Finals: Stephan Sluis (Dino Rabbit) vs. Fabian Renner (Inzektors)

[p]More than 1100 Duelists tried to accomplish what these 2 pulled off: Advancing to the very last and most important match of the day, the final of Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series Leipzig! On the one side, we have Fabian Renner, who just overcame Ioannis Mourelatos in the semi finals. On the other side, we can see a very relaxed Stephan Sluis, a Duelist who’s well aware of playing at the highest level and who now made Top 8 at 3 YCS in a row!
[/p][p]
Renner won the die roll and opted to go first.
[/p][nbsp]

Could Sluis pull off the seemingly impossible and become a 2 time YCS Winner?!
Could Sluis pull off the seemingly impossible and become a 2 time YCS Winner?!

[nbsp][p]
[tour guide] got him [sangan], he used both monsters to Xyz Summon [zenmaines], he Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][p]
Sluis drew for his turn and brought out [saurus]. He Set a Spell or Trap and ended.
[/p][p]
Back to Renner, who used [duality] to reveal [reborn], [i fly] and [allure]. He picked [allure] and activated it, drawing 2 and banishing [i fly]. [mst] got rid of [fiendish], [zenmaines] attacked into the stronger [saurus], detaching one material and during the End Phase, [saurus] bit the dust thanks to [zenmaines]'[s] effect.
[/p][p]
Sluis passed without performing any actions.
[/p][p]
Renner attacked with [zenmaines] and ended.

[nbsp][p]
[reborn] brought back [saurus]. Sluis asked about Renner’s cards in hand (5) and then activated [storm]. This destroyed [mf]. [guaiba] was [ns]ed and [saurus] attacked over [zenmaines]. Renner did not activate the effect (he didn’t want [guaiba] to trigger its effect). During [mp] 2, Sluis used both of his monsters to Xyz Summon into [laggia]. He Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][p]
Renner, ever the defensive player, simply Set 2 Spells or Traps.
[/p][p]
Sluis [ns]ed [tour guide]. Renner had to consider his response, he checked his face-down cards and he eventually decided that it was all good. [tour guide]'[s] effect was activated, [maxx] was chained and out came [sangan]. [tour guide] attacked and Renner used [fiendish] on [laggia]. That was fine with Renner and [tour guide] dealt 1000 Damage. [sangan] followed suit and Sluis passed.

[nbsp][p]
[hole] wiped the field. Sluis searched for [rabbit]. Renner was far from running out of gas with 5 cards in his hand. Still, he only Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][p]
Sluis [ns]ed [kabaz]. He attacked and ended. Renner was now on 3500 Life Points.
[/p][p]
Renner flipped [mst] in his back row to destroy Sluis’s Set [sj]. He then activated [reborn], targeting [laggia]. [maxx] was discarded so Sluis would draw a card. [laggia] attacked successfully over [kabaz], that meant Sluis fell to 5800 Life Points and Renner Set a second Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
This time it was Sluis who used [hole] to clear the field. He [ns]ed [rabbit]. Renner had no response, but when [rabbit] left the field, [warning] was activated to negate that. Sluis Set a Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Renner drew and [dustshoot] was activated.

[nbsp][p]
[gorz] was sent right back to Renner’s hand. He Set a card to each zone and passed.
[/p][p]
Sluis drew into [poa]. He returned [kabaz], [saurus], [laggia], [sangan] and [tour guide] to his respective Decks. He drew [mst] and [fiendish]. Without performing any actions, he passed his turn.
[/p][p]
Renner seemed a little perplexed, but he found just the right response on his following turn: [reaper]! He also [fs]ed [i fly], [reaper] caused Sluis to discard [fiendish], [i fly] took another shot, leaving Sluis on 4500 Life Points and in [mp] 2, [17] was Xyz Summoned.
[/p][p]
Sluis used [mst] on [coth], but Renner chained it to bring back [sangan] temporarily. He searched his Deck for [i fly]. Sluis revealed the card he just drew: [rabbit]! Probably his best possible topdeck! He summoned it, went for [laggia] after [ss]ing 2 Dinos to the field, revealed the last card in his hand, [mind], and Renner knew it was over!
[/p][nbsp]

Stephan Sluis is only 1 win away from becoming a 2 time YCS Winner!

[nbsp][p]
Sluis was hanging in the ropes and it seemed like there was no way he could still turn this game around. Drawing into [rabbit], however, was exactly what he needed and it allowed him to claim victory all the while standing on the brink of defeat! Could he do it again and add another title to his impressive resume?!

[nbsp][p]
Renner kicked things off again, this time with [tour guide]. Its effect was activated and resolved successfully, netting Renner another copy of the Fiend from his Deck. Both were Tuned to [zenmaines], he Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][p]
Sluis used [mst] on his opponent’s [mst]. He Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][p]
Renner switched [zenmaines] to [atk]. It dealt 1500 points of damage, Renner Set a card to each zone and he passed. Sluis flipped [macro] during the End Phase.
[/p][p]
[mst] by Sluis caused Renner to chain his second [mst], destroying [macro]. [rabbit] was [ns]ed and left the field to bring out 2 [kabaz]. Both attacked into [zenmaines]. In [mp] 2, [dolkka] was [ss]ed and it used its effect to destroy [zenmaines].
[/p][nbsp]

Dolkka was the one Xyz Monster remaining on the field, but not for long!

[nbsp][p]
Renner now [fs]ed [ryko], but [dolkka]'[s] effect was used once more, destroying the Lightsworn Monster. [tour guide] was [ns]ed and it got Renner [sangan] from his Deck. He Xyz Summoned into [17], detached [sangan] and attacked [dolkka]. That worked and Sluis was left with no field. Renner Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][p]
Play was back to Sluis, who activated his third [mst]. He destroyed a Set [duality]. [tour guide] was [ns]ed next and it invited [sangan] to the party. Both were used to Xyz Summon [leviair], [sangan] was detached and [rabbit] returned to the field. Not for long, though, as Sluis Tributed it for its own effect to [ss] 2 [saurus]. One [saurus] attacked [17] and [lance] from Sluis’s hand made sure the attack went through. An attack with [leviair] followed and the second [saurus] also went through, leaving Renner on 3700. In [mp] 2, both Dinos were used to Xyz Summon [laggia]. It seemed like Sluis had this one in the bag!
[/p][nbsp]

[nbsp][p]
Renner attempted to [ns] [i fly] and Sluis had to think a little longer whether he should use [laggia]'[s] effect. 2 cards left in Renner’s hand, so Sluis went for the gamble, detaching both materials to negate the play. Renner checked both Graveyards, so it seemed like he was onto something. “It is not [bls]!… It’s [reborn]!”, Sluis instantly knew. [reborn] it was and it brought back [17]. Renner attacked over [leviair] and passed.
[/p][p]
Slusi now had [smash] and [reborn]. [saurus] attacked directly and the last card in Renner’s hand hit the field: [gorz]!!![br]
“Woooooow… that was SO unexpected”, was all Sluis had to say about the move. [laggia] attacked over the token, then Sluis had to end his turn.
[/p][p]
Renner switched [gorz] to [atk] and attacked over [kabaz]. He Set a Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]

[/p][p]
Renner attacked over [laggia]. He Set another Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]

[/p][p]
[rai oh] hit and left the field, thanks to [tt].
[/p][p]
Sluis only Set a Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Renner passed without performing any actions.
[/p][p]
Nothing happened the following 2 turns.
[/p][p]
Sluis now found [reaper]! It was stopped by [fiendish].

[/p][p]
Renner activated [allure], drawing 2 and banishing [reaper]. He Set a card to each zone and passed.
[/p][p]
Sluis checked Renner’s Graveyard before making his next play: He activated [hole]. Renner lost [ryko] and [maxx]. That concluded the turn.
[/p][p]
This time it was Renner who checked Sluis’s Graveyard. He activated [storm], then [ns]ed [rai oh] and he attacked directly. “Is it game?”, Sluis asked, but no, he was left with 700 Life Points! Renner Set a Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Sluis activated [mst] on Renner’s Set [foolish]. He Set a card to each zone.
[/p][p]
[rai oh] attacked over [guaiba]. Renner added a second back row card.

[/p][p]
Sluis did so as well.
[/p][p]
[duality] got Renner [i fly]. He activated [hole], then [ns]ed [i fly] and the following attack was enough to equal the score!
[/p][nbsp]

Fabian Renner equals the score!

[nbsp][p]
Wow, what a game! Stephan Sluis was well on his way winning the Duel, but Renner’s last card, the mighty [gorz], provided him with an amazing out and allowed him to turn the game around!
[/p][p]
“The chances were so low”, Sluis complained, still feeling confident he made the right play. He then drew into his opening 6.
[/p][nbsp]

Sluis had to dig deep to find the necessary concentration for the last Duel!

[nbsp][p]
[tour guide] marked the start of the last Duel of the day. It allowed Sluis to [ss] [sangan], which was then used together with [tour guide] to Xyz Summon [zenmaines]. Sluis Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][p]
Renner used [mst] to destroy Sluis’s Set [macro]. He [ns]ed [i fly], but [veiler] was used to negate the effect. Renner passed.
[/p][p]
Sluis [ns]ed [guaiba] and he attacked over [i fly]. This allowed him to [ss] another copy of the monster. During [mp] 2, he [ss]ed [dolkka] to the field and he also Set a Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Renner drew 2 with [allure] and banished [i pede]. [hole] followed, but Sluis flipped [lance], targeting [dolkka]. [zenmaines] detached one of his Materials to stay on the field as well. Renner [ns]ed [rai oh] and attacked over [dolkka]. He Set a Spell or Trap and passed. During the End Phase, [rai oh] was destroyed by [zenmaines]'[s] effect.

[/p][p]
[ryko] was [fs]ed, but [fiendish] was chained.
[/p][p]
Sluis had [saurus] and attacked over [ryko]
[/p][p]
[i hornet] equipped itself with another copy, destroyed the Dino and attacked directly.
[/p][p]
Sluis now [ns]ed [tour guide] and he brought out another copy. [maxx] was discarded in response. The first attack concluded and destroyed [i pede]. Not fearing [gorz], Sluis attacked for another 1000 after some consideration.
[/p][p]
[duality] revealed 2 copies of [fiendish] and [storm]. One copy of the Trap was added to Renner’s hand, he [ns]ed [rai oh] and attacked over [tour guide]. That left Sluis with 6200 Life Points. He Set a Spell or Trap and passed.

[/p][p]
Renner Set a card to each zone.
[/p][p]
Sluis’s [mst] destroyed Renner’s. [guaiba] attacked over the Set [i hornet]. Sluis couldn’t [ss] another copy.
[/p][p]
Renner could only Set a Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Sluis attacked and there was nothing Renner had to keep [guaiba] at bay. That meant we just watched the last attack of the day!
[/p][nbsp]

Stephan Sluis overcomes Fabian Renner!

[nbsp][p]
Asked about his play, Sluis was quick to point out that he shouldn’t have summoned [kabaz] first and then used [mst] (not giving Renner a chance to activate [tt]). Also, he felt he was a little too greedy the second game; if he would have just waited another turn, [gorz] wouldn’t have been as back breaking and he could have still won that game!
[/p][p]
Once the realization set in that Sluis just became the first ever two-time European YCS Winner, all that seemed a little less imporant. There was no point arguing it and I think a few words of encouragement are in order!
[/p][p]
[b]Congratulations to Stephan Sluis, your YCS Leipzig Winner![/b]
