QQ: What cards would you like to open?

31.08.2013 | 10:18 |

At the time I’m writing this up, deck construction is underway and many of Europe’s most skillful Duelists are trying to come up with the best strategy to build the best possible deck and advance to Day 2. I sat down with some players prior to the player meeting and asked them what they’d like to open and here’s what they had to say…

Mathijs Schuurman only had to cross 1 border this time!

Mathijs, what card would you like to open today?
Mathijs: [agk] – I played it in my locals and everytime I was able to summon it, I won the game because of it. I hope it will be the same today!
“Isn’t it a little hard to summon?”
Well, there are some cards that create Tokens that you can then use to Tribute and you also got [mausoleum] in case you’re really lucky, so there are ways to make it work.
What cards do you hope to open today?
Claudio: I’m hoping for the “Machine gun combo”, it consists of [evo ch] and [cursed armaments]. If you summon [evo ch] for the second time, you can destroy [cursed armaments] to destroy an opposing card, in turn triggering its effect which allows you to bring it right back. You can repeat this move over and over again until your opponent lost all of his cards!

Michael: [moaa] – it will help you generate some card advantage, something that few cards can do in the format. Since the card even saw some constructed play, I expect it to make some big waves this weekend!

[proar] is also very good since it’s one of the few cards that you can active in the Damage Step. There are next to no ways to counter it, so it’s also pretty much guaranteed to get you ahead.
Next in line was Manuel who came over from Texas to play in this event!
Manuel: I’m not sure, there are quite a few good cards. [reborn] seems like one of the easy choices, it can easily make the difference!
“Anything else?”
Maybe [mof], to get back [reborn] and play it a second time!
[nbsp]
Haha, that will definitely work. Let’s head back to some European players like…

Lukas Prinz from Bremen, Germany
Lukas: I’m hoping for [lance], [truck] and [slifer]. The first 2 since they are really good cards that can win games single-handedly and [slifer], well, because I just like the card a lot and I want it for my collection!

What I like about the format is that you need to adapt to the card pool and play accordingly. Here’s an easy example: Switching a monster to [def] since you’re afraid of [mf] would be a big misplay, even though that move is perfectly fine in Constructed. I’m curious to see how many players will have understood that some of the “general rules” are no longer in place this weekend.
Frank Feith, Martin Feith, Johann Keuchel came over from Trier, which took them less than 3 hours.
[agk] – we think it’s the best card in the format. There’s plenty of support in the set to either protect your monsters on the field or make Tribute Summoning easier. Once [agk] hits the field, there’s next to nothing your opponent can do to stop you and you’ll easily dominate the rest of the game!
[nbsp]
So there you have it. What do you think, do you agree with the suggestions of our featured players or is there something else in the format that will easily beat everything your opponent can throw at you?
