Round 4: Matt Bennett (Reficule Burn) vs. Kevin Semlali (Plant Synchro)

17.12.2011 | 16:12 |

[p]We found yet another player with the home advantage on his side: Matt Bennett. He was picked as he’s relying on [reficule] to burn his opponents! Quite a strategy if you ask me. His opponent is Kevin Semlali from France, apparently one of the more successful French Duelists..
[/p][p]
Semlali won the die roll and opted to go first.

Matt Bennett's just playing for laughs, but so far he's doing quite successful!

[nbsp][p]
Semlali started with [rai oh] in front of a face-down Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Bennett let the cat out of the back early. He [ns]ed [reficule], followed it up with [upstart], he set 4 cards to his back row and passed.
[/p][p]
Semlali drew and Bennett found [gift card] in his Spell and Trap Card Zone. An attack with [rai oh] followed, but Bennett activated [cylinder]! Semlali checked with a judge real quick before chaining [econ] to take control of [reficule] and not having to take the damage. That meant 1400 damage for Bennett.

[nbsp][p]
Semlali advanced to his Main Phase 2 and he took some time before opting to activate [foolish]. He searched his deck for [dandy] and sent it to his Graveyard. This got him 2 tokens. He [ss]ed [bulb] and Bennett activated [just desserts]. That meant 2000 damage for Semlali, but that didn’t stop him from tuning his monsters to [tghl]. He brought back [bulb], then [fsynch] was [ss]ed and that meant 2 more cards for Semlali! He set a Spell or Trap and play was back to Bennett. It seemed like Semlali found quite a good way to get out of his desperate situation.
[/p][p]
Bennett [ss]ed [v queen] by Tributing [fsynch]. He passed without performing any other actions. [mst] destroyed [bribe] in Bennett’s End Phase and that meant game according to Semlali.
[/p][nbsp]
Semlali checked his Graveyard one last time before setting up his huge turn!

[nbsp][p]
He switched [v queen] to [atk]. Banished [dandy] to bring back [spore], then Tuned it with a token to [catastor], then he [ns]ed [veiler] and this allowed him to tune it with [catastor] to [brionac]. He now had the Light Monster in his [grave] that he was missing, so he could [ss]ed [bls]! Attacks of all his monsters followed and that was enough to reduce Bennett’s Life Points to 0!

[nbsp][p]
At first it seemed like the element of surprise would work in Matt Bennett’s favor and he could win this Duel rather easily. That was before Kevin Semlali found ways to work around [reficule] and invite a couple of powerful Synchro Monsters to his party that would win him the Duel!
[/p][p]
As expected, Bennett opted to go first in the second game. His opening hand featured [reficule] which he quickly [ns]ed to the field. He followed it up with [mop] and a face-down Spell or Trap and he then activated [duality]. This got him [gift card] and he also revealed [upstart] and [tpod]. He set another Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][nbsp]
Things were going Semlali's way!

[nbsp][p]
In Semlali’s Standby Phase, Bennett activated [tpod]. He gained 2000 Life Poins and Semlali was happy to flip “Heads”. That was before Bennett explained that [reficule] would turn that into burn damage! [gift card] followed and that meant Semlali was already low on Life Points with only 3000 remaining.
[/p][nbsp]
... that was before Bennett found some of his Traps!

[nbsp][p]
[tour] allowed Semlali to bring out [sangan]. He attacked into [reficule] and searched his deck for [veiler]. He activated [ground] in [mp] 2 and passed after setting a Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Bennett set a Spell or Trap and passed. He paid for [mop]. [mst] got rid of [simochi] during the End Phase and play was back to Semlali.
[/p][p]
Another [tour] came down and Semlali [ss]ed the third copy from his deck. Attacks followed and in [mp] 2, [zenmaines] was Xyz Summoned. Semlali set a Spell or Trap and he passed.

[nbsp][p]
Bennett paid another time for [mop]. He set a card to each zone and ended his turn.
[/p][p]
Semlali switched [tour] to [def], set a monster and passed.
[/p][p]
Bennett didn’t perform any actions on his following turn.
[/p][p]
[ryko] was flipped and it targeted Bennett’s face-down Spell or Trap. Bennett chained it: [just desserts]! That dealt 1500 poins of damage to Semlali. The French Duelist [ns]ed [veiler] and Tuned his monsters to [brionac]. He first returned Bennet’s set monster to the field, then [mop]. As he discarded [dandy], this got him 2 Tokens. Attacks with [zenmaines] and [brionac] followed and that concluded Semlali’s turn.
[/p][p]
Back to Bennett who only set a Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Semlali drew, but before he could perform any actions, Bennett flipped [secret barrel]!!! That dealt enough damage to win him the second Duel!

[nbsp][p]
It seemed like Matt Bennett was standing with his back against the wall, however, he still found a way to win the Duel!
[/p][p]
Semlali only set a Spell or Trap.

[nbsp][p]
Semlali drew and Bennett was quick to activate [gift card]. He Chained [tpod], then [secret barrel] and [simochi]! Semlali chained [bom] to turn [reficule] face-down, however, as [simochi] resolved first, that didn’t make a difference! After all of the effects on the chain resolved, Semlali was left with a meager 1800 Life Points!
[/p][p]
He [fs]ed [hamster], searched his deck for [ryko] and Tributed [hamster] for [cd]. He attacked over [reficule] and passed.
[/p][p]
Bennett simply set a monster and passed.
[/p][p]
Semlali [fs]ed [ryko], then activated [141], discarding [bulb] to bring out [spore]. He asked for the Life Points and Bennett announced that he was up on 10.000. He [ns]ed [tour] and searched his deck for another copy. Both were used to Xyz Summon [leviair]. One of the Xyz Materials was detatched to [ss]ed [hamster] back to the field. Semlali then Tuned [hamster] and [spore] to [tghl]. He brought back [bulb] next and Tuned it with [cd] to [brionac]. This meant he could also draw a card thanks to [tghl].
[/p][p]
[spore] also returned to the field and together with [ryko], it was Tuned to [arm]. Semlali drew another card. He used the effect of [brionac], discarded [sangan] and returned Bennett’s monster to his hand. Attacks followed and after the dust had settled, Bennett was left with 1700 Life Points. Semlali discarded a card in Main Phase 2 to bounce [simochi] to Bennett’s hand, he set a Spell or Trap and ended.
[/p][p]
Bennett only set a Monster and passed.
[/p][nbsp]
Once again, Semlali went for Synchro Summons!

[nbsp][p]
Semlali used [leviair]'[s] effect to bring back [bulb]. He Tuned it with [arm] to [catastor] and drew another card. He used [brionac]'[s] effect to return Bennett’s monster to the hand, an attack with [tghl] followed and that meant game and match for Semlali!
[/p][nbsp]

[nbsp][p]
I asked Bennett about what went wrong and he told me that he just needed one more good card. If he would have drawn into another [gift card] or [tpod], he would have won the match!
