Quarter Finals: Joschua Schmidt (Wind-Up) vs. Luca Meroni (Inzektors)

08.07.2012 | 16:05 |

One more win! One more win! That’s all it takes to advance to the Semi Finals and, more importantly, to the World Championship! Among the 8 players that still have a shot at making it are Joschua Schmidt from Germany and Luca Meroni from Italy. I sat down next to them and watch them play. Who will represent Europe? We’ll know in just a bit!

Schmidt rolled a 6 and Meroni couldn’t quite match it with a 2. So Schmidt opted to go first.

Joschua Schmidt seemed a little beaten up, but he was eager to get his game going!

Joschua Schmidt seemed a little beaten up, but he was eager to get his game going!

Tour Guide From the Underworld got him Sangan from his Deck and he used both monsters to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity. Sangan was detached and Wind-Up Hunter came out. Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity got Tributed, Meroni lost his Sangan, Schmidt then followed it up with Monster Reborn on Sangan, he Special Summoned another Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity and this time he added Wind-Up Rat to his side of the field. It brought back Wind-Up Hunter, which then Tributed Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity and that cost Meroni Inzektor Centipede

The third time’s the charm as they say and this time Meroni lost Safe Zone. Schmidt was left with Wind-Up Hunter and Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity on his side of the field, he Set 2 Spells or Traps and ended.

Schmidt wouldn't give Meroni an opening!

Inzektor Centipede ended up in Bottomless Trap Hole. Mystical Space Typhoon from Schmidt destroy Torrential Tribute and Meroni had 1 more Set card.

It got destroyed on Schmidt’s following turn as he found another Mystical Space Typhoon. Call of the Haunted got Chained for Sangan, however, and this helped Meroni add Maxx "C" to his hand. Schmidt activated the effect of Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity and Meroni discarded Maxx "C" in response to draw a card. Attacks followed of Wind-Up Hunter, Wind-Up Rabbit and Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity.

Meroni Set a card to each zone.

Schmidt Normal Summoned Wind-Up Magician and he used Wind-Up Rabbit. He Special Summoned Wind-Up Magician from his Deck and used both Magicians to Xyz Summon Number 39: Utopia. He switched Wind-Up Hunter to Defense Position, attacked over Inzektor Dragonfly with Number 39: Utopia and Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity attacked directly. He Set a second Spell or Trap and ended.

Meroni tried to hang on with Call of the Haunted!

Meroni activated Call of the Haunted on his following turn, trying to bring back Inzektor Centipede. It attacked Wind-Up Hunter and destroyed it. Meroni Set a Spell or Trap and ended.

Schmidt now drew into Wind-Up Factory. He Normal Summoned Wind-Up Rabbit. That meant that Wind-Up Factory would trigger and Schmidt searched his Deck for Wind-Up Rat. He used its effect to bring back Wind-Up Hunter and both were then Tuned to Wind-Up Zenmaines. He attacked with Wind-Up Zenmaines, Meroni used Safe Zone, but Schmidt Chained Compulsory Evacuation Device to remove its target! That meant that Meroni had no way of defending himself from the following attacks!

Joschua Schmidt ist just 1 win away from going to Worlds!

In game one, Joschua Schmidt had all the right tools to throw a huge obstacle in his way right from the beginning.

Luca Meroni wanted to turn this match around!

Meroni Set a card to each zone.

Schmidt Set a monster and 2 back row cards.

Sangan was Flip Summoned and its attack ended in Sangan. Schmidt added Wind-Up Shark to his hand. Meroni Set a second Spell or Trap, which fell victim to Mystical Space Typhoon: Bottomless Trap Hole.

Heavy Storm followed the next turn. Then Wind-Up Magician, Wind-Up Shark, another Wind-Up Magician from the Deck, which got Schmidt Wind-Up Hunter and he Tributed Wind-Up Magician, discarding D.D. Crow (!!!) from Meroni’s hand.

The first Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity hit the field, but a second D.D. Crow (!!!!!) foiled Schmidt’s plans and earned the Italian a huge cheer from the crowd! Schmidt was forced to pass!

Meroni now found Dark Hole and the noise drowned everything else that went on in the hall. Inzektor Dragonfly was Normal Summoned, Inzektor Hornet equipped it, a second later Schmidt was without a field and Meroni had Inzektor Centipede and Inzektor Dragonfly on the field with the former equipped with Inzektor Hornet. Meroni destroyed his own monster, so he could search his Deck for another Inzektor Dragonfly.

Meroni just started to come back, then Schmidt found Pot of Avarice!

Meroni just started to come back, then Schmidt found Pot of Avarice!

This wasn’t a one-sided match. Not at all. Since Schmidt just ripped Pot of Avarice!!! A Dark Hole followed, he then Normal Summoned Wind-Up Rabbit and it attacked directly.

Meroni Normal Summoned Inzektor Dragonfly, but Effect Veiler made sure it couldn’t start any shenanigans! Meroni passed!

Schmidt drew into Tour Guide From the Underworld! Now it was Meroni who had the Effect Veiler! My ears started hurting as the crowd went from one applause into the next, never stopping!

Schmidt attacked, then went on and Xyz Summoned in Main Phase 2. By now you know the drill. Since pictures say more than words, here you go:

Schmidt was unleashing a flurry of Xyz Summons!

Meroni lost Inzektor Dragonfly to Wind-Up Hunter's (it was brought back by Leviair the Sea Dragon) effect. Finally, Schmidt passed.

Meroni could only Set a Spell or Trap the following turn.

Schmidt went for it, not fearing Mirror Force. Meroni asked if it would be enough and well, let’s show you one more picture:

How much damage is that?

Joschua Schmidt advances to the Semi Finals!

Joschua Schmidt wasted no time, celebrating his most important victory of the day! He’s going to Worlds, he couldn’t believe it. His friends couldn’t believe it and they hugged him, already rooting for him although the tournament would be another month away!

Today’s event isn’t over yet, but Joschua Schmidt certainly savored the moment. Hopefully, he’ll be back in the Semis with all of his concentration.
