Round 3: Manuel Körber (Thunder Family) vs. Stewart Almeida (Fire Fist)

[p]With more than 700 matches per round, it can take a little longer for a new round to start. We tried to make the best use of the additional time and asked players what they were bringing to the table this weekend. One response stood out: Manuel Körber told us he was running the Thunder Family archetype, so we can expect some crazy Xyz Summons in next to no time!
[/p][p]
Stuart Almeida on the other hand relies on a Deck that seemed to be just as crazy – when I quickly went over it, I saw [rabbit], Firefist monsters AND Gladiator Beasts. Sound like lots of excitement to me already!

Manuel Körber is going crazy with the Thunder Family archetype today!

[nbsp][p]
Körber won the die roll and opted to go first. He revealed and [ss]ed [tsh], searching his Deck for 2 copies of [sishunder]. He [ns]ed one of it, banished [tsh], set 2 spells or traps and in the End Phase, the banished monster returned to his hand.
[/p][p]
Almeida found [ff tenki] in his opening hand, but [mst] made sure he couldn’t search his Deck for a monster. He [ns]ed [andal], but [tt] wiped the field!
[/p][p]
Once again, [tsh] allowed Körber to search his Deck. This time, he went for 2 copies of [mahunder]. He [ns]ed [sishunder], banished [tsh], attacked directly with 900, set 2 spells or traps and ended with [tsh] returning to his hand.
[/p][nbsp]
Sishunder now went for a direct attack!
Sishunder now went for a direct attack!

[nbsp]
[p]Almeida simply set 2 back row cards.
[/p][p]
Körber now went for it. He found [pahunder], he [ss]ed [mahunder] and together, his monsters were used to [xyz] [16]. [bth] was supposed to deal with it, but [lance] made sure it would stick! Körber used the effect to negate opposing Spell Cards, he attacked directly, leaving Almeida on 5600 Life Points and passed.
[/p][p]
Almeida added a second back row card again.
[/p][p]
[tsh] continued to work overtime, this time allowing Körber to search his Deck for 2 copies of [mahunder]. He used the effect of [16], naming “traps”, he followed it up with [mahunder] and [pahunder] and a second [mahunder] came down. After the dust had settled, Almeida was left with no Life Points!
[/p][nbsp]

Manuel Körber takes the lead!

[nbsp][p]
Talk about an explosive opening! Special Summon after Special Summon allowed Manuel Körber to take total control of the first game and it certainly seemed like Almeida never had a chance to gain the upper hand!
[/p][nbsp]

Could Stuart Almeida fight back from the early loss?!
Could Stuart Almeida fight back from the early loss?!

[nbsp][p]
This time it would be Almeida who would be going first and he kicked things off with [df], followed by [rabbit] for 2 copies of [gww]. He used both copies to [xyz] to [ff tigerking], he then activated [ff tenki], searching his Deck for [ff bear], he set 3 more face-down Spell or Trap Cards and ended his turn. Quite the opening!
[/p][p]
[mst] on [df] was met with no response from Almeida. Körber tried to follow it up with [tsh], which worked, allowing Körber to add 2 copies of [sishunder] to his hand. One copy then came down, Körber set 3 back row cards and during the End Phase, he added [tsh] back to his hand.
[/p][nbsp]
Körber's Warning came just in the nick of time!
Körber's Warning came just in the nick of time!

[nbsp][p]Almeida attempted to [ns] [ff bear], but Körber found [warning] among his face-down cards. A second [ff tenki] allowed Almeida to add [ff dragon] to his hand, play proceeded with the Battle Phase, but the attack of [ff tigerking] was supposed to end in [prison]. Almeida chained [lance], however, forcing the attack through and getting rid of [sishunder]!
[/p][p]
[tsh] started to work overtime again; this time, Körber added 2 copies of [mahunder] to his hand. He [ns]ed [rai oh], but [bth] banished it for good.
[/p][p]
Play was back to Almeida, who [ns]ed [ff dragon]. He sent both copies of [ff tenki] to the Graveyard to bring back [ff bear]. The third (!) [ff tenki] triggered the effect of [ff dragon], allowing him to search his Deck for both [ff bear] and [ff tensen].
[/p][nbsp]
Almeida boasted quite an impressive field!

[nbsp][p]
A Special Summon of a second [ff tigerking] allowed Almeida to add [ff tensu] to his hand, he then [ns]ed [ff bear] before he proceeded with the Battle Phase. Almeida’s last attack was met with [lance], but Körber miscalculated since that was still not enough and that meant we would need a third Duel to decide on a winner in this match!
[/p][nbsp]

Stuart Almeida ties the score!

[nbsp][p]
Both players took only very little time accessing their Side Decks this time. Körber then went first, he [ns]ed [rai oh] and he added 3 back row cards.
[/p][nbsp]

Körber had the perfect answer to Heavy Storm: Starlight Road!
Körber had the perfect answer to Heavy Storm: Starlight Road!

[nbsp][p]
Almeida tried his luck with [storm], but Körber had the perfect answer in [road]! Now with both [sdd] and [rai oh] on the field, it seemed like he was in a great spot to gain an advantage. Almeida didn’t lose his cool and he [ns]ed [ff bear]. When he declared an attack into [rai oh], Körber found [bom] in his back row to make sure his monster would get to see another turn. Almeida set 2.
[/p][p]
Körber attacked with [sdd] over the set Fire Fist monster and [rai oh] attacked directly.
[/p][p]
Almeida found [df], he [ns]ed [ff gorilla], but this time, Körber had [prison].
[/p][p]
The following turn, Körber tried to add a card with [pod] to his hand, but our table judge quickly caught the mistake and rewinded the game – [rai oh] didn’t allow for the activation. Direct attacks followed, leaving Almeida on 1700 Life Points. Körber set a monster and ended.
[/p][p]
The third time’s the charm must have been what Almeida was thinking. He [ns]ed another Fire Fist Monster and declared another attack into [rai oh], but when Körber flipped [lance], all Almeida could do was extend his hand.
[/p][nbsp]

Manuel Körber remains undefeated!

[nbsp][p]
This has been a very enjoyable match of two players that had quite a few pleasant exchanges. It’s been a great showing of sportsmanship, especially when Almeida didn’t even flinch and extended the hand after Körber found the third answer to his attempt to overcome [rai oh].
