Round 3: Ping Xiao (Dragon Ruler) vs. Elliott Branston (Dark World)

Ping Xiao won the first ever UK YCS in Brighton two years ago. He’s from Bristol, playing and Judging regularly at his local tournaments. His opponent is 11-year-old Elliott Branston from Sweden who has been playing for five years and decided to bring his Dark World Deck to the YCS. Both Duelists are undefeated today with a 2-0 record. Branston won the roll and will be going first!

The Swedish Duelist started things off with an [upstart]. [dwd] was next – Branston discarded [snoww] and Xiao discarded [vane]. Snoww searched out [gates]. It was activated and Banished Snoww, discarding [broww] and drawing twice. He set four backrow and passed.

Xiao exclaimed at his bad luck – he had already faced two Dark World Decks today! He [ns]ed [trooper] and used it’s effect to send three cards to the Graveyard – two copies of [blaster] and a [7ss]. He attacked and Set two [st] before passing.

Branston drew and flipped two copies of [reckless] but Xiao chained [trap stun]! He responded to that with [6s] and called four and six, but a five was rolled! “That’s all my friend Pang’s fault – he told me to go with four and six!” Two [tidal] were amongst the discards, along with [f guard] and [corseca].

The Swede used Gates, discarded Broww and drawing twice. He played a new Gates over his previous one and used it to discard [grapha] and destroy [trooper]. [stardust] was Banished for [maldust] which bought Xiao to 6500. He set two and passed.

Xiao drew and [ns]ed [debris]. [sd] thwarted its attempt to use it’s effect and then played [ravine] over Gates. He discarded [maxx] to add [brandistock] to his hand and discarded it for [coc] to draw two cards. He banished [blaster] and [corseca] to revive [tidal] and added another Blaster to his hand. The two monsters [synch]ed into [star eater] which attacked. [ced] attempted to make it go away but a chained [mst] from Xiao on [sd] meant Star Eater was unaffected! A great play.

Branston just set an [st].

Xiao played [7ss] Banishing [blaster] and searching [trigon]. He discarded it for [ravine] and sent [redox] to the Graveyard. Branston ate 3200 from Star Eater and then conceeded on the next turn!

[h2]Ping Xiao takes game one in his third Dark World matchup of the day![/h2]

Both players sided pretty quickly as they knew these matchups very well and we were quickly into game two with Branston starting us off.

[dwd] was first, Xiao discarding [redox] and Branston dropped [beiige], [ss]ing it. He activated [gates], played another over it and Set a card before playing [dragged]! Another Beiige was discarded and he took Xiao’s [7ss]. [tgu] was next, searching [broww] and everything on the field combined to make [pearl] and [17].

Xiao Banished Redox from the Graveyard and [tdrag] from his hand to [ss] Tidal, searching another Redox and [aklys]. He used the effect to [ss] [legionnaire] and [ced] stopped it becoming a problem. Tidal attacked over [17] and two [st] finished the turn.

Branston drew and wanted to use Gates, Banishing Beiige. Xiao chained [pwwb] to put Gates on top of the Deck and Branston could only pass.

Xiao [ns]ed [legionnaire] and equipped [aklys] from the Graveyard. It destroyed the [pearl] on his opponent’s side of the field, and a flipped [return] sealed the match in his favour!

[h2]Ping Xiao wins 2-0 and continues on with an unblemished record![/h2]
