Finals: Stephan Sluis (Dino Rabbit) vs. Fabian Renner (Inzektors)
26.02.2012 | 18:05
More than 1100 Duelists tried to accomplish what these 2 pulled off: Advancing to the very last and most important match of the day, the final of Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series Leipzig! On the one side, we have Fabian Renner, who just overcame Ioannis Mourelatos in the semi finals. On the other side, we can see a very relaxed Stephan Sluis, a Duelist who’s well aware of playing at the highest Level and who now made Top 8 at 3 YCS in a row!
Renner won the die roll and opted to go first.
Sluis drew for his turn and brought out Sabersaurus. He Set a Spell or Trap and ended.
Back to Renner, who used Pot of Duality to reveal Monster Reborn, Inzektor Dragonfly and Allure of Darkness. He picked Allure of Darkness and activated it, drawing 2 and banishing Inzektor Dragonfly. Mystical Space Typhoon got rid of Fiendish Chain, Wind-Up Zenmaines attacked into the stronger Sabersaurus, detaching one material and during the End Phase, Sabersaurus bit the dust thanks to Wind-Up Zenmaines's effect.
Sluis passed without performing any actions.
Renner attacked with Wind-Up Zenmaines and ended.
Monster Reborn brought back Sabersaurus. Sluis asked about Renner’s cards in hand (5) and then activated Heavy Storm. This destroyed Mirror Force. Jurrac Guaiba was Normal Summoned and Sabersaurus attacked over Wind-Up Zenmaines. Renner did not activate the effect (he didn’t want Jurrac Guaiba to trigger its effect). During Main Phase 2, Sluis used both of his monsters to Xyz Summon into Evolzar Laggia. He Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
Renner, ever the defensive player, simply Set 2 Spells or Traps.
Sluis Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld. Renner had to consider his response, he checked his face-down cards and he eventually decided that it was all good. Tour Guide From the Underworld's effect was activated, Maxx "C" was Chained and out came Sangan. Tour Guide From the Underworld attacked and Renner used Fiendish Chain on Evolzar Laggia. That was fine with Renner and Tour Guide From the Underworld dealt 1000 Damage. Sangan followed suit and Sluis passed.
Sluis Normal Summoned Kabazauls. He attacked and ended. Renner was now on 3500 Life Points.
Renner flipped Mystical Space Typhoon in his back row to destroy Sluis’s Set Solemn Judgment. He then activated Monster Reborn, targeting Evolzar Laggia. Maxx "C" was discarded so Sluis would draw a card. Evolzar Laggia attacked successfully over Kabazauls, that meant Sluis fell to 5800 Life Points and Renner Set a second Spell or Trap.
This time it was Sluis who used Dark Hole to clear the field. He Normal Summoned Rescue Rabbit. Renner had no response, but when Rescue Rabbit left the field, Solemn Warning was activated to negate that. Sluis Set a Spell or Trap.
Renner drew and Trap Dustshoot was activated.
Gorz the Emissary of Darkness was sent right back to Renner’s hand. He Set a card to each zone and passed.
Sluis drew into Pot of Avarice. He returned Kabazauls, Sabersaurus, Evolzar Laggia, Sangan and Tour Guide From the Underworld to his respective Decks. He drew Mystical Space Typhoon and Fiendish Chain. Without performing any actions, he passed his turn.
Renner seemed a little perplexed, but he found just the right response on his following turn: Spirit Reaper! He also Flip Summoned Inzektor Dragonfly, Spirit Reaper caused Sluis to discard Fiendish Chain, Inzektor Dragonfly took another shot, leaving Sluis on 4500 Life Points and in Main Phase 2, Number 17: Leviathan Dragon was Xyz Summoned.
Sluis used Mystical Space Typhoon on Call of the Haunted, but Renner Chained it to bring back Sangan temporarily. He searched his Deck for Inzektor Dragonfly. Sluis revealed the card he just drew: Rescue Rabbit! Probably his best possible topdeck! He Summoned it, went for Evolzar Laggia after Special Summoning 2 Dinos to the field, revealed the last card in his hand, Mind Control, and Renner knew it was over!
Stephan Sluis is only 1 win away from becoming a 2 time YCS Winner!
Sluis was hanging in the ropes and it seemed like there was no way he could still turn this game around. Drawing into Rescue Rabbit, however, was exactly what he needed and it allowed him to claim victory all the while standing on the brink of defeat! Could he do it again and add another title to his impressive resume?!
Renner kicked things off again, this time with Tour Guide From the Underworld. Its effect was activated and resolved successfully, netting Renner another copy of the Fiend from his Deck. Both were Tuned to Wind-Up Zenmaines, he Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
Mystical Space Typhoon by Sluis caused Renner to Chain his second Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying Macro Cosmos. Rescue Rabbit was Normal Summoned and left the field to bring out 2 Kabazauls. Both attacked into Wind-Up Zenmaines. In Main Phase 2, Evolzar Dolkka was Special Summoned and it used its effect to destroy Wind-Up Zenmaines.
Renner now Flip Summoned Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter, but Evolzar Dolkka's effect was used once more, destroying the Lightsworn Monster. Tour Guide From the Underworld was Normal Summoned and it got Renner Sangan from his Deck. He Xyz Summoned into Number 17: Leviathan Dragon, detached Sangan and attacked Evolzar Dolkka. That worked and Sluis was left with no field. Renner Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
Play was back to Sluis, who activated his third Mystical Space Typhoon. He destroyed a Set Pot of Duality. Tour Guide From the Underworld was Normal Summoned next and it invited Sangan to the party. Both were used to Xyz Summon Leviair the Sea Dragon, Sangan was detached and Rescue Rabbit returned to the field. Not for long, though, as Sluis Tributed it for its own effect to Special Summon 2 Sabersaurus. One Sabersaurus attacked Number 17: Leviathan Dragon and Forbidden Lance from Sluis’s hand made sure the attack went through. An attack with Leviair the Sea Dragon followed and the second Sabersaurus also went through, leaving Renner on 3700. In Main Phase 2, both Dinos were used to Xyz Summon Evolzar Laggia. It seemed like Sluis had this one in the bag!
Renner attempted to Normal Summon Inzektor Dragonfly and Sluis had to think a little longer whether he should use Evolzar Laggia's effect. 2 cards left in Renner’s hand, so Sluis went for the gamble, detaching both materials to negate the play. Renner checked both Graveyards, so it seemed like he was onto something. “It is not Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning!… It’s Monster Reborn!”, Sluis instantly knew. Monster Reborn it was and it brought back Number 17: Leviathan Dragon. Renner attacked over Leviair the Sea Dragon and passed.
Slusi now had Smashing Ground and Monster Reborn. Sabersaurus attacked directly and the last card in Renner’s hand hit the field: Gorz the Emissary of Darkness!!!
“Woooooow… that was SO unexpected”, was all Sluis had to say about the move. Evolzar Laggia attacked over the Token, then Sluis had to end his turn.
Sluis Set a Spell or Trap.
Renner attacked over Evolzar Laggia. He Set another Spell or Trap.
Sluis only Set a Spell or Trap.
Renner passed without performing any actions.
Nothing happened the following 2 turns.
Renner Set a card to each zone.
Sluis switched Spirit Reaper to Defense Position and passed.
This time it was Renner who checked Sluis’s Graveyard. He activated Heavy Storm, then Normal Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh and he attacked directly. “Is it game?”, Sluis asked, but no, he was left with 700 Life Points! Renner Set a Spell or Trap.
Sluis now drew into Tour Guide From the Underworld!
Renner Set a third Spell or Trap.
Renner Set a monster.
Sluis did so as well.
Fabian Renner equals the score!
Wow, what a game! Stephan Sluis was well on his way winning the Duel, but Renner’s last card, the mighty Gorz the Emissary of Darkness, provided him with an amazing out and allowed him to turn the game around!
“The chances were so low”, Sluis complained, still feeling confident he made the right play. He then drew into his opening 6.
Tour Guide From the Underworld marked the start of the last Duel of the day. It allowed Sluis to Special Summon Sangan, which was then used together with Tour Guide From the Underworld to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Zenmaines. Sluis Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
Sluis Normal Summoned Jurrac Guaiba and he attacked over Inzektor Dragonfly. This allowed him to Special Summon another copy of the monster. During Main Phase 2, he Special Summoned Evolzar Dolkka to the field and he also Set a Spell or Trap.
Renner drew 2 with Allure of Darkness and banished Inzektor Centipede. Dark Hole followed, but Sluis flipped Forbidden Lance, targeting Evolzar Dolkka. Wind-Up Zenmaines detached one of his Materials to stay on the field as well. Renner Normal Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh and attacked over Evolzar Dolkka. He Set a Spell or Trap and passed. During the End Phase, Thunder King Rai-Oh was destroyed by Wind-Up Zenmaines's effect.
Renner Set a monster.
Sluis Set a Spell or Trap.
Inzektor Hornet equipped itself with another copy, destroyed the Dino and attacked directly.
Sluis now Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and he brought out another copy. Maxx "C" was discarded in response. The first attack concluded and destroyed Inzektor Centipede. Not fearing Gorz the Emissary of Darkness, Sluis attacked for another 1000 after some consideration.
Pot of Duality revealed 2 copies of Fiendish Chain and Heavy Storm. One copy of the Trap was added to Renner’s hand, he Normal Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh and attacked over Tour Guide From the Underworld. That left Sluis with 6200 Life Points. He Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
Sluis switched Tour Guide From the Underworld to Defense Position and passed after Setting a Spell or Trap.
Renner Set a card to each zone.
Renner could only Set a Spell or Trap.
Sluis attacked and there was nothing Renner had to keep Jurrac Guaiba at bay. That meant we just watched the last attack of the day!
Stephan Sluis overcomes Fabian Renner!
Asked about his play, Sluis was quick to point out that he shouldn’t have Summoned Kabazauls first and then used Mystical Space Typhoon (not giving Renner a chance to activate Torrential Tribute). Also, he felt he was a little too greedy the second game; if he would have just waited another turn, Gorz the Emissary of Darkness wouldn’t have been as back breaking and he could have still won that game!
Once the realization set in that Sluis just became the first ever two-time European YCS Winner, all that seemed a little less imporant. There was no point arguing it and I think a few words of encouragement are in order!
Congratulations to Stephan Sluis, your YCS Leipzig Winner!
