Round 1: Rodrigo Togores (ESP) vs. Tommaso Gori (ITA)

16.07.2011 | 12:57 |

[p]
Let’s not break with our tradition of featuring the reigning champion in round 1 and take a look at the Plant Synchro Deck that Rodrigo Togores from Madrid brings to the table today! He’s facing Tommaso Gori from Florence, Italy, who’s relying on the Six Samurai. Will the home advantage help Togores to score a quick win in the first Match of the day or can Gori overcome the bad odds and start with a positive record?
[/p][p]
Togores won the die roll and opted to go first. Both players shared some stories from past tournaments to break the ice prior to the beginning of the round and then Togores drew for his turn!

[nbsp][p]
He activated [foolish], searching his deck for [dandy] and sending it to the Graveyard. This got him 2 tokens from the little Plant, one of which he Tributed for the effect of a newly [ns]ed [lfb] to Special Summon [spore] from his Deck. The little Plant was Tuned with the other Token to [fsynch], allowing Togores to draw a card. He Set 2 back row cards and ended his turn.
[/p][p]
Gori was on for the first time. He brought out [spirit] and wanted to proceed with the Battle Phase. However, Togores had something to say about that, as he activated the effect of [fsynch]! Gori Chained [bom] from his hand to turn [lfb] face-down! He then declared an attack with [spirit] into the face-down [lfb], taking 700 damage! Unfortunately, his nerves got the best of him and he completely forgot to check the DEF of the monster before sending his attacker into it. All he could do was Set 3 Spells or Traps and watch when Togores declared that he would Tune both of his monsters to [tghl].

[nbsp][p]
Togores Summoned [sangan] and attacked with both monsters directly. That marked the end of his turn.
[/p][p]
Gori only Set a monster and passed right back.
[/p][p]
[lfb] was next for Togores, bringing out [bulb]. He Tuned it with [sangan] to [arm], drawing a card off [tghl]'[s] effect. He then attacked with [tghl] over [kagemusha] and [arm] dealt 1800 with a direct attack!
[/p][p]
Play was back to Gori, who considered his options for a second before activating [double]. Togores Chained [maxx] from his hand, so he drew 1 card after [kagemusha] and [spirit] were Special Summoned to the field!

[nbsp][p]
Gori read over his cards carefully again and opted to activate [trunade] next. Togores responded, Chaining [enemy], Tributing [arm] to gain control over [kagemusha] until the end of the turn! Gori now had 4 cards in his hand, at least 2 of which were Spells or Traps. He Normal Summoned [kageki] next, equipped it with [spirit] and then attacked his own [spirit]. He Set 3 Spells or Traps and was done with his turn.
[/p][p]
Togores only had [tghl] on the field, but he had drawn into his 7th card! “So many options!”, he complained jokingly, then he [ns]ed [debris]. The attack wasn’t negated, so the effect of [debris] allowed Togores to return [dandy] to the field. He Tuned both of his monsters to [afd], drew a card off [tghl], got 2 Tokens from [dandy] and brought back [bulb]. He then wanted to use one of the Tokens, [bulb] and [afd] to [synch] [trishula], however, Gori flipped [warning]!
[/p][p]
That was met with a chuckle, as Togores had [poa] to draw another 2 cards. He remarked: “I got lucky” and went on to play 2 [mst]. Gori knew it was over and shuffled up his cards!

Rodrigo Togores wins the first Duel!

[nbsp][p]
Once [tghl] hit the field and Gori couldn’t come up with an immediate answer to the threat, the game took a huge swing in Togores’ favor, providing the reigning champion with enough options to win the Duel!
[/p][p]
Both players quickly checked their Side Decks for answers to their opponents key cards. For Gori, that certainly meant handling a number of Plants and [tghl]! Togores got ready to deal with [shi en] and changed some cards with his Side Deck.
[/p][nbsp]

Tommaso Gori now had to win 2 Duels to claim the Match!

[nbsp][p]
Gori opted to go first and did so with [kageki], allowing him to [ss] [kagemusha]. Togores Chained [maxx], so he could draw a card. Both monsters were Tuned to [shi en], which allowed Togores to draw another card! Quite an early advantage, however, he needed it as he had to look for answers to [shi en]. [df] hit the field and Gori Set a Spell or Trap. Then it was up to Togores.
[/p][p]
He activated [hole] first, which expectedly got negated by [shi en]. [trunade] was next, returning Gori’s back row to his hand. [puppet] was then discarded to gain control over [shi en], Togores then announced that he had to think and Gori could only laugh – after all it seemed like a textbook turn so far. [reborn] got Togores back [kagemusha], [debris] was [ns]ed next and brought back [maxx], Togores attacked directly with everything, dealing 4400 damage ([shi en]: 2500 ATK, [maxx]: 400 ATK, [debris]: 1000 ATK and [kagemusha]: 400 ATK), leaving Gori with only 3600 Life Points! [shi en], [maxx] and [kagemusha] were then Tuned to [trishula], removing [bom] from Gori’s hand and [kagemusha] from his Graveyard! Togores Set 2 Spells or Traps and passed for his turn with no cards left in his hand – it didn’t look like he needed them anyway!
[/p][nbsp]
Togores seemed happy he could add all his cards to his field!

[nbsp][p]
Gori found himself in a very desperate position, but he still held onto 4 cards in his hand. He wanted to test the waters first, activating [smoke]. Togores was fine with that, so Gori searched his Deck for [kagemusha] and added it to his hand. Next, he used [reborn] to bring back [shi en] – a move that Togores didn’t seem to like too much. Another [smoke] followed, this time netting Gori [kageki]. This allowed Gori to bring out [catastor]; after he [ns]ed [kageki], he [ss]ed [kagemusha] with its effect and then Tuned both to the Synchro Monster. With the following attacks, he destroyed both of Togores’ monsters! He activated [fissure] and passed for his turn!
[/p][p]
Togores wasn’t out of options, though. First, he activated [mind] on [shi en] which got negated. He then made a strong comeback with [tengu], activating [tt] after [ns]ing it! This got him another [tengu], while Gori lost both of his monsters! He attacked directly and passed for his turn. The game went back and forth!
[/p][nbsp]
Gori found an answer with Shien's Smoke Signal!

[nbsp][p]
Gori drew into his last [smoke], searching his deck for [kagemusha]. He commented on his next move with: “I’ll give it a try!”, Setting the monster.
[/p][p]
Togores only Set a Spell or Trap and play was right back to Gori – it looked like Gori’s gamble paid off!
[/p][p]
[hand] came down in Gori’s next turn. He flipped [kagemusha] face-up and didn’t opt to use the effect of [hand], so Togores activated [bom] to turn [hand] face-down! Gori was momentarily stunned and had to pass his turn.
[/p][p]
The following turn, Togores drew into [lfb]. He attacked with it over [kagemusha] and [tengu] destroyed the Set [hand]. In Main Phase 2, [lfb] was Tributed for its own effect to bring out [bulb], which was then Tuned to [tengu] for [tghl]. Togores searched his Deck for his last copy of [tengu] and was done with his turn.
[/p][p]
Gori only Set a Spell or Trap.
[/p][nbsp]
Togores wouldn't risk attacking into Mirror Force so close to winning the Duel!

[nbsp][p]
Togores switched [tghl] to Defense Position and attacked directly with [tengu]. He Set a Spell or Trap and ended his turn. Gori only had 100 Life Points left!
[/p][p]
Gori drew for his turn and Set another Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
When Togores declared another attack with [tengu] the following turn, Gori extended his hand!
[/p][nbsp]

Rodrigo Togores wins the first Match of the day!

[nbsp][p]
A great start for the reigning champion! It seems like he knows all the tricks his Plant Synchro Deck provides him with, but he promised us we haven’t seen everything so far. Let’s see how this will turn out and if he can make day 2!
