Round 6 Feature Match: Deniz Mailänder vs. Diego Clemente

Deniz Mailänder is only 13 years young, but he’s sitting on an impressive 4 – 1 record. He has to face Diego Clemente in the 6th round of the tournament; a player from Naples running his very own version of Synchro Plant, featuring [sorcerer]. Mailänder is piloting Blackwings through the field, a Deck that has quite a number of versatile cards, but didn’t win any of the bigger tournaments lately.

Clemente rolled a 2, but Mailänder’s 3 allowed him to go first.

He Summoned [bora], Set 2 Spell or Trap Cards to his back row and passed.

Clemente opened with [foolish], sending [dandy] to his Graveyard. This got him 2 Fluff Tokens. He followed it up with [lonefire] and Tributed one of the Tokens to get another copy of [lonefire] out of his Deck. He Tributed the other Token, netting him [spore]. All of his monsters were Tuned to [brd], but Mailänder flipped [warning]! A very early use of the powerful Counter Trap Card, but it seemed like a good decision. Clemente Set a spell or trap and ended.

[bora] attacked successfully, dealing 1700 points of damage. Mailänder Set a spell or trap and play was back to Clemente. He activated [mst] during the End Phase and entered his turn.

First, [debris] came out and brought back [dandy]. [reborn] followed, bringing back [lonefire]. [dandy] was Tributed to bring out [bulb]. 2 more Tokens entered the field with it. One of them was Tuned together with [bulb] for [fsynch]. Clemente drew a card. He then Tuned his other Monsters to [stardust], activated [poa] and shuffled most of the tricky monsters (along with [brd]) back to his Deck. He still wasn’t done, though. He had [charge], netting him [ryko] and sending [dandy] to his Graveyard!

[stardust] and [fsynch] were Tuned to [shooting]. Clemente used the first effect and revealed 1 Tuner. He then used [bulb]'[s] effect and Tuned it with one of the Tokens to another copy of [fsynch]. [spore] returned to the field after [dandy] was removed and it was Tuned with the last Token to [catastor]. [sorcerer] also came out and it removed [bora]. Then, [sorcerer] and [fsynch] were Tuned to [scrap dragon]. Mailänder shuffled up his cards!

Diego Clemente performs a number of Synchro Summons to win the first Duel!

[nbsp]

Wow, the last time I’ve seen so many Synchro Summons in one turn was more than a year ago. It was hard to keep track to all the Special Summons with [fsynch], [spore] and [bulb] giving Clemente plenty of options to perform one Synchro Summon after another. Let’s see if Mailänder can stop him in his tracks in the second Duel.

Mailänder opted to go first again and he had [bw] together with [shura]. This allowed him to search his Deck for [bora]. He passed without any other actions.

Clemente simply Set a monster and passed.

[noc] removed [ryko], [bora] was Summoned next and Mailänder grabbed his Deck again. He got another Blackwing and play proceeded with his Battle Phase; [bora] dealt 1700 points of damage and [shura] another 1800. [gorz] came down for Clemente and Special Summoned a 1800 / 1800 Token. Mailänder activated [hole] to wipe the field and passed.

Clemente Summoned [tomato], attacked directly, Set a spell or trap and ended.

[sirocco] was Summoned, but [dust] was Chained to [bw]'[s] effect to make sure Mailänder wouldn’t draw another card. [gale] and 2 copies of [bora] came down. [gale] and [sirocco] were Tuned to [ded] and its effect was activated. Clemente discarded [veiler] to basically negate the effect. A judge was called to check if [ded] would still lose 500 ATK and DEF and it was ruled that this was part of the effect and not a cost. [reborn] was next and brought back [sirocco]. Its effect was used so it would gain lots and lots of ATK and it stomped over [tomato]. [plague] came out for the effect of [tomato] and play was back to Clemente.

He Summoned [dandy] and Tuned it with [plague] to [catastor]. [plague] came back and it was Tuned with [catastor] to [brd]. The Dragon wiped the field and Clemente activated [poa]. He returned [gorz], [veiler], [tomato] and 2 Synchros to his respective Extra and Main Deck and drew 2 cards. He passed without any other actions, holding onto 2 monsters.

Mailänder simply passed.

[trooper] was Summoned and 3 cards were sent to the Graveyard. It attacked directly, Clemente Set a spell or trap and passed.

Mailänder Set 2 spells or traps.

Clemente activated the effect of [trooper] again. He followed it up with [foolish], netting him [bulb]. [sangan] was Summoned, but [chain] removed it from game. [trooper] attacked directly and Clemente was done with his turn. Mailänder was left with 2800 Life Points.

He drew into [rai oh] and immediately Summoned it. Clemente flipped [tt], but Mailänder Chained [sj] to force through the final amount of damage and turn the Duel around!

[nbsp]

Deniz Mailänder used [rai oh] to equal the score!

[nbsp]

What an exciting match! We wasted no time and play proceeded with the last Duel!

Clemente kicked things off with [lonefire], he Tributed it for a second copy, which was also sacked to net him [tomato] from his Deck. He Set a spell or trap and passed.

Mailänder Summoned [sirocco] and that gave Clemente something to think about. He ultimately decided that it was fine, Mailänder attacked over [tomato] and Clemente searched his Deck for [sangan]. After Setting a Spell or Trap Card, play was back to Clemente.

The Italian flipped [break] during the End Phase to destroy [bom], ditching [bulb]. He Summoned [plague] and together with [sangan], he Tuned his monsters to [catastor]. [sangan] allowed him to search his deck for [consec], a card that can shut down a lot of Mailänder’s tricks. [bulb] returned to the field and [poa] was used. Only [plague] remained in the Graveyard, Clemente drew 2 cards and he then Tuned his monsters once more, bringing out [goyo]. He attacked into [sirocco], but a [kalut] was a very strong answer from Mailänder, taking down the Synchro Monster and leaving [sirocco] unscratched on the field! 2 Spell or Trap Cards were Set and Mailänder was on again!

[sirocco] attacked, but [call] stopped the attack, returning [goyo] once more. Mailänder attacked regardless, discarded another copy of [kalut] during the Damage Step and the Synchro Monster was destroyed once more. He passed play.

Clemente checked his Graveyard, Set a spell or trap, Summoned [consec] and was done with his turn.

Mailänder checked his opponent’s Graveyard as well, he activated [reborn] and this got him [goyo]. He switched [sirocco] to Defense Position, sent [goyo] into [consec] and the attack concluded, dealing 2800 points of damage. Mailänder didn’t feel like Special Summoning [consec], he brought out [gale], Tuned both of his monsters to [stardust], he Set a spell or trap and passed. During the End Phase, [goatz] got Clemente 4 Tokens before he entered his turn.

He checked his Graveyard before Summoning [lonefire]. He Tributed it for its own effect, which got him a second copy, he discarded that, too and got [spore] as a result. Together with one of the Tokens, he Synchro Summoned [fsynch], he drew a card and followed it up by bringing back [spore], removing [dandy]. 2 of the Tokens and [spore] were Tuned to [brionac], its effect was used, discarding [dandy], and [stardust] was returned to the Extra Deck. [dust] destroyed the Set [noc] and then [sorcerer] was supposed to enter the field. That wasn’t possible as Clemente had no open Monster Card Zones, but he simply Tuned 2 of the Tokens with [fsynch] to [arm] and then Special Summoned the [sorcerer]. He used the effect to get rid of [goyo], brought back [plague], Synchro Summoned [stardust] and he had another field full of white monsters!

Dejá-vù? Another avalanche of Synchro Monsters!

[nbsp]

Clemente attacked with his monsters, starting with the weakest, which left Mailänder with only a few Life Points. He equipped [arm] to [stardust] and passed play one last time.

Mailänder drew for his turn and thought about possible solutions. He couldn’t come up with any, Clemente’s field was simply too impressive, so all he could do was extend his hand.

[nbsp]

Diego Clemente wins thanks to his army of Synchro Monsters!

[nbsp]

I asked Clemente about his most important card in the final Duel, but he couldn’t quite decide. It was more the interaction of all his Tuners with the various Synchro Monsters, most notably [fsynch], allowing him to claim the win!

This Duel really showed us the strength of [fsynch]. It helps you set up even bigger combos by drawing you fresh cards and giving you the option to Special Summon even more Synchro Monsters to your field!
