Round 10 Feature Match: Merlin Schumacher vs. Luke Lennard

We’ve made it to the final round of Swiss and we picked two players that can still claim a spot in the knock out portion of the main event: Merlin Schumacher and Luke Lennard. Both got 21 points which means they got a 7 – 2 record and they need a win to advance to the next round.

Schumacher relies on a Infernity Deck and Lennard runs X-Sabers. Lennard won the die roll and opted to go first.

He kicked things off with [duality], revealing [bom], [emmersblade] and [veiler]. He had to think for a second before picking [veiler], Summoned [fulhelm], Set 2 Spell or Trap Cards and passed.

Schumacher Summoned [arma] and it got him [archfiend]. He attacked, but [fulhelm]'[s] effect was used to stop the attack. 2 spells or traps went face-down and play was back to Lennard.

He used [rota] to search his Deck for [pashuul] first and brought out [boggart]. Its effect allowed him to Special Summon [pashuul]. He followed it up with [faultroll], Tuned [faultroll] and [pashuul] to [stardust] and proceeded with his Battle Phase. [boggart] attacked over [arma], [fulhelm] followed and [stardust] was sent in last. Lennard passed.

[infinf] was used, 2 Infernities were discarded and another copy of the trap along with [archfiend] were sent from Schumacher’s Deck to his Graveyard. [necromancer] was Summoned, but Lennard used [veiler] immediately to turn it into a pretty useless card. Once the effect of [veiler] resolved, he used [bom] to turn it face-down. Schumacher used [call] to bring back [archfiend], but another [veiler] made sure Schumacher wouldn’t be able to search his Deck.

In Lennard’s turn, he attacked over both of Schumacher’s monsters and passed.

Schumacher only Set a second spell or trap and was done with his turn.

Lennard declared his attacks and Schumacher shuffled up his cards.

Luke Lennard takes the first Duel by storm!

[nbsp]

That Duel went by fast. One huge turn by Lennard was enough to gain a lead, which was followed up by 2 [veiler]'[s], shutting down Schumacher’s answers!

Schumacher wanted to start the second Duel and he did by activating [duality], revealing [sj], [avenger] and [infbreak]. He picked the counter trap, Set a monster and 2 spells or traps and passed.

Lennard Summoned [fulhelm], Set a spell or trap and ended.

4 cards in Schumacher’s hand and he wanted to get rid of some more. He Set a spell or trap, used [foolish] to send [patrol] from his Deck to his Graveyard, Special Summoned [necromancer], used the effect of [patrol] to Special Summon [archfiend] and activated the effect to add another copy of [archfiend] to his hand. Lennard wanted to use [bth] now, but Schumacher claimed that he added the card to his hand on resolution (Lennard claimed he did not want to respond earlier), so there was no chance to activate [bth] at that point. [plague] was flipped and Tuned with [archfiend] to [goyo]. Now it was time for [bth]! Schumacher brought back [plague], used the effect of [necromancer] to bring back [archfiend] and Tuned [plague] and [necromancer] to [catastor]. [catastor] was sent in [fulhelm] (which was stopped) and an attack with [archfiend] followed, dealing 500 damage.

Lennard simply Set a card to each zone.

Schumacher Set a spell or trap and proceeded with his Battle Phase. [catastor] attacked and destroyed [darksoul], [archfiend] followed and dealt some Damage. [fulhelm] was searched for the effect of [darksoul].

[cold wave] was Lennard’s opening move in the following turn. [barrier] was supposed to negate it, but [sj] from Lennard was Chained. A [sj] from Schumacher made sure the effect would get negated after all. [reborn] brought back [darksoul], [fulhelm] was Normal Summoned, [faultroll] was Special Summoned, but Schumacher flipped [warning]. [fulhelm] and [darksoul] were Tuned to [brionac] and Lennard ditched his last card to return Schumacher’s [catastor] to his Synchro Deck. At least that was what Lennard had in mind, but Schumacher revealed a second [barrier] to destroy [brionac] and negate the effect. That meant game for the German!

[nbsp]

Merlin Schumacher equals the score!

[nbsp]

Schumacher’s Infernity engine was on full speed in the last Duel. Once he got rid of the cards in his hand, he could negate all of Lennard’s important cards and claim the win [dash] despite Lennard playing powerful cards like [reborn] and [faultroll]!

Lennard Set a card to each zone and passed.

Schumacher thought for a moment before Setting 2 Spell or Trap Cards and passing.

[boggart] came down on Lennard’s side on the field and he used the effect to Special Summon [pashuul]. Next in line was [faultroll]; [boggart] and [pashuul] were Tuned to [hyunlei] and Schumacher Chained [infinf] to discard 2 of his cards in his hand. However, Lennard wasn’t done just yet. As Schumacher didn’t have any more protection, he Special Summoned a second [faultroll], activated the effects of the [faultroll]'[s] to bring back some of his X-Sabers, but Schumacher already extended his hand. He knew it was over.

Luke Lennard advances to the Top 32!

[nbsp]

A strong finish by Luke Lennard, who used all of the tools his X-Saber Deck provided to Special Summon a number of Synchro Monsters and then following it up by a flurry of attacks!

X-Sabers on the march!

Schumacher wished his opponent good luck for the Top 32 and Lennard started to look for his friends and share the good news.
