Round 11 Mega Feature

23.02.2014 | 13:53 |
Once again it's the "last round", this time referring to the Swiss portion of the event. So why not do another Mega Feature?!

Alpay Engin has finally caught up with Anthony Tutu!

Alpay Engin has finally caught up with Anthony Tutu!

Facing each other on table 1 are the Germans Anthony Tutu and Alpay Engin. While Anthony has been among the leaders of the field for quite a while now, Alpay had been paired up, which might indicate that Anthony has a slight advantage. Both players are relying on the Mermail archetype.

Another mirror match, this time on table 3!

Another mirror match, this time on table 3!

Another mirror can be found on table 3, this time involving Marcel Burri and Mattia Graziuso, however, both are playing Fire Fist rather than Mermails. Sitting right next to them, Luigi Alici and Oliver König are waiting for the judges to return their Decks since they're receiving a check.
Table 4 features Carl Manigat's Hieratic Dragons as well as Merlin Schumacher's Fire Kings. This is probably going to be interesting, so I'll try to keep a close eye on this match.

Kimonas Tsitsiridis is still going strong with his Inzektors!

Kimonas Tsitsiridis is still going strong with his Inzektors!

Kimonas Tsitsiridis has already locked his position in the Top 32, but he still wants to win another match. His Inzektor Deck is currently picking apart the field of Max Hanuschik who is playing Infernities. This might mean that he can back from out of nowhere, so the Greek champion shouldn't feel too confident.

You've seen Johannes Kobelt's Deck, now it's time to watch him play!

You've seen Johannes Kobelt's Deck, now it's time to watch him play!

Johannes Kobelt just took a lot of damage from Baran Tekin's Fire Fist Deck. His unique approach featuring 3 different archetypes will hopefully provide him with the tools to fight back, but he definitely needs a little more protection against Baran's impressive field!

Roman Kieser who we saw yesterday is still in competition, going up against Eric Fehr this round!

Roman Kieser who we saw yesterday is still in competition, going up against Eric Fehr this round!

On table 8, we can find Roman Kieser, one of the most successful Spellbook Duelists this weekend. He's currently facing Eric Fehr who is also running Fire Fist.

Back to table 1 where Alpay had won the first game against Anthony!

Back to table 1 where Alpay had won the first game against Anthony!

Anthony Tutu and Alpay Engin are in between games, exchanging some pleasantries. Alpay just won the first Duel, so he might end up with the same record as Anthony, but the latter still has a word to say about that...

Alpay Engin takes the lead!

Marcel Burri was in the perfect position to wrap things up here!

Marcel Burri was in the perfect position to wrap things up here!

Marcel Burri has just found a Forbidden Lance to make sure the effect of his Coach Soldier Wolfbark would resolve successfully. Much to the dismay of Mattia Graziuso who is now forced to watch his opponent Special Summoning a bunch of monsters all in one turn! I turned around to write this up and when I looked back at the table, Mattia already shuffled up.

Marcel Burri claims the lead!

Table 6 was getting ready for the second game!

Table 6 was getting ready for the second game!

Baran Tekin's army of Fire Fist monsters were a little bit too much for Johannes Kobelt's Chain Burn Anti Meta Fire Fist Deck, but now Johannes can introduce some cards from his Side Deck. He's not looking too happy, but then again, he has come back from similar situations before this weekend.

Baran Tekin is leading 1 - 0!

Merlin and Carl are tied 1 - 1!

Merlin and Carl were in between games and I checked with them real quick. I was surprised to learn that they were already starting their third Duel - so much for the "I'll keep a close eye on them." With 24 minutes remaining on the clock, they are certainly among the fastest Duelists in the venue!

Alpay was well on his way and about to win the Duel!

Alpay was well on his way and about to win the Duel!

It seemed like Alpay was in great shape in the second game against Anthony; he just added a Abyss Dweller to his side of the field and Anthony was now left with very few outs. Anthony could only set a monster and when Alpay declared attacks the following turn after activating Abyss Dweller, Anthony extended the hand.

Alpay Engin wins 2 - 0!

Mattia Graziuso was throwing Fire Fist Monsters at Marcel Burri!

Mattia Graziuso was throwing Fire Fist Monsters at Marcel Burri!

Marcel Burri was staring down a couple of Fire Fist monsters that Mattia Graziuso was throwing at him. He tried to come back with Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Tiger King, which seemed to be working.

Things were going much better for Johannes Kobelt in this game!

Things were going much better for Johannes Kobelt in this game!

This time it was Johannes Kobelt gaining the upper hand against Baran Tekin. The Fire Fist Duelist was left with just 3 cards in hand while Johannes had 6 on the field and yet another attack of his Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear connected. That was certainly looking good for the unlikely mix of archetypes.

Carl Manigat went all in against Merlin!

Carl Manigat went all in against Merlin!

Carl Manigat was now throwing everything on the table and Merlin Schumacher was scouring his back row, looking for an answer. The big question on Carl's mind was whether to go "all in" or not; an incorrect read could cost him the game here. He played it safe, Special Summoning Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack in Defense Position. He then cleared Merlin's back row and attacked, dealing TONS OF DAMAGE!

Marcel Burri just finished his match, smiling proudly!

Marcel Burri just finished his match, smiling proudly!

Marcel Burri has done it, beating Mattia Graziuso! It seems to be a good day for Switzerland!

Marcel Burri wins!

Johannes Kobelt forced his match into a third game!

Johannes Kobelt forced his match into a third game!

My earlier read turned out to be correct; Johannes Kobelt has sent the match to a deciding Duel and both him and Baran Tekin were getting ready.

Carl Manigat overcomes Merlin Schumacher!

Carl Manigat is now getting ready for his Top 32 Feature Match!

Carl Manigat is now getting ready for his Top 32 Feature Match!

Our American readers will be pleased to hear that the invader they sent over this time is well on his way of taking down the YCS. Merlin couldn't come back and had to shuffle up his cards, but we'll also see him again in the Top 32!

The Inzektors were unleashing one of their combos again!

The Inzektors were unleashing one of their combos again!

Once again, Kimonas Tsitsiridis attempted to unleash the combos of his Inzektors, but this time Max Hanuschik had a great answer: Infernity Barrier! The following turn, he set a monster, he switched Evilswarm Exciton Knight to Defense Position, attacked with Infernity Archfiend and passed play. Inzektor Hornet was supposed to enter play, but Solemn Warning made sure that never happened, so Kimonas was forced to end. Another attack from Max' Infernity Archfiend, nothing happened the following 2 turns and so he took another shot; less than 3000 Life Points remaining for Kimonas. He found a Inzektor Ladybug and Summoned it to the field. It attacked a set D.D. Crow on Max' side of the field.

Would we get to see Inzektors in the Top 32?

Would we get to see Inzektors in the Top 32?

The German Flip Summoned Armageddon Knight and he followed it up with Infernity Break. Kimonas Chained Forbidden Lance on Inzektor Ladybug and he Chained Twister to destroy Inzektor Giga-Mantis. This brought back another Inzektor Ladybug in face-up Defense Position; attacks followed and Kimonas was left with only 800 Life Points. "Cowboy?", he asked and Max nodded.

Max Hanuschick is victorious!

The last match that was still underway!

The last match that was still underway!

The match between Johannes Kobelt and Baran Tekin was entering its most crucial stage. It was Baran's turn and he Summoned Fire King High Avatar Garunix, but a Bottomless Trap Hole was supposed to take care of it. However, a Circle of the Fire Kings foiled that plan. Wind-Up Rabbit left the field when a Fiendish Chain attempted to shut it down, Baran added Onslaught of the Fire Kings from his Deck to his hand and he passed play. Johannes added Evilswarm Thunderbird and play was back to Baran. He went for Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Tiger King and added Fire Formation - Tenki, he activated it and this got him Fire King Avatar Yaksha.

Things would get tricky in just a second!

Things would get tricky in just a second!

Baran had to consider his next play carefully, but he eventually decided on Circle of the Fire Kings, targeting Fire King Avatar Yaksha. Johannes now decided to activate Overworked to get rid of Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Tiger King. Baran Chained Circle of the Fire Kings and then there was a mis-understanding whether the effect of Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Tiger King was activated prior to that or not (and also whether Circle of the Fire Kings was activated or not). Baran claimed he did announce the effect of Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Tiger King whereas Johannes claimed that his opponent never claimed his intent to use the effect of Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Tiger King. Baran also claimed he now didn't want to activate Circle of the Fire Kings although the card had been face-up on the field before. The head judge was called over to resolve this little situation. In the end, it was ruled that the effect of Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Tiger King has not been activated since Baran never detached for the effect. It was also ruled that Circle of the Fire Kings was activated since the card was face-up on the field at some point, indicating that Baran wanted to activate it. So now Fire King Avatar Yaksha and Fire King High Avatar Garunix were on the field. A new Fire King Avatar Yaksha came down from Baran's hand. He attacked with Fire King High Avatar Garunix, but Dimensional Prison stopped that plan. Fire King Avatar Yaksha then attacked Wind-Up Rabbit and Johannes temporarily banished both of his monsters.

This wasn't looking too great for Johannes!

This wasn't looking too great for Johannes!

The following turn, they came both back, but this triggered the Fire King's effect. This then caused Johannes' monsters to leave the field once again. Coach Soldier Wolfbark entered play on Baran's turn and it attempted to return Fire King Avatar Yaksha to the field. Johannes had no response, Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Tiger King entered play, this got Baran another Fire Formation - Tenki, which in turn got him Coach Soldier Wolfbark from his Deck. Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Tiger King attacked over Evilswarm Thunderbird and Fire King High Avatar Garunix further reduced Johannes' Life. Wind-Up Rabbit came back, Johannes only set a monster and he passed play. A Royal Decree got activated during the End Phase and the following turn, Coach Soldier Wolfbark hit the field. It once again returned Fire King Avatar Yaksha and that's when Johannes extended the hand.

Baran Tekin advances to the Top 32!

That concludes all the matches that we took a closer look at. We'll see many of these players again shortly in the Top 32, but then we'll sit right next to them in our Feature Match!
