Quick Questions: Tell us your best Bad Beat Story

30.11.2013 | 20:36 |

After 5 rounds of fierce competition, we see the first larger decline in the player total. There are quite a few competitive players that fear they won’t have a chance to advance to the knock out portion of this weekend’s event after a less successful start, so they prefer to focus on the Public Events instead.

In fact, we’re down to triple digit attendance, with currently “only” 943 players remaining after almost 400 players have dropped already. I tried to pick out some of the affected Duelists to sit down with them and ask them how they adapted to this new circumstance; after all, there’s plenty to do at a YCS weekend apart from the main event. Oh, and while they were at it, they could also share their best Bad Beat Story with us…
So I’m playing Chain Burn and my opponent is down to a meagre 150 Life Points. I was 4 – 0 in the tournament at that time and thought I would now end up on 5 – 0 since I had a [lava golem] to get rid of all my opponent’s monsters and he had no cards remaining in his hand or on his side of the field.

He then, naturally, drew into … [bom].

He activated it during the Draw Phase and this lead to my first loss today.
That’s certainly what I’d be calling a “bad beat”. Let’s see what Mustafa could tell us.
I was playing Geargia today and I didn’t know all the tricks of the trade of the archetype. So I made a few mistakes that ended up costing me games that I could have won normally.

Next time, I’ll definitely do more playtesting prior to the event to make sure that this won’t happen again.
We have seen Fabio Minicozzi in our Round 2 Feature Match earlier and he seems to be having a very tough time today.

Things weren't really working out for Fabio this weekend!
I played against Joshua Schmidt and he found Cards of Consonance, [7ss], he then found a Tuner, he went for [scrap dragon], followed it up with [6s] for 5 cards in his Graveyard and he then activated [return]. That meant that I couldn’t turn things around anymore!

I dropped with a 1 – 1 record since I couldn’t focus enough. I was happy that I got the Game Mat, so after that, I felt like I’ve reached my goal for the day. I never played Dragon Rulers before, so it was very tiresome for me to try and put up a strong opposition, so I instead opted to try my luck in the Public Events.

In the future, I hope that the Scrap archetype will receive another push so I can start playing it again…
Andrea Giacobone pulled a Secret Rare Mistake, so he's not feeling too bad about enrolling today.
I lost to Dragon Rulers in the first two rounds, I ended up playing the wrong opponent in the third round because there was a mix-up with the pairings with the wrong player sitting down. I won this game because my opponent didn’t show up in time after that, but I still didn’t feel like continuing in the Main Event, so I focused on Public Events instead.

I enrolled in a Regional Qualifier and lost in the second round, so I’ll now watch my friends for a while before trying my luck in another tournament again.

Next time, I will certainly not play one of the popular Decks. All my friends that have played them dropped as well, so I’ll instead show up with a more creative Deck that fewer opponents are expecting. I think this is the right way to go and if it’s not working out, there are always Public Events which are still plenty of fun.
Fortunately, plenty of Public Events will give many of these players a lot to do for the rest of the weekend. And if all else fails, you could always check out beautiful Turin like the Brotherhood of the Van Camps!
