James’ (ultimate) Battle Pack 2 Deck!

31.08.2013 | 20:15 |

Earlier today you saw Robert’s Deck Pool and what he did with it. It’s only human that you’ve been on the edge of your seat waiting for mine, and I don’t like to disappoint. So without further ego-boosting ado, let’s take a look at what fate gave me to play with!

This might not be the best pool you see all weekend – certainly not as good as Robert’s earlier – but it’s not by a long way the worst. What I really like about the pool is that while there are no “10/10” cards which some people will have, there are more than enough “7/10” cards to keep a foothold in any game.

There is a lot of utility in terms of flexible monsters – both ones that act as beatsticks and ones that allow the boss monsters to hit the field. It’s not quite got enough damage step attack modifiers for my liking but the mixed usage cards like Mausoleum, Earthquake and Pot of Duality allow more options.

I’m going to have to make the Deck focus on getting bigger monsters on to the field as opposed to relying on removal and attack modifiers like a lot of other people will be doing. Baring that in mind, here is the 30 card list I would use with this pool:

As you can see, I’ve really had to sacrifice some elements I would love to have had in the Deck (double [ccd], [chalice], [reckless], [bts]) for things that better support the overall Deck idea: get a boss monster out – preferably one that’s immune to modifiers like [agg] or [titano] – and take down the opponent with it.

Great in theory – but how will it work in testing? We’ll let you know later in the weekend. Would you have played this card pool differently? Looking at pools and deciding what you would do with them is one of the best ways to prepare for a sealed YCS and make sure you have the highest chance of making the top cut. Being well prepared is how you can make sure you make the least amount of misplays – sometimes this will mean you can win games against opponents with stronger cards than you.
[h2]Check back later in the weekend to see what Oli did with his pool and how the Decks play out![/h2]
