Round 10: Valerio Rozza (Dragon Ruler) vs Ricki Madsen (Spellbook)

Denmark’s Ricki Madsen is here this weekend with his Spellbook Deck. He’s taking on Valerio Rozza – one of Europe’s World Championship competitors who finished in the top four at the [wcq] in Frankfurt. Both of these Duelists are on the bubble so the loser here would be making their way to the Public Events for the rest of the day! Welcome to Round 10.

Madsen won the roll and started things off. [sb secrets] was first and searched [sb tower]. [pr temp] was [ns]ed and [sb master] was activated to copy Secrets, and fished out a [sb wisdom] from the Deck. Temperance used it’s effect to [ss] [sb world] in attack position and it’s effect returned both Secrets and Master to the hand. Tower was activated and the Dane set a backrow before passing.

Rozza used [blaster]’s effect, dicsarding [trigon], to destroy a chained Wisdom. He activated [ravine] knocking off the Tower, and used it to pitch Blaster and send [redox]. The Earth Dragon was revived by Banished both and [tdrag] searched [debris] which was Summoned. It got Trigon and turned into [afd], destroying Ravine and giving Rozza 1000 LP. He fetched another Ravine and then used both his Monsters to [xyz] [11]! It stole World which attacked for 2900. A huge momentum swing! The Italian set two cards before passing.

Madsen searched a [sb wisdom] with [sb secrets] and then revealed three Spellbook cards in hand to [ss] [hpop]. [sb master] was next and copied Secrets to find a [sb power]. He confirmed that the Italian had one card left in his hand before activating Power on the Priestess. She went up to 3500 and attacked Big Eye to leave Rozza on 8100. Power’s second effect allowed the search of [sb fate] and Priestess Banished Secrets from the Graveyard to destroy World, before [sb eternity] grabbed it back. Madsen hadn’t used his [ns] so added [kycoo] to the mix before setting three.

In the End Phase Rozza flipped [6s] and called five and six – unlucky as a four was rolled! He lost some cards including a Tempest and it was his move.

Ravine was activated and the cost was paid, but [sb fate] Banished it before it could resolve. Rozza flipped [return]! He went to 4050 and [ss]ed Blaster and Tempest in attack. They attacked… straight into [mf]! Rozza had no cards left and staring down his opponent’s field knew he had no options. We were heading to game two!

Rozza started us off for the second game by [ss]ing Redox in defence, Banishing Blaster and Tempest which both self-replaced. [corseca] was Summoned and [scrap dragon] hit the field. A backrow was all as he passed.

It was flipped in Madsen’s draw phase: [dna]! Dragons were the call (shockingly) and [sb cres] was first. [sb secrets] followed searching out [sb power] and [breaker] was [ns]ed! The counter destroyed Surgery, then Power boosted Breaker. Master copied Power to make him 3600 and Scrap Dragon fell in battle, meaning Madsen could search twice – [sb tower] and [sb eternity] were added to hand and Madsen activated [stumbling]! He played Tower and set a card before passing.

Rozza drew to four in hand and looked at his options. He discarded Blaster and [f guard] to destroy the set card, a chained [sb fate] which turned Breaker face-down. Redox was revived by banishing Corsesca and [tdrag], which replaced itself. [tidal] was next and the two cards combined to [xyz] [11]. It stole the set Breaker which was flipped and switched to [def] thanks to Stumbling.

[sb eternity] added Secrets which was played to add [sb mag] – Summoned to search Master. It copied Secrets and Fate was added to the hand. It was activated, Banishing three Spellbooks to remove Big Eye from the equation. Madsen set [debunk] before passing with one card in hand.

Breaker went to attack for the Italian and attacked over the Magician. In [mp2] he attempted to revive Redox by Banishing Blaster and Tidal, but Debunk stopped it. Fire and Water replaced themselves in Rozza’s hand and he set a [st] before ending his turn.

In the Draw Phase, he flipped [pwwb] to turn [sb tower] to the top of the Deck!

Madsen played Eternity to get Secrets which got Magician. It was [ns]ed and got Tower, a [st] was Set and play was back to the Italian.

Breaker attacked over Magician and in [mp2] Blaster was [ss]ed by Banishing Tidal and Tempest, which fished out a [debris]. It was [ns]ed and together with Blaster [synch]ed [star eater]! A [st] was set – revealed to be [vane] by an [mst] in the End Phase.

Madsen drew and used the effect of Tower. His two cards in hand were now Magician and Secrets – not bad! He Summoned the Magician and searched Fate. It was set and the Dane ended his turn.

Star Eater went to attack position and Madsen read it to make sure he knew when to play his card. As Rozza entered the Battle Phase Fate Banished three Spellbooks to ensure it couldn’t attack and Breaker finished off the Magician. In [mp2] Ravine was played over Tower and Tidal was discarded to send Redox to the Graveyard. He passed.

Madsen only had Stumbling on the field and Secrets in hand. He drew a [bom] and set it.

Breaker poked him for 1600 and Rozza set a card. Madsen drew Kycoo and activated [sb secrets]. It searched [sb wisdom] and he Summoned the [kycoo], activating Wisdom before it went to defence. Breaker went down in battle and the Dane passed. Rozza passed back.

Kycoo went in for 1800 and Rozza set a backrow.

Kycoo took another 1800 and the Spellbook player set [mf], destroyed in the End Phase by [mst]. The Italian set another and ate 1800 from Kycoo, dropping to 1600. Madsen set a card.

In the End Phase, Rozza thought about flipping a card before doing so – [pwwb]. It put Kycoo on top of the Deck meaning after he drew the Italian could start Banishing cards again. He [ss]ed Blaster and Redox replaced itself. [7ss] netted him two cards – one of which was [terraforming], used to get a Ravine. Rozza set a [st].

Madsen Summoned Kycoo, which went to defence, and ended. Blaster returned to the hand.

Rozza simply passed. Kycoo went to attack and was blocked by [pwwb] sending it to the top of the Deck.

[mp2] saw [sb life] come down, countered by an [mst] – Rozza’s last set card.

He set a new one on his turn, spun by Wing Blast. Madsen Summoned Kycoo and passed, and Rozza set the card he drew. It was revealed as an [mst] by a Typhoon from the Dane and nothing was left to stop Kycoo punching through the Italian’s final LP!

A really great match between two very skilled players that ended in the Dane stumbling across the line to victory.

[h2]Ricki Madsen continues with hopes of winning the next round and progressing to the top 32![/h2]
