Quarter Finals: Joschua Schmidt (Wind-Up) vs. Luca Meroni (Inzektors)

[p]One more win! One more win! That’s all it takes to advance to the Semi Finals and, more importantly, to the World Championship! Among the 8 players that still have a shot at making it are Joschua Schmidt from Germany and Luca Meroni from Italy. I sat down next to them and watch them play. Who will represent Europe? We’ll know in just a bit!
[/p][p]
Schmidt rolled a 6 and Meroni couldn’t quite match it with a 2. So Schmidt opted to go first.
[/p][nbsp]

Joschua Schmidt seemed a little beaten up, but he was eager to get his game going!

[nbsp][p]
[tgu] got him [sangan] from his Deck and he used both monsters to Xyz Summon [w maity]. [sangan] was detached and [w hun] came out. [w maity] got Tributed, Meroni lost his [sangan], Schmidt then followed it up with [reborn] on [sangan], he [ss]ed another [w maity] and this time he added [w rat] to his side of the field. It brought back [w hun], which then Tributed [w maity] and that cost Meroni [i pede]
[/p][p]
The third time’s the charm as they say and this time Meroni lost [safe zone]. Schmidt was left with [w hun] and [w maity] on his side of the field, he Set 2 Spells or Traps and ended.
[/p][nbsp]
Schmidt wouldn't give Meroni an opening!

[nbsp][p]
[i pede] ended up in [bth]. [mst] from Schmidt destroy [tt] and Meroni had 1 more Set card.
[/p][p]
It got destroyed on Schmidt’s following turn as he found another [mst]. [call] got chained for [sangan], however, and this helped Meroni add [maxx] to his hand. Schmidt activated the effect of [w maity] and Meroni discarded [maxx] in response to draw a card. Attacks followed of [w hun], [w rabbit] and [w maity].
[/p][p]
Meroni Set a card to each zone.
[/p][p]
Schmidt [ns]ed [w mag] and he used [w rabbit]. He [ss]ed [w mag] from his Deck and used both Magicians to Xyz Summon [utopia]. He switched [w hun] to [def], attacked over [i fly] with [utopia] and [w maity] attacked directly. He Set a second Spell or Trap and ended.
[/p][nbsp]
Meroni tried to hang on with Call of the Haunted!

[nbsp][p]
Meroni activated [call] on his following turn, trying to bring back [i pede]. It attacked [w hun] and destroyed it. Meroni Set a Spell or Trap and ended.
[/p][p]
Schmidt now drew into [w fac]. He [ns]ed [w rabbit]. That meant that [w fac] would trigger and Schmidt searched his Deck for [w rat]. He used its effect to bring back [w hun] and both were then Tuned to [zenmaines]. He attacked with [zenmaines], Meroni used [safe zone], but Schmidt chained [ced] to remove its target! That meant that Meroni had no way of defending himself from the following attacks!
[/p][nbsp]

Joschua Schmidt ist just 1 win away from going to Worlds!

[nbsp][p]
In game one, Joschua Schmidt had all the right tools to throw a huge obstacle in his way right from the beginning.

[storm] followed the next turn. Then [w mag], [w shark], another [w mag] from the Deck, which got Schmidt [w hun] and he Tributed [w mag], discarding [crow] (!!!) from Meroni’s hand.[br]
The first [w maity] hit the field, but a second [crow] (!!!!!) foiled Schmidt’s plans and earned the Italian a huge cheer from the crowd! Schmidt was forced to pass!
[/p][p]
Meroni now found [hole] and the noise drowned everything else that went on in the hall. [i fly] was [ns]ed, [i hornet] equipped it, a second later Schmidt was without a field and Meroni had [i pede] and [i fly] on the field with the former equipped with [i hornet]. Meroni destroyed his own monster, so he could search his Deck for another [i fly].
[/p][nbsp]
Meroni just started to come back, then Schmidt found Pot of Avarice!

[nbsp][p]
This wasn’t a one-sided match. Not at all. Since Schmidt just ripped [poa]!!! A [hole] followed, he then [ns]ed [w rabbit] and it attacked directly.
[/p][p]
Meroni [ns]ed [i fly], but [veiler] made sure it couldn’t start any shenanigans! Meroni passed!
[/p][p]
Schmidt drew into [tgu]! Now it was Meroni who had the [veiler]! My ears started hurting as the crowd went from one applause into the next, never stopping![br]
Schmidt attacked, then went on and Xyz Summoned in [mp] 2. By now you know the drill. Since pictures say more than words, here you go:
[/p][nbsp]
Schmidt was unleashing a flurry of Xyz Summons!

[nbsp][p]
Meroni lost [i fly] to [w hun]'[s] (it was brought back by [leviair]) effect. Finally, Schmidt passed.
[/p][p]
Meroni could only Set a Spell or Trap the following turn.
[/p][p]
Schmidt went for it, not fearing [mf]. Meroni asked if it would be enough and well, let’s show you one more picture:

How much damage is that?
