Parents & Opinions: Jennifer McKeen

At the parental area we spotted Jennifer. She came here to accompany her two son to the WCQ. We were curious to find out what made her come here, how she feels about her sons playing [ygo].

Hi Jennifer, what made you come to Utrecht?
My son Sam is playing in the Dragon Duel here today. He won the National Championship of Ireland. Both of my sons entered the World Championship Qualifier and one of them ended up winning it. I’m very proud of both. Sam’s brother is only 6 years old and he was the youngest contestant.

How do feel about your sons playing [ygo]?
I’m very happy with it. It is a wonderful strategy game and I like that it involves some sort if math as well as sportsmanship. I like how they learn to shake hands before and after each duel, that they learn to solve problems and how deal with defeat. I guess it is a very valuable lesson for life.

How do support your kids?
Almost every Sunday I take them to the “Warchest” that’s our local store in Dublin. There is really good community there that has been very welcoming of the boys. We spend there about three hours every Sunday and I get a lot of reading. It’s out first time that we travelled so far for them to play [ygo].

Have you ever tried to play [ygo] yourself?
I tried it myself, but I never managed to beat any of my children. Whenever I play one of them the other is siding with me and the other way round.

Impression from the event?
I’m amazed on how many people are here. It really shows how popular the game is. I wasn’t expecting that. I think it attracts a very special kind of player who are good with strategy. What I’m really impressed with is the good sportsmanship among Duelists. I really wish there were more girls or women playing the game. Probably a “Bring you sister!” event could change that.
