Round 11: Alain Ly (Evilswarm) vs. Jaka Fortunat (Evilswarm)

30.06.2013 | 13:40 |

We just saw Alain Ly in our Round 10 Mass Feature, going up against another Evilswarm player. His last opponent in the Swiss rounds is the Slovenian Duelist Jaka Fortunat, who coincidentally also plays Evilswarms.

I know that some of you think that mirror matches are boring, but let me tell you that this is another match you should definitely check out! You don’t see a 30 minute thriller between Evilswarms that often.

Jaka Fortunat came all the way from Slovenia!

[nbsp]
Fortunat won the die roll and he started with 2 face-down back row cards – something we haven’t seen too often this weekend.

Ly found [rabbit], but Fortunat had [veiler] to make sure it wouldn’t leave the field. He attacked with it, also added 2 back row cards and play was back to Fortunat.

[nbsp]
Fortunat activated [rota], adding [ev castor] to his hand. “So it’s a mirror”, Ly must have thought. [ev castor] was supposed to hit the field, but [warning] negated the attempt. [reborn] then brought it back, [ev castor] attacked [rabbit] and Ly activated [ced]. Fortunat had the [i pand] in his hand to make sure the attack would go through, he Set all the remaining cards in his hand, making it 3 in his back row and that concluded the turn.

Ly brought back [rabbit], courtesy of [reborn]. He then [ss]ed 2 copies of [ev helio] and fortunately for him, Fortunat had no response. Both monsters were then used to [xyz] [ophion], but Fortunat had a [ced] to deal with it.
Ly then went on and he [ns]ed [ev castor], he followed it up with his last [ev helio] and he declared an attack with the latter on Fortunat’s [ev castor]. The attack concluded successfully, which meant Fortunat was left with 7500 Life Points and after [ev castor] followed, it was 5750.

[nbsp]
Fortunat drew into [rabbit] and Ly discarded [maxx]. After both copies of [ev helio] attacked, Fortunat went for [cowboy], but Ly had [veiler]!

The following turn, Ly drew into [hole]! What a series of draws for the French Duelist!

Fortunat added a second Spell or Trap Card and he passed.

Play was back to Ly who found [ev mand] to deal some damage.

Fortunat only added another back row card.

Another attack with [ev mand]; 2650 Life Points remaining for Fortunat.

Ly was slowly recovering and gaining ground!

[nbsp]
A fourth back row card for Fortunat. Ly drew and he checked his Graveyard before declaring another attack. [fiendish] stopped [ev mand], however.

[ev castor] came down; finally, Fortunat had a monster. He attacked, but [safe zone] made sure Ly’s monster would stay on the field. This gave Fortunat something to think about, but he didn’t respond. 450 Life Points remaining for Ly!

Ly had [ev lant], but this time it was Fortunat who had [safe zone]. This game suddenly turned into a stalemate.

[nbsp]
Ly then found [ev castor] and he attacked over [maxx]. That concluded the turn.

When Ly used his [ev castor] to attempt and trade, an [i infect] made sure Ly wouldn’t simply lose his monster. He added [ev kery] to his hand. Fortunat had to pass after that.

Ly tried to add [ev kery] to his field, but a [warning] made sure it wouldn’t come down. 650 Life Points for Fortunat – both players were on the brink of defeat now. Back to Fortunat.

The Slovenian Duelist Set a card to each zone.

Ly passed and Fortunat simply added another back row card.

Fortunat then only switched [ev castor] to [def] and nothing happened on the following 5 turns. Ly was now up on 6 cards in hand. “Next turn, I’ll just discard a card!”, he announced.

Fortunat passed and the players started to suggest to each other adding cards like Ookazi to their respective Decks for these situations. Seemed like sound advice to me.
Ly then used [i infect] to add [ev kery] to his hand. He gave it another try and attempted to [ns] it. This time, it stuck. Ly then tried to activate its effect, but [veiler] made sure he wouldn’t get to add anything to his hand. An attack on another Set [maxx] followed and that concluded the turn.

[nbsp]
Fortunat summoned [ev mand]. Ly had no response. Both monsters were then used to [xyz] [ddw] and Ly let out a sound of surprise. It attacked Ly’s [atk] monster, but [i infect] saved it and basically returned it to Ly’s hand. When Fortunat tried to activate the effect of [ddw] in [mp] 2, a [veiler] from Ly’s hand attempted to foil that plan. Fortunat chained [ced] on his own monster. Ly chained [i pand], so he lost [safe zone], but not [ev mand]. For what it was worth, the field was a little easier to read again.[br]
Fortunat was obviously unhappy with the way this Duel developed. He added a back row card and ended.
[nbsp]
Ly was back in the game with a full hand!

[nbsp]
Ly switched [ev mand] to [atk] and he wanted to attack, but he totally forgot about his opponent’s [fiendish]. He [ns]ed [ev kery] in [mp] 2 instead and Fortunat had to think about his response. He had none, so Ly got to add [ev helio] to his hand. He summoned it and then performed an [xyz]. [cowboy] hit the field, but a [fiendish] stopped it dead in its tracks! Or so it tried to, since Ly found a [bom] among the cards in his hand to make sure this epic Duel would finally conclude!

Alain Ly takes the first Duel!

[nbsp]
Finally I managed to not invite a Spellbook player over to the Feature Match table and then the players still need almost 30 minutes to conclude the first Duel. Let’s see if we’ll be able to decide on a winner a little faster in the games to follow!

[nbsp]
“I really thought I’d lose this one!”, Ly admitted. Luckily for him, Fortunat didn’t draw into a monster after his [veiler] into [hole] draws; otherwise, Ly would have lost this game for certain.

Once again, it was Fortunat to kick things off. This time, he only Set 1 back row card.

Ly had [ev helio] and he attacked with it, making it 6050 for Fortunat. He added 2 back row cards and passed.

[ev mand] got [ss]ed to the field. [ev helio] followed and Fortunat went for [ophion]. Ly flipped a very costly [sj]!

Play was back to the French Duelist a moment after and he now [ns]ed [rabbit]. [veiler] came down in response. Attacks were next, making it 3800 Life Points for Fortunat. Ly added a second back row card before passing.

Fortunat [ns]ed another [ev helio]. It attacked [rabbit] and Ly commented “poor thing”, sending his monster to the Graveyard. Fortunat added a second back row card and that’s when Ly flipped [i infect], [ev castor] to his hand.

On his next turn, Ly [ns]ed [ev castor] and when Fortunat had no response, Ly opted to [xyz] [ophion]. [warning] made sure it never hit the field, but Ly wasn’t out of options yet. He dropped [ev kery], banished [ophion] from his Graveyard and this got him [ev helio]. He summoned it to the field as well and he attacked into his opponent’s copy. Both monsters bit the duest and [ev kery] took a direct shot at Fortunat’s Life Points.

[nbsp]
Fortunat summoned [ev kery], but Ly activated [ced]! Fortunat chained [i pand], however, making sure his monster stayed where it was. [ev helio] followed suit and that’s when time was called. Fortunat activated [reborn], returning another [ev helio] to the field. He attacked with it in [ev kery] and Ly flipped [safe zone]! This meant he would keep his monster, but drop down to 1650 Life Points. Fortunat was on 200 Life Points. “Not that card…”, Fortunat complained.
[nbsp]
Would Safe Zone safe the day for Ly?!

Would Safe Zone safe the day for Ly?!

[nbsp]
“500 too much”, Fortunat complained. He went for [ev oro] and opted to activate the first effect, returning [safe zone] to Ly’s hand. The French Duelist chained the effect of [i infect] to make sure he wouldn’t lose a card!

On his following turn, he summoned [ev kery]. This got him [ev castor] which he also added to his field. He then used both monsters to [xyz] [cowboy] in [def] and he activatd the effect, to which Fortunat chained [fiendish]. Ly Set a Spell or Trap, which was probably [safe zone] and he ended.

[ev oro] was supposed to make Ly discard, but he chained [i infect]. When he realized that there was no targeting involved, he announced: “So my combo doesn’t really work…”[br]
Fortunat’s last card in hand was [ev castor] and he summoned it to the field. He attacked with [ev oro] over [cowboy] and [ev castor] tied the score!
[nbsp]

Jaka Fortunat and Alain Ly’s match ends in a draw!

[nbsp]
Wow, what a thriller. If these Duelists get lucky, we’ll see both of them in the knock out portion of the tournament. There’s also the chance, however, of none of them advancing. Just wait for the final standings to arrive, you’ll find them on our coverage page first!
