Round 5 Feature Match: Nicholas Mecsery vs Logan Brailey

We are now entering Round 5 of the YCS. This will be the halfway mark of the swiss rounds of the event. Creeping to the higher tables we are beginning to see a lot of Sky Striker Orcust as expected but also some cool decks around. Fortunately for us, two of them got paired against each other this round. Both duelists are currently undefeated but only one will remain undefeated after this round.  On one side we have Logan Brailey from Wollongong playing a deck which consists of Dinosaurs, Danger!?, Thunder Dragons and Guardragons up against Nicholas Mecsery from Sydney playing Paleozoic. Logan wins the dice roll and would like to go first. It’s time to DUEL!!

R5 Logan

Duel 1:

Logan opens up the duel with Danger!? Mothman’s effect which unfortunately Nicholas is able to find. Logan activates its effect and they both draw a card with Logan discarding Destrudo, the Lost Dragon Fission and Nicholas discarding Paleozoic Oleinades. Logan attempts to activate Fossil Dig but is met with an Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. He passes without anything to do.

Nicholas draws and sets 4 cards and passes.

Logan draws a card and concedes immediately saying he didn’t have any playable options and Nicholas extends his sympathies.

Duel 2:

Logan chooses to go first again game 2 and opens Evenly Matched, Red Reboot, Darkest Diabolos, Lord of the Lair, Called by the Grave and Souleating Oviraptor. He Normal Summons the Souleating Oviraptor and uses its effect to send Carboneddon to the Graveyard. He activates Carboneddon’s effect banishing itself to Special Summon Flamvell Guard from the deck. He Synchro Summons Ib the World Chalice Justicar and uses her effect to add World Legacy Guardragon to his hand. He activates the spell to Special Summon back Flamvell Guard and then Link Summons for Beat Cop from the Underworld. Ib activates in the Graveyard summoning World Chalice Guardragon from his deck. Logan proceeds to Link Summon Guardragon Elpy using World Chalice Guardragon and then uses the World Legacy Guardragon to move Guardragon Elpy to the Middle Main Minster Zone and Nicholas activates Nibiru the Primal Being Tributing Logan’s 2 monsters to summon itself and a token to Logan’s field. Logan sets 2 to the back and passes.

Nicholas draws for turn and attacks with Nibiru destroying the token he summoned. He sets 1 Monster and 2 Spells/Traps and then passes back to Logan.

Logan draws a card, thinks for a few seconds and shakes his head as he passes back.

Nicholas draws and Flip Summons Dupe Frog, sets 2 more Spell/Traps, attacks with both his monsters and then at the end of the Battle Phase, Logan activates Evenly Matched and Nicholas decides to banish one set trap and his Nibiru the Primal Being. He passes back to Logan.

Logan draws for turn and begins with Monster Reborn targeting Souleating Oviraptor which he uses to send Overtex Qoatlus to the Graveyard which then adds Double Evolution Pill to his hand. Logan activates the Double Evolution Pill banishing the Overtex Qoatlus and his Beat Cop from the Underworld to Special Summon Ultimate Conductor Tyranno from his deck. Next up, he tributes Souleating Oviraptor to Tribute Summon Thunder Dragonhawk. As a Dark Monster was tributed, he is now able to Special Summon the Darkest Diabolos, Lord of the Lair from his hand. He declares an attack with all his monsters and when Nicholas tries to activate Paleozoic Canadia, Logan swiftly responds with a Red Reboot. After counting how much damage he would take, Nicholas concedes and Logan is able to take game 2.

R5 Logan win

Duel 3:

Nicholas declares his intentions to go first in game 3. He opens a hand of Reckless Greed, Trap Trick, Imperial Order, Paleozoic Dinomischus and Absolute King Black Jack. He sets all 4 Traps and passes his turn.

R5 Nick

Logan draws and immediately goes to the Battle Phase and ending it activating Evenly Matched. Nicholas responds with Paleozoic Dinomischus as Chain Link 2 targeting Evenly Matched, and Reckless Greed as Chain Link 3. Resolving the chain, Nicholas draws Artifact Lancea and Nibiru the Primal Being and discards Absolute King Black Jack. The King activates and Nicholas looks at the top 3 cards of his card and rearranges it based on his needs. In Main Phase 2 Logan activates Fossil Dig to dig for a Souleating Oviraptor and summons that send Carboneddon to the graveyard. Like in the previous game, he banishes it to summon Flamvell Guard. At this point Nicholas activates Absolute King Black Jack’s effect to excavate the top card of his deck and because it was a trap card – Paleozoic Dinomischus he was able to set it and activate it immediately to banish the Flamvell Guard while discarding Artifact Lancea. Logan activates Danger!? Tsuchinoko discarding Destrudo the Lost Dragon Fission to summon itself and draw a card. He pays half his Life Points to summon the discarded Destrudo from the Graveyard and with his Dragon, his Reptile and his Dinosaur, he Link Summons Curious, the Lightsworn Dominion. On Summon, he sends Overtex Qoatlus with Curious to add Double Evolution Pill and send the top 3 cards from his deck to the graveyard. He activates the Double Evolution Pill banishing a Thunder Dragondark from hand and Overtex Qoatlus from the graveyard to Summon Ultimate Conductor Tyranno. Thunder Dragondark activates adding Thunder Dragonhawk which he immediately discards to Special Summon the Thunder Dragondark back. Nicholas has had enough and summons a Nibiru the Primal Being tributing all the monsters on the field. Logan with no plays left passes his turn.

Without his Draw Phase and being unable to attak over the Primal Being token, Nicholas has no choice but to just pass his turn. Logan draws for turn and Special Summons the Chaos Dragon Levianeer he just drew and with a 7800 attack Primal Being token, he has more than enough to damage to win the match.

R5 Logan win g3

After opening very poorly in Game 1, Logan is able to play through game 2 and 3 to win the match moving on at 5-0.
