Finals: Long Dao vs. Paolo Pacchiana
28.04.2013 | 18:56
I know you’ve all been waiting for this: IT ALL CAME DOWN TO THIS!
828 players showed up to become the new YCS Winner and after 10 rounds of Swiss and 4 more rounds in the knock out portion of the tournament, only 2 have remained: Austria’s very own Long Dao and Italy’s Paolo Pacchiana!
Both are playing the most dominant this weekend; the only real difference is their Deck size. When I asked Pacchiana about his Deck size and he replied “40”, Dao simply commented: “Too mainstream!” He’s running a whopping 53 (!) cards. Let’s see if the Austrian can set a new trend here, shall we?
Pacchiana won the die roll and just as expected, he opted to go first. He Set a card to each zone and ended.
Genex Undine got Normal Summoned. Dao searched his Deck, sending Atlantean Dragoons to his Graveyard to add Mermail Abyssmegalo and Genex Controller to his hand. He also Set a Spell or Trap Card, it got destroyed by Mystical Space Typhoon (it was Breakthrough Skill) and that concluded the turn.
Dao Normal Summoned Genex Controller and he followed it up with Mind Control on Mermail Abysslinde. He used both monsters to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Zenmaines, he attacked with it and ended. The score was now 7200 (Dao) to 6500 (Pacchiana).
Play was back to Pacchiana, but he didn’t perform any actions.
Dao wanted to push his advantage. He went for Mermail Abyssmegalo, to which Pacchiana responded with Abyss-Sphere. This got Pacchiana Mermail Abysslinde, while Dao (who had discarded Atlantean Marksman and Atlantean Heavy Infantry) added Abyss-Sphere to his hand. He switched Wind-Up Zenmaines to Defense Position and ended. Pacchiana’s Mermail Abysslinde got destroyed during the End Phase, which meant he would get to add Mermail Abysspike to his side of the field. He discarded Atlantean Heavy Infantry, destroying Mermail Abyssmegalo, but the effect of Mermail Abysspike didn’t resolve since Dao used Breakthrough Skill on it.
Another Mermail Abysspike on his following turn with a discarded Mermail Abyssgunde now allowed Pacchiana to Special Summon Mermail Abysslinde. He checked his Extra Deck, Xyz Summon Bahamut Shark, detached 1 Xyz Material and that got him Mermail Abysstrite. He Set a Spell or Trap Card and play was back to Dao.
He used Mystical Space Typhoon on the face-down Spell or Trap Card.
Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord made an appearance and it cost Pacchiana Atlantean Marksman and Enemy Controller. Salvage was next in line, Dao then followed it up with Abyss-Sphere, Special Summoning Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck, he Normal Summoned Genex Controller and Tuned both of his monsters to Dewloren, Tiger King of the Ice Barrier. Wind-Up Zenmaines was shifted to Attack Position, it attacked into Bahamut Shark with Dao detaching one material, Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord then made short use of the Xyz Monster and Dewloren, Tiger King of the Ice Barrier attacked over Mermail Abysslinde.
Pacchiana Special Summoned Mermail Abyssmegalo and Dao used the effect of Wind-Up Zenmaines to destroy it during the End Phase.
Pacchiana used Pot of Avarice to refill his Deck and empty his Graveyard. He now had 3 cards in his hand, matching the count of Dao, but his opponent was clearly ahead with cards on the field.
Pacchiana had Deep Sea Diva, Mermail Abyssmegalo and Abyss-Sphere. He Normal Summoned Deep Sea Diva, went searching and found Atlantean Marksman. Once again, Pacchiana checked his Extra Deck. He Special Summoned Ally of Justice Catastor, shifted Mermail Abysstrite, he wanted to enter his Battle Phase, but Dao used Abyss-Sphere to add Mermail Abysspike. He discarded Atlantean Heavy Infantry to destroy Ally of Justice Catastor, Mermail Abysstrite attacked Dewloren, Tiger King of the Ice Barrier and that meant Pacchiana would get to Special Summon Mermail Abysslinde. He sent it right after Mermail Abysstrite into Dewloren, Tiger King of the Ice Barrier, this time Special Summoning Mermail Abyssleed. The third time’s the charm must have been what Pacchiana was thinking as this monster was finally strong enough to take down the Synchro Monster!
During the End Phase, Dao lost Abyss-Sphere. He then had Atlantean Marksman, he attacked with Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord over Mermail Abysstrite, an attack with Atlantean Marksman followed, to which Pacchiana responded with Abyss-Sphere. This got him Mermail Abysslinde, Dao attacked over it with Atlantean Marksman and Pacchiana Special Summoned Mermail Abyssmegalo in Defense Position. Dao wasted no time, shifting Wind-Up Zenmaines to Defense Position.
Deep Sea Diva was a strong topdeck for Dao! It got him Atlantean Marksman, he shifted Wind-Up Zenmaines to Attack Position, Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord attacked over Mermail Abyssmegalo and Atlantean Marksman followed suit. This got Dao Atlantean Dragoons, he attacked with it, Wind-Up Zenmaines followed, Deep Sea Diva was last and after both players confirmed with a judge the Life Totals again, Pacchiana agreed that he was in fact defeated.
Long Dao takes the lead!
It’s fascinating watching Long Dao using all the tools that the Mermails as well as the Atlantean monsters are providing him with. One should think that it’s not the smartest idea to stay that far ahead of the minimum Deck count, but this weekend, he’s proving us all wrong. All he now needed was one more win.
Pacchiana went first once again; he Set Abyss-Sphere and ended.
Dao Normal Summoned Atlantean Dragoons and he attacked directly with it. That worked. Instant Fusion followed, but Pacchiana dropped Maxx "C". Dao went for Abyss Dweller, Pacchiana drew another card, Dao Set 2 Spells or Traps and he ended.
Dao added Deep Sea Diva to his hand while Pacchiana sent Mermail Abyssmegalo straight to his Graveyard. He Normal Summoned Atlantean Dragoons, he acttacked Abyss Dweller and that meant Dao was left with 6900 Life Points while Pacchiana still had 6200 Life Points. Pacchiana Set a Spell or Trap Card and ended.
Dao Special Summoned Mermail Abyssteus, discarding Atlantean Marksman. Pacchiana Chained Abyss-Sphere, to which Dao Chained Maxx "C". He drew a card and then searched his Deck for Mermail Abysslinde, courtesy of Mermail Abyssteus. Pacchiana had added Mermail Abysslinde to his side of the field.
Mermail Abyssleed was next, it attacked over Atlantean Dragoons, Mermail Abyssteus opted not to attack and Dao instead went for a Xyz Summon during his Main Phase 2, adding Mermail Abyssgaios to his side of the field.
Pacchiana thought for a while what he should be Special Summoning. He decided on Mermail Abysspike, discarding Atlantean Dragoons, with Dao Chaining the effect of Mermail Abyssgaios. That meant the effect of Mermail Abysspike wouldn’t kick in, but Pacchiana was still allowed to add Mermail Abyssmegalo to his hand.
On his following turn, he drew into Mermail Abysslinde. He added Mermail Abysspike to his side of the field, with Mermail Abyssmegalo and Mermail Abysslinde ending up in the Graveyard. A second Mermail Abyssmegalo was now entering the field and Pacchiana added Abyss-Sphere to his hand. Pacchiana also found Mermail Abyssleed among the cards in his hand.
He Xyz Summoned Mermail Abyssgaios and Abyss Dweller, Set 1 Spell or Trap Card and ended.
Dao Normal Summoned Deep Sea Diva and Pacchiana had no immediate response. Dao went searching and found Atlantean Marksman. Instant Fusion followed, providing him with a Level 3 Fusion Monster. Together with Deep Sea Diva, it allowed him to Synchro Summon Ally of Justice Catastor, he attacked with his Mermail Abyssgaios over Abyss Dweller and Pacchiana detached a Material before it bit the dust.
Dao was now on 5600 Life Points while Pacchiana fell to 3400. Dao passed play.
Pacchiana drew into his second card: Mystical Space Typhoon. He confirmed the Life Points with a judge, giving away that he possibly had a chance to end the game right then and there.
He checked the contents of both Graveyards, he then went over his Extra Deck and Dao seemed like he had trouble staying awake or at least focused. Finally, Pacchiana detached a material of his Mermail Abyssgaios, he checked his Graveyard for a second time and finally, he activated Monster Reborn to bring back Mermail Abyssleed.
Dao had Mermail Abysspike, he discarded Mermail Abyssgunde, targeting Mermail Abysslinde and all that was fine with Pacchiana. Genex Undine got added to Dao’s hand, Mermail Abysslinde was raised from the
dead drowned, together with Atlantean Marksman it was used to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Zenmaines and Dao sent it into Mermail Abyssleed, detaching 1 material and falling down to 3400 Life Points. During the End Phase, Pacchiana lost his only monster.
The Italian Duelist drew for his turn, he checked his Extra Deck like he did the turn before, he checked his face-down cards and then Set a monster.
Dao Normal Summoned Genex Controller. He used it and Mermail Abysspike for Black Rose Dragon, wiping the field with only Wind-Up Zenmaines remaining. This got Pacchiana Mermail Abyssteus since his Set monster was revealed to be Mermail Abysslinde. Dao passed and Mermail Abyssteus got destroyed during the End Phase.
Dao found Genex Undine.
He flashed Monster Reborn.
Pacchiana extended the hand and Dao let out a victory cry!
Long Dao is the Winner of YCS Lille!
This seemed to be a pretty straightforward affair; Long Dao had been in total control for the most part of the match and he gave Pacchiana very few outs to ever gain the upper hand.
In the end, his perseverance – also regarding the fact that he constantly defended the decision to run more than 50 cards – proved to be the secret ingredient he needed to become a YCS Winner!
Congratulations again to Long Dao, a great Champion and one of Austria’s finest!
