Round 10: Katrin Gehre (Dark World) vs. Denis Scorcioni (Wind-Up)

26.02.2012 | 11:25 |

[p]We’re in the second to last round in the Swiss Part of the tournament and as promised in my Report from the Top Tables, we invited Katrin Gehre to our Feature Match table. She’s piloting Dark World through a field of Dino Rabbits, Inzektors and Wind-Ups. Speaking of which, her opponent Denis Scorcioni also makes use of the popular archetype.

[nbsp][p]
[foolish] sent [grapha] to Gehre’s Graveyard, she activated [gates], Set a Spell or Trap and then activated [card destruction]. [maxx] was chained, but Gehre didn’t discard a single Dark World Monster!
[/p][nbsp]
Gehre had plenty of options to choose from

[nbsp][p]
[dragged] followed and Gehre saw [sj], [poa], [w mag] and [mind]. Gehre lost her last card in her hand, another copy of [dragged], drew another card, then Set a second Spell or Trap and passed, all out of cards.
[/p][p]
Scorcioni only Set a Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Finally Gehre found a monter: [broww]. She [ns]ed it to the field and Scorcioni considered his response. Shaking his head, he flipped [sj]!
[/p][p]
On his following turn, he activated [w fac] and then [ns]ed [w rabbit]. Gehre was quick to activate [sd], which was probably not the best move as Scorcioni simply chained the effect of [w rabbit]. If Gehre would have waited until Scorcioni would have declared that he was activating the effect, she could have negated it. Scorcioni searched for [w shark], he Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][p]
[gates] was used, banishing [broww]. Gehre discarded a copy of [snoww], drew a card and then searched her Deck for a copy of [grapha]. After checking Scorcioni’s Graveyard briefly, she activated [smog], banishing [w rabbit]! She discarded [grapha], destroyed the Set Spell or Trap: [mind], then brought back [grapha] from the dead after [ns]ing [snoww] and he attacked directly, leaving Scorcioni with only 1000 Life Points!
[/p][nbsp]
Finally Grapha made an appearance!

[nbsp][p]
There were few outs in Scorcioni’s Deck and he knew it. [w rabbit]'[s] effect was activated although [sd] would negate it. Scorcioni’s motivation became clear when he added a counter to [w fac] and removed it right away again to search his Deck for [w mag]. Gehre tried to see through Scorcioni’s plan, but didn’t bother as her [skill drain] would negate the effects of his monsters anyway (as she indicated).[br]
[w mag] was [ns]ed and [w shark] followed. Both were then used to Xyz Summon [utopia]. The Xyz Monster took a direct shot at Gehre, Scorcioni Set his 2 remaining cards in his back row and he passed.
[/p][p]
[gates] was used once more, banishing a [snoww] in Gehre’s Graveyard and discarding another copy. She drew, then searched for [sillva]. [smog]'[s] effect was used and [sillva] was discarded, which meant it would [ss] itself back to the field. [sillva] declared an attack, but Scorcioni used [bom] to flip it face-down.[br]
Gehre then used [reborn] and brought back [snoww]. She returned it to her hand, returning [grapha] back to the field. A [ns] of [snoww] followed, which allowed Gehre to once again [ss] [grapha]. As Scorcioni couldn’t find anything in his back row to protect himself, that meant game for Gehre!
[/p][nbsp]

Katrin Gehre gains an early lead!

[nbsp][p]
Gehre didn’t seem overly familiar with the way the Wind-Up Deck was working and she checked with a judge if the [ss]ing effects of the theme’s monsters were making use of the chain.
[/p][nbsp]

The time for pleasantries were over as Scorcioni wanted to start his comeback!

[nbsp][p]
[w fac] was activated, [w mag] was [ns]ed and then [w shark] was [ss]ed from Scorcioni’s hand. [w hun] was [ss]ed from Scorcioni’s Deck, he then Tributed [w mag] which caused Gehre to lose [mst] from her hand. The remaining 2 monsters performed an Xyz Summon into [w maity], which used its effect to special [w rat], which brought back [w hun] and you probably know how this loop plays out…[br]
In the end, Gehre was left with only 1 card in her hand while Scorcioni had [w maity] with 2 materials on the field as well as 2 face-down Spell and Traps.
[/p][p]
Gehre drew into [gates] and activated the effect. She banished [broww], but [mst] was chained to destroy the Field Spell and also negate its effect. Once again, Gehre was down on 1 card in her hand.
[/p][nbsp]
Scorcioni [ns]ed [tour guide], which allowed him to [ss] [sangan] from his Deck. He switched [w maity] to [atk], then declared attacks. That leaft Gehre with 5400 Life Points. He Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][p]
Gehre found [dragged] and that caused Scorcioni to lose [w shark] while Gehre discarded and [ss]ed [beiige]. She attacked over [tour guide] and passed.
[/p][p]
Scorcioni checked his 2 face-down back row cards, then activated [reborn]. This got him [w rat] from his Graveyard. He used its effect to [ss] [w shark] back to his field, this triggered [w fac] and he then searched his Deck for [w rabbit]. [w rabbit] was also invited to the party, he then Xyz Summoned [17] with [w shark] and [w rat], then detached one of the materials and attacked over [beiige]. This cleared the way for game ending attacks from his remaining monsters.
[/p][nbsp]

Denis Scorcioni makes a furious comeback!

[nbsp][p]Few cards were exchanged between Main and Side Deck this time and Gehre couldn’t wait to go first again!
[/p][nbsp]

[nbsp][p]
She Set 2 Spells or Traps, [ns]ed [beiige] and then activated [dragged]. She saw [mst], [storm], [gorz], [dust] and [bom]. She picked [gorz] and had Scorcioni decide whether [sillva] or [snoww] should be sent to her Graveyard. [sillva] it was and he returned to Gehre’s side of the field! She now knew that [storm] was waiting to wipe her back row, so she didn’t commit to any Setting any more cards on the field.
[/p][p]
[storm] followed the next turn and Gehre chained [smog], trying to banish [gorz]. [mst] was chained from Scorcioni’s hand, basically negating the trap. [tour guide] was [ns]ed and Gehre could only laugh while shaking her head in disbelief at the same time. That certainly was one of the best cards Scorcioni could have drawn into![br]
He [ss]ed [sangan] and used both of his monsters to Xyz Summon [zenmaines]. He Set 2 Spells or Traps and passed for his turn.

[nbsp][p]
Play was back to Gehre who briefly checked her Extra Deck first. [raven] was [ns]ed and she discarded 2 – [snoww] and [broww]! Gehre drew and started searching her Deck. [gates] were picked and Gehre went for a Synchro Summon. [beiige] and [raven] were Tuned to [scrap dragon]. [sillva] attacked and that caused [zenmaines] to lose one of his attachments. An attack with [scrap dragon] followed, but [bom] flipped the Synchro Monster face-down. During the End Phase, [zenmaines] destroyed [scrap dragon].
[/p][p]
[w rabbit] was [ns]ed the following turn and Scorcioni Set a Spell or Trap. That concluded his turn.
[/p][p]
[rai oh] attacked into [w rabbit]. Its effect was used, then [sillva] attacked into [zenmaines]. Another material was detached. Gehre Set a Spell or Trap. During the End Phase, [sillva] was destroyed.
[/p][p]
Back to Scorcioni who got [w rabbit] back. He then [ns]ed [tour guide] and searched his Deck for the last copy. Both were used to Xyz Summon [w maity]. One of the materials was detached and Scorcioni [ss]ed [w hun]. He Tributed [zenmaines], causing Gehre to lose the last card in her hand: [gates]. [w hun] and [w rabbit] were then used to Xyz Summon [leviair]. Gehre thought about using [rai oh]'[s] effect, but opted against it. [dust] was then used on her face-down Spell or Trap: [mf]! This cleared the way for [17] to attack over [rai oh] and Scorcioni passed.

[nbsp][p]
Gehre Set a Spell or Trap and play was back to Scorcioni.
[/p][p]
He [ns]ed [w rabbit] and attacked with it. [w maity] followed and then an attack with [17], but Gehre used [bom] to defend her Life Points.
[/p][p]
All she could muster up on her following turn was another Set Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Scorcioni [fs]ed [17]. He summoned [w shark] from his hand, still not in fear of [tt]. [w shark] and [w rabbit] were used to Xyz Summon [zenmaines]. Attacks followed and that was enough to seal the deal!
[/p][nbsp]

Denis Scorcioni recovers from his early loss and turns the match around!

[nbsp][p]
The crucial play in the last game proved to be Gehre’s Synchro Summon. If she would have opted to go for [sdd] instead of [scrap dragon], there would have been little that Scorcioni could have done and it would have given her a great way to get rid of [zenmaines]. As it turned out, [zenmaines] bought Scorcioni several turns in which he could draw into the cards he needed to come back standing on the brink of defeat!
