PJ’s Battle Pack Deck

[p]To get into the spirit of Sealed Play and YCS Sheffield, the coverage team has their own pools of cards today, and we’ve been asked to construct our Decks as if we were competing in the event. Here’s what I got, and the Deck I put together![/p]

Here is my full list of cards. Right away I separate my cards into Xyz Monsters / Main Deck Monsters / Spell Cards and Trap Cards. That way I can see everything more clearly and go from there.

Here are the piles split up. I have 4 Xyz Monsters, 3 Rank 3s and a Rank 4.

[p]After separating my cards into their card types, I first look at the most powerful cards I have gotten. These are the cards that should be most powerful even when not combined with others. Fortunately, almost all of my Spell cards make it in there right away; [bom], [fchalice], [pod], [burden], [rai] and [hfd] are all incredible cards and the first to go into my Deck.

Looking at my Trap Cards I do the same thing and add [fchain], [sj], [kunai] and [reckless]. That puts my Main Deck total to 10 cards for now, a solid Spell and Trap Card lineup which would work well the majority of the time. Now it’s time to add monsters.

The first thing to do when I get to my monsters is to sort them by Level. The monsters that need to be Tribute Summoned go in one pile, and the rest another. despite being a Level 8 monster, [dmoc] simply has to go into the Deck, as I have so many powerful Spell Cards to bring back with its effect. [dds] and [sphinx] both have strong effects too, so they go in as well. Even though I have a [soul ex], I’ve decided to go with just the 3 higher Level monsters mentioned, so I won’t be needing it or adding any more. It’s important to have cards “live” whenever possible, as being stuck with a monster you can’t Summon could be the difference between victory and defeat.

Looking at the lower level monsters, the ones that immediately stand out are [mjar], [ovm], [hguard], [krebons], [deko] and [blast]. Next it’s the high ATK monsters I can Summon right away; [iknight], [mdog], [w sol], [agk] and [gaf]. At this point I go back to my Spell Cards and add in 2 [ego] as they’ll help a lot with taking down stronger monsters. Seeing as I have a lot of Rank 3 Xyz Monsters, [gil], [gyroid] and [raven] are added to the Deck.

That leaves me with 1 more card to add, and after a lot of thought I went with [sspell]. The Battle Phase is very important in Sealed Play as it’s when most monsters are destroyed, and anything I can do to take down opposing monsters will come in useful. Here’s how my final Deck looks now![/p]

It looks like a pretty strong Deck! It would certainly be fun to see how this Deck would have done in the tournament, but maybe there are ever better Decks out there, who knows?
