Round 7: Federico Pastore (Infernity) vs. Mattia Messa (Dragon Ruler)

Only 2 more rounds remain in today’s competition and that’s in case we don’t move one of the Swiss Rounds to tomorrow since it’s getting somewhat late. We’ve picked the second table for this round’s Feature Match with Federico Pastore going up against Mattia Messa.

Pastore is usually flying some rather different colors; he’s one of the many Judges that make these large events possible in the first place. Today, he’s piloting an Infernity Deck through a field of Dragon Rulers and since he just beat Michel Grüner, he seems to be on quite the roll. He would have to overcome a very similar feat this round, since Messa was also relying on the Dragon Rulers.

Pastore won the die roll and he went first, setting a monster and 3 Spell or Trap Cards.

An [7ss] with [blaster] got him another [blaster] from his Deck, he then also set 3 back row cards and play was right back to Pastore.

[patrol] got [ns]ed and [heiress] [fs]ed. He went in for attacks and dealt 2600 points of damage.

[6s] was met with [trap stun]; [blaster] then got discarded to destroy [mf] and after once again going up to 3 set [st]s, Messa passed.

[monk] was [ns]ed by Pastore and Messa had to give this some thought. He had no response, causing Pastore to advance to the Battle Phase and deal some more damage. Messa was left with 2800 Life Points after the attacks connected. In [mp] 2, Pastore [xyz]ed [dweller].

A [mst] destroyed [ced] and Messa then [ss]ed [tidal]. He followed it up with [pachy], play proceeded with the Battle Phase and [pachy] attacked over [heiress]. [tidal] then took care of [dweller] and it was back to Pastore who was now lacking a field, with [tidal] returning to Messa’s hand.

He rebuilt with [arma], sending [necromancer] to his Graveyard. [arma] attacked [pachy] and Messa had no response, losing his monster and 200 Life Points. In [mp] 2, [patrol] got banished so another copy could get Summoned. Both monsters were then used to [xyz] [ddw]. It destroyed itself to destroy Messa’s [bth]. Pastore then used the effect of the [patrol] that just got sent to his Graveyard so he could [ss] [inf archfiend]. This then got him [necromancer] from his Deck.

Messa set a monster and a back row card so he now had 2 spells or traps again.

Pastore drew into a [mst] to destroy [warning]. He attacked into [debris] and ended.

On his following turn, Messa checked his opponent’s Graveyard before [ss]ing [blaster], discarding [tempestd] and [tidal]. This got him 2 fresh copies of the 2 cards. He switched [debris] to [atk], [blaster] attacked over [inf archfiend] and [debris] dealt some damage. In [mp] 2, he [synch]ed [star eater] before passing play.

Pastore now tried to start his comeback with [necromancer], but [bom] foiled that plan.

Messa then brought back a [blaster] from his Graveyard and he then searched his Deck for [corseca]. It got [ns]ed a second later, both monsters were then used to [synch] [sdd], [tidal] came down and attacks followed. [infbreak] bought Pastore another turn, but he was left with only 1600 Life Points!

He drew into [grepher], [launcher] followed and that meant he could actually sport a decent comeback!

The [necromancer][s] both returned to the field, and they then brought back [inf archfiend]. This then got Pastore an [infbreak] from his Deck, he set it and he then [xyz]ed [66]. He used its effect, he then brought back [inf archfiend] for a second time. [leviair] also came down, [patrol] returned to the field, [ddw] was next and it destroyed itself to get rid of [sdd], which however Tributed itself. The [necromancer] that Pastore had searched for a moment earlier came down from his hand, courtesy of [patrol]. This returned [inf archfiend], Pastore searched his Deck and he set a trap before ending, while [sdd] returned to the field.

Messa now drew into [return]. He checked his opponent’s Graveyard before advancing to the Battle Phase, however, [infbreak] made sure he wouldn’t lose his remaining Life Points right then and there.
Messa then took the invitation, [ss]ing [blaster] before ending.

Once again, Pastore went for his Infernity combos, this time [xyz]ing [cowboy]. [inf archfiend] came back, netting him another copy from his Deck, he then used [cowboy] to get rid of [blaster], he was about to attack for game, but [return] provided Messa with quite the field, returning 4 Dragon Rulers and [sdd]!
Pastore had to give this some thought and he knocked on the table in a slightly disappointed manner. Play proceeded with [mp] 2 where Pastore activated [upstart] to draw a card. He then Set a card, he checked his Graveyard before activating [transmodify] to tag out his [necromancer] for [inf archfiend]. He then went on and [xyz]ed [maestro] before passing play.

Messa used [tidal] to search his Deck for [tempestd], which he then banished for [7ss] to draw more cards and add another [tempestd] to his hand. There were only 7 minutes remaining in the round since the previous turns with all their Special Summons had taken quite some time, but neither player was slow playing.
Messa then found [ravine], ditching [tempestd] to also add [redox] to his Graveyard. He returned it to the field in face-up [def], banishing [tempestd], [blaster] followed suit in [atk] and after [blaster] attacked over [66], both monsters were used in [mp] 2 to [xyz] [11], which then convinced [cowboy] that this was the better side on the field. Pastore thought about this for a short while before accessing his Side Deck.

[h2]Mattia Messa takes the lead![/h2]

Only 4 minutes remained after this first Duel that took quite its toll. Both players seemed somewhat exhausted after they had to make so many decisions that could have all cost them the game.

Federico Pastore opted to go first again, activating [rota] to search his Deck for [grepher]. He summoned it, discarding [patrol] to also send [heiress] to his Graveyard. He set 4 cards, [patrol] then got banished from his Graveyard so he could summon [inf archfiend] and Messa dropped [maxx] in response. Pastore didn’t flinch, [ss]ing [66] and performing more summons so he could also search another Infernity Trap that he set in his back row. He left his opponent with a fully stacked hand and passed.

[ravine] was Messa’s opening and he then discarded [tempestd] to send [blaster] to his Graveyard. It returned to the field with [tempestd] and [tidal] getting banished, but Messa found [empty] in his back row to foil this plan! Pastore was still allowed to add [tidal] and [tempestd] to his hand, however.
He held onto 7 cards in his hand and he read over Pastore’s [66] again before replacing [ravine] to fill his Graveyard some more. He discarded [redox], searching his Deck for [corseca]. He set a monster and 2 spells or traps before passing, but [infbreak] destroyed [mst] during the End Phase ([empty] stayed on the field thanks to [66]'[s] effect).

[ced] returned Messa’s sole protection to his hand. Pastore then switched all of his monsters to [atk] and he went in, dealing 6900 points of damage. A [bom] that was supposed to stop one of the monsters got met with [barrier].

Play was back to Messa who was standing with his back against the wall. He [ns]ed [ferret] to attack over [patrol]. He set a back row card before ending.

Pastore drew and he sent [inf archfiend] into [ferret]. He attacked with his Xyz Monster and when Messa tried to stop it, Pastore had yet another [barrier] to make sure the attack would connect and the match would end in a Draw.

[h2]Federico Pastore and Mattia Messa draw![/h2]

Yet another epic match with no clear winner at the end of it. Federico Pastore fought back from an unlucky defeat in the first game that took a lot of time. He’s still undefeated, however, so both he and Mattia Messa can go all the way this weekend and make it to the Final 32!
