Feature Match Top 4: Michel Grüner vs Stefan Faust

To progress from a field of almost 1300 Duelists yesterday morning to the final 2, that’s what both of these competitors are hoping to achieve today. Michel Grüner was featured in Round 2 yesterday, so we already know he’s running X-Sabers. Stefan Faust hasn’t received a match feature until now, and he has taken Blackwings to the Top 4. These 2 Decks were the most popular among the Top 32 competitors here today, but only 1 of them will be able to go all the way.

Could Michel Grüner go all the way with X-Sabers?

Faust won the roll and started the Match with 2 Set Spells and Traps, and then a Set Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow.

Grüner Normal Summoned XX-Saber Boggart Knight, declining to use its effect. Boggart Knight attacked and destroyed Kalut in battle (Grüner must have figured that Faust had Icarus Attack Set). He Set 2 cards to his back row before losing one of them (Solemn Warning) to Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.

Faust Summoned Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn and declared an attack, only to be halted by Book of Moon.

Grüner attacked with Boggart Knight, destroying Sirocco, and then Set 2 Spells and Traps, still playing around that Icarus Attack.

Faust drew Torrential Tribute and considered his options (the Duelists chatted in German while this was happening). Eventually he activated Dark Hole to destroy Boggart Knight and Normal Summoned Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North. Blizzard’s effect got Faust his Kalut from the Graveyard which was Tributed for that Icarus Attack, but Grüner negated it with Trap Stun. Blizzard attacked directly and Faust set Torrential in Main Phase 2.

Grüner Set a monster and passed.

Faust was holding Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame and drew Gorz the Emissary of Darkness. He Summoned Shura, tried to attack Grüner monster but was stopped by Enemy Controller, switching Shura to Defence Position (Grüner considered using Controller’s other effect instead but opted not to). Blizzard ran over the Set Sangan and Grüner added XX-Saber Fulhelmknight to his hand with its effect. Faust Synchro Summoned Goyo Guardian in Main Phase 2, completing his turn.

Enemy Controller prevents Faust from getting a free monster.

Grüner Normal Summoned Fulhelmknight, took Goyo with Mind Control, and Synchro Summoned XX-Saber Gottoms! He attacked directly with his new 3100 ATK monster and made no further plays.

Faust drew Dust Tornado and Set it to go with his Torrential Tribute.

Grüner, attacked directly with Gottoms again, dealing another 3100 points of damage.

Faust drew Monster Reborn and checked his Graveyard (“Du hast Reborn?” was Grüner’s reply, making the correct read) before Summoning Grüner’s XX-Saber Fulhelmknight.

A call of “Yu-Gi-Ohhhhhhh!” came from Grüner before he drew, hoping to get a card that would seal the Duel. He didn’t seem to get it though, as he methodically considered his options. XX-Saber Gottoms declared an attack, and Fulhelmknight’s effect negated it. Grüner ended his turn.

Faust drew Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor, Summoned it, and activated Torrential Tribute to clear the field. He then used Vayu’s effect, removing it and Sirocco from the Graveyard to Special Summon Blackwing Armed Wing, attacking for 2300.

Grüner played Dark Hole, then Monster Reborn, and Faust conceded, knowing it was over.

Dark Hole and Monster Reborn, a once Forbidden combo!

Michel Grüner takes the lead!

Stefan Faust considers his Side-Decking options.

Faust sided 4 cards, 2 Gottoms’ Emergency Call, Delta Crow – Anti Reverse and Effect Veiler, taking out Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn, Shura, Bora and Dust Tornado. Grüner was stuck on his final card choice so he rolled a die (getting a 3) to choose. There was more German banter as they shuffled before Faust kicked off Duel 2 with 2 back row cards and a Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame.

Grüner Special Summoned Cyber Dragon, attacking over Shura for 300 points of damage. He then Set a Spell or Trap, asked how many cards were in Faust’s hand (3) and ended.

Faust drew Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow, adding it to his hand of Icarus Attack, Thunder King Rai-Oh and Effect Veiler. He Set the Kalut and Icarus.

Grüner attacked again and Faust played Icarus Attack, destroying Cyber Dragon and Torrential Tribute. He Set a Spell or Trap, completing his turn.

Faust Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh and Grüner destroyed it with Torrential Tribute.

Grüner Summoned XX-Saber Boggart Knight, declined to use its effect (his hand was full of Spells and Traps) and attacked for 1900. He Set 2 of his Spells and Traps before ending.

Faust Normal Summoned Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North, targeted the Kalut in his Graveyard, and Special Summoned it in Defence Position. He then flipped Delta Crow – Anti Reverse and Grüner flipped Blizzard face-down with Book of Moon, losing his Solemn Judgment in the process.

Grüner activates his Book of Moon now since he won't get another chance!

Grüner drew for his turn and played Cold Wave before Summoning XX-Saber Darksoul. Darksoul attacked Blizzard, and Boggart Knight took down Kalut, leaving Faust with no monsters.

Faust drew Book of Moon, but was locked out by Cold Wave. He Summoned Blackwing  – Bora the Spear, destroyed Darksoul and Grüner added XX-Saber Emmersblade to his hand in the End Phase.

Grüner attacked Bora with Boggart Knight, destroying it, and Set a Spell or Trap.

Faust drew Icarus Attack, but had no Blackwing monster to combine it with. He Set 2 Spells and traps, along with Effect Veiler, passing back to Grüner.

Grüner drew, refused to Summon a monster (fearing Icarus), and took down Veiler with Boggart Knight.

Faust drew Thunder King Rai-Oh and Summoned it, only to have the Summon negated by Solemn Warning.

Grüner drew (after another call of “Yu-Gi-Ohhhhhhh!”), attacked with Boggart Knight but was stopped by Book of Moon. He Summoned his own Thunder King in Main Phase 2 and ended.

Faust drew Bottomless Trap Hole and set it.

Grüner drew Giant Trunade and immediately activated it, returning the Spells and Traps back to both Duelist’s hands. After this he declared ‘game’, revealed his hand and Faust conceded!

The hand that takes Michel Grüner to the finals!

Michel Grüner’s now in the final!

Grüner's die decided that Emergency Call was a better pick than Mirror Force.
