as his Monarch wasn’t strong enough to destroy [frame] (effect of [shrink]).
Play was back to Weber and she went on the offense. She discarded 2 copies of [fortress] to Special Summon one of them back to the field, Summoned [cyber phoenix] and proceded with her Battle Phase. [fortress] ran over the Monarch and the other monsters attacked directly. [frame] was used in Main Phase 2 to equip [fortress].
Yusim activated [cold wave]. He Special Summoned [cd] and brought out [cfd] (he used all of Weber’s monsters for the Special Summon). He attacked directly and passed.
Weber simply passed without any actions; Yusim’s last turn had a devastating effect on her.
Yusim brought back [treeborn]. He offered it as a Tribute and Summoned [thestalos]. Weber Chained [tt] to clear the field, but she still lost [hole] to the effect of the Monarch! Yusim was done with his turn.
Weber simply drew into her 2nd card before passing.
Yusim brought back [treeborn] once more. He Summoned [swap], sending [ronin] from his Deck to his Graveyard, attacked directly and returned the Frog to his hand in Main Phase 2.
Weber was either not afraid of the cards Yusim’s hand was featuring or she simply didn’t draw into what she needed, so she passed again.
Yusim Special Summoned [swap], ditching a second copy [treeborn]. He used the effect to send another copy of [swap] to his Graveyard, then used the effect of [ronin] to Special Summon it back to the field as well and then he offered both [ronin] and [swap] as a Tribute to Summon [ladd]! He attacked directly and play was back to Weber.
She drew into her fourth card, but saw no chance to turn this game around and shuffled up her cards.
Wenjamin Yusim takes an early lead!
One [cfd] was enough for Yusim to foil Weber’s plans and overcome her army of Machine-Type monsters. Let’s see what the side decks can add to this match and if they can make the difference.
Weber Summoned [green], probably a better opening compared to the first Duel. She Set 3 spells or traps and passed.
Yusim Set a Monster and 2 Spell or Trap Cards and wanted to pass, but he lost [dust] to [mst] in his End Phase.
Weber brought out [red], but Yusim revealed the second spell or trap he had Set the turn before: [tt]. He cleared the field (his face-down monster being [treeborn]), but Weber wasn’t too impressed. She Special Summoned [fortress], activated [solidarity], attacked directly and play was back to Yusim.
He read over the effect of [fortress], then he used [soul ex] to offer it as a Tribute to Summon [caius]. The Monarch’s effect removed [solidarity] from the field. He couldn’t attack because of the restriction of [soul ex].
Weber simply Summoned [yellow] and passed.
Yusim attacked with [caius], but Weber had [prison] to stop the attack. In Main Phase 2, Yusim activated [reborn], returning [fortress] from Weber’s Graveyard to his side of the field.
Weber had [yellow], sent it into [caius] and activated [shrink] during the Damage Step! The effect of [fortress] destroyed [treeborn] and [green] dealt 1300 damage with a direct attack.
Yusim simply Set a card to each zone.
Weber had a third Gadget and proceeded with her Battle Phase. She lost [green] to [prison], but could still deal some more damage.
Yusim passed without actions.
Weber wanted to end this Duel here and now, but Yusim had [fader] that bought him another turn.
In the following turn, he returned [treeborn] back to his side of the field and passed.
Weber rammed [yellow] into [treeborn], but an attack of [red] resulted in another [fader]! Yusim would survive for yet another turn!
He used [soul ex] on [red] to Summon [thestalos] before passing.
[bom] turned [thestalos] face-down, so [yellow] could deal with it. Weber Set a fifth Spell or Trap Card and passed.
Yusim passed without actions.
Weber activated [zombie world]! She attacked into [treeborn] and passed.
Yusim simply Set a monster.
Weber now had another copy of [solidarity], helping her [green] to destroy the Set [dck] in battle.
Yusim used [mst] to get rid of [zombie world]. He Summoned [caius] by offering [treeborn] as a Tribute and targeted the monster, but Weber had [tt] to clear the field. In her following turn, a monster was all she needed to dish out the final points of damage and win this Duel!
Weber equals the score!
Both players were playing rather fast in the last Duel and it was hard to keep the pace (despite stopping them here and there). Either they were nervous or they didn’t realize how fast they were playing…
Yusim opted to go first again and he did so by simply Setting a Spell or Trap Card.
Weber kicked things off with [yellow]; she followed it up by discarding 2 copies of [fortress], allowing her to Special Summon one of them back to the field; her gears were already put in motion and the engine was running on full speed!
[bth] was Yusim’s response to [fortress]. Weber Set 2 Spell or Trap Cards and passed.
Yusim Special Summoned [cd], but Weber had a [bth] of her own to deal with it.
Play was back to Weber. She brought out [green] and declared an attack, but Yusim had another [fader]. She Set one spell or trap.
Yusim Set a monster and passed.
Weber Summoned [red], we had a full traffic light on the field, but it didn’t look like it was showing “red” – she was in fifth gear! She attacked with [red] into [sangan], which got Yusim another copy of [fader]. [yellow] attacked into the [fader] that was face-up on the field, destroying it and [green] attacked directly for 1300 points of damage. [zombie world] came out in Main Phase 2!
Yusim Set a card to each zone.
Weber attacked successfully and destroyed [treeborn], but her second attack was stopped by [fader].
Yusim used [dust] in his Draw Phase to destroy [zombie world]. He brought back [treeborn] in his Standby Phase, offered it as a Tribute for [enemy] (still in the Standby Phase) to gain control of [green], Special Summoned [treeborn] again and it seemed like he was starting to turn things around! [green] attacked over [red] and [thestalos] was Tribute Summoned (by sending [green] to the Graveyard) in Main Phase 2, again resulting in Weber losing [hole]!
[yellow] came out on Weber’s side fo the field and got her a copy of [green]. She asked if Yusim’s Graveyard featured another Frog – which Yusim denied – and then she declared attacks with both copies of [yellow] on [fader] and [treeborn].
[mst] in the End Phase destroyed Weber’s face-down [prison]. [treeborn] was returned to the field and Yusim proceeded with his Battle Phase, however, an attack of [thestalos] ended in another [prison]. He Summoned [rai oh] in Main Phase 2 and passed.
Weber activated [solidarity]! She destroyed both of Yusim’s monster in battle once more and Set a Spell or Trap Card before passing.
Yusim brought back [treeborn], but Weber was quick to flip [mor] as a response! So much hate in her Side Deck?! Yusim was out of options and passed.
Weber Summoned [green], proceeded with her Battle Phase and after [yellow] destroyed [treeborn] in battle and the attack of [green] wasn’t stopped by [fader], she revealed [limiter] from her hand that would be enough for her to claim the win!!!
Miriam Weber turns the match upside down and wins 2 – 1!
Yusim quickly remarked that [solidarity] was the card that bugged him the most, not [mor] or [zombie world].
I asked Weber what she thought that was key to her win. She told me that she saved [solidarity] and didn’t play it outright. She held it back and brought it out when it could make the difference and like Yusim confirmed, it just did that!
But let’s not forget about her side deck, featuring both [zombie world] AND [mor], a lot of hate against the Monarchs that love to perform Tribute Summon after Tribute Summon! A strong Side Deck can help you turn the tide as Miriam Weber just showed.Back to all news
