Round 7: Patrik Merc (SLO) vs. Thomas Cavaliere (FRA)

[p]We’ve made it to the final round of the first day! It appears that sometimes, all you need is a little extra motivation. Patrik Merc, the Slovenian Champion, asked us earlier for a Feature Match, but his record wasn’t too impressive. PJ told him to keep winning games and now he’s back, sitting on a 4 – 2 record with changes of making it to the Knock Out portion of the tournament. Let’s see what his Machina Gadgets will do against Thomas Cavaliere’s Tengu Plants!
[/p][p]
Merc won the die roll and opted to go first, just as expected.

He kicked things off with [duality], revealing [prison], [green] and [yellow]. The National Champion was quick to pick up the Trap. He [ns]ed [frame], but [veiler] came down to make sure he couldn’t add another card to his hand. He Set 3 Spells or Traps and passed.
[/p][p]
Cavaliere was left with 5 cards in his hand. He Set 1 to each zone and ended his turn.
[/p][p]
Merc [ns]ed [yellow] and opted to activate its effect. Down came another [veiler] – would Cavaliere’s gamble pay off or would Merc hold onto yet another Gadget?![br]
An attack into [debris] followed and Merc passed, seemingly not too happy with the outcome of his offensive plays.
[/p][p]
[sangan] was [ns]ed on Cavaliere’s side of the field. He Tuned both of his monsters to [brd], however, Merc’s [warning] made sure he would keep the cards on his side of the field. Cavaliere passed with no further actions.
[/p][nbsp]

[nbsp][p]
Merc had [rai oh] next, but it was met with [warning]. He checked his face-down Spells or Traps before discarding [green] to [ss] [fortress]. He proceeded with the Battle Phase, attacked with [yellow], [frame] and [fortress]. “No [gorz]?”, he asked surprised, but Cavaliere could only shake his head.
[/p][p]
The following turn, Cavaliere activated [mst]. He used a dice to decide which card to target and hit the [prison]. [debris] was [ns]ed, returning [veiler] to the field. [mind] targeting [fortress] was next, however, Merc Chained [ced] to return the monster to his hand. Cavaliere opted to go Side Decking, shuffling up his cards.
[/p][nbsp]

Patrik Merc wins the first Duel!

[nbsp][p]
Cavaliere tried everything to stay in the Duel and sacrificed both of his [veiler]'[s] early in the game. Still, he couldn’t stop Merc from gaining the upper hand, resulting in the Champion’s quick win in the first Duel!
[/p][nbsp]

Could Thomas Cavaliere start a comeback and turn the Duel upside down?!
Could Thomas Cavaliere start a comeback and turn the Duel upside down?!

[nbsp][p]
[rai oh] together with 2 face-down Spells or Traps marked Cavaliere’s opening play.
[/p][p]
Merc had 4 face-down Spells or Traps and passed.
[/p][p]
[rai oh] dealt 1900 damage, Cavaliere added [tengu] to the party, but Merc responded with [rivalry]! Cavaliere thought for a second before Chaining [mst]. It wouldn’t quite make the difference as Merc Chained [gozen]! [tengu] bit the dust![/p][p]
Merc simply Set a Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
[rai oh] attacked into [prison]. Another copy of [rai oh] came down in Main Phase 2, but Merc found a [warning] for it in his back row.
[/p][p]
Merc passed once more.
[/p][p]
Cavaliere Set a monster.
[/p][nbsp]
Gadgets; win this Duel for me!
Gadgets; win this Duel for me!

[nbsp][p]
[red] was [ns]ed in Merc’s following turn. “I’ll attack into [ryko]!”, Merc remarked. He declared an attack and sure enough, it was [ryko]. It destroyed [gozen].
[/p][p]
[duality] found Cavaliere [reborn]. Merc wanted to check Cavaliere’s Graveyard before his opponent Set a monster and passed his turn.
[/p][p]
Quite a stand-off if you ask me. Merc considered his next move carefully; he sighed, shook his head and brought out [fortress] as a [ss], discarding [yellow]. [veiler] followed as a [ns] and both monsters were Tuned to [sdd]. With 1 card left in his hand, he entered the Battle Phase, but Cavaliere had [prison] to get rid of [sdd]. The Slovenian Champion shook his head and play was back to Cavaliere.
[/p][p]
Cavaliere [ns]ed [lfb] and Tributed it for its effect to search his deck for a second copy. This was also Tributed to bring out [dandy], however, [chain] made sure the little Plant wouldn’t cause any problems. Play was back to Merc.
[/p][p]
He passed his turn without any actions.
[/p][p]
Cavaliere now had [debris], but [tt] wiped the field right after [lfb] entered it.
[/p][p]
Merc passed after Setting another Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Cavaliere now opted to activate [reborn] to bring back [rai oh]! He attacked directly with it and was done with his turn.
[/p][p]
Back to Merc, who brought out [fortress]. [rai oh] Tributed itself to negate the Summon!
[/p][p]
[trooper] came down in Cavaliere’s following turn. It attacked directly. Cavaliere Set a Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Merc now found [frame]. He activated its effect, but Cavaliere had an answer!
[/p][nbsp]
Call of the Haunted foiled Merc's plans!

[nbsp][p]
[coth] brougth back [rai oh] from the Graveyard, making sure Merc wouldn’t get to add another card to his hand. [frame] attacked over [trooper] and Merc was done.
[/p][p]
[rai oh] attacked over [frame]. Cavaliere Set a monster.
[/p][p]
Merc’s [reborn] brought back [fortress]. It attacked over [rai oh]. Lots and lots of trades in this Duel!
[/p][p]
Cavaliere simply passed.
[/p][p]
[fortress] attacked into [ryko] and Cavaliere opted to only send cards from the top of his Deck to the Graveyard, not destroying a card on the field. Merc Set a Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Back to Cavaliere, who Set 2 Spells or Traps.
[/p][p]
[fortress] declared another direct attack; Cavaliere flipped [dust] and Chained his own [malevolent]. Out came [gorz]![br]
During [mp] 2, Merc [ns]ed [veiler], he then Set a Spell or Trap and Tuned both of his monsters to [scrap dragon]. He destroyed his Set [opp] to destroy [gorz].
[/p][nbsp]
Possibly the best new card for Cavaliere now: Pot of Avarice!

[nbsp][p]
Cavaliere desperately needed an answer now; his Deck certainly didn’t disappoint as he found [poa]. He drew into [b]another copy[/b] of the Spell and drew 2 more cards! Merc could only shake his head in disbelief, it seemed unreal to him. Cavaliere found another [lfb] and Merc was quick to shuffle up his cards.
[/p][nbsp]

Thomas Cavaliere equals the score!

[nbsp][p]
Cavaliere had to dig forever to find his copies of the all important [pot]; after drawing into several copies of his monsters and sending lots of cards from his Deck straight to the Graveyard, he was rewarded for his tenaciousness and won the Duel with the cards drawn with his double [poa]!
[/p][p]
Merc opted to go first, kicking things off with [red]. This got him [yellow] from his deck; he Set 4 Spells or Traps and was done with his turn.
[/p][nbsp]

Cavaliere's hand in the last Duel of the day!
Cavaliere's hand in the last Duel of the day!

[nbsp][p]
Cavaliere Set a Monster and 3 Spell or Trap Cards.
[/p][p]
[rai oh] came down for Merc and Cavaliere had to give that some thought. He eventually claimed he was fine with that, an attack with [rai oh] into [ryko] followed and another [ryko], [reborn] and [prison] were sent straight to Cavaliere’s Graveyard, while [rai oh] was destroyed by its other effect.
[/p][p]
In his following turn, Cavaliere [ns]ed [tengu]. Merc was fine with that, [tengu] attacked [red], but [prison] removed it. A second [tengu] was [ss]ed and it destroyed [red]. Cavaliere added more cards to his back row until it was completely filled with Spells or Traps.
[/p][p]
Merc [ns]ed [yellow], searching his deck once more. He added a fourth card to his Spell or Trap Card zone.
[/p][p]
Cavaliere attacked over the Gadget again and passed.
[/p][nbsp]

[nbsp][p]
Down came [green] and that meant [tengu] vs. Gadget once more! Merc Set a Spell or Trap, but the [warning] was destroyed during the End Phase with [mst].
[/p][p]
Cavaliere had [duality], which got him a [warning] of his own. He added it to his hand, Set a Spell or Trap, attacked directly and passed.
[/p][p]
Play was back to Merc, who struggled to get his feet on the ground in this Duel. He Summoned [veiler] and activated [tt]. When Cavaliere tried to [ss] his last [tengu], [warning] was activated. Quite an expensive play – 3 cards only to get rid of a single copy of [tengu]. With 2 cards left in his back row, Merc passed.
[/p][p]
That last play was exactly what Cavaliere needed; he had drawn into his 3rd [tengu]! He Summoned it and attacked directly. Oh the irony!
[/p][p]
Merc only Set a monster.
[/p][p]
Cavaliere’s [tengu] destroyed the Set [red] in battle. In [mp] 2, he added another face-down [def] monster to his field.
[/p][p]
[yellow] was [ns]ed in Cavaliere’s following turn. He searched his deck for what must have been his last Gadget. He attacked into [ryko] which destroyed [rivalry] on Merc’s side of the field before passing.
[/p][p]
Cavaliere gained more and more advantage with every turn. He attacked with [tengu] and passed.
[/p][p]
Merc Set a 3rd Spell or Trap, but it was met with [mst] during the End Phase!
[/p][nbsp]
Cavaliere wasn't giving Merc even the slightest opening!
Cavaliere wasn't giving Merc even the slightest opening!

[nbsp][p]
The next turn, Cavaliere attacked with [tengu] directly, which succeeded. He then activated [call] and Merc thought long, looked at his face-down cards several times, but no, he couldn’t find an answer – all he could do was extend his hand in sportsmanslike fashion.
[/p][nbsp]

Thomas Cavaliere fights back and remains victorious in a hard-fought Match!

[nbsp][p]
Standing on the brink of defeat, Cavaliere’s double [poa] turned the second Duel around and provided him with enough momentum to go on and win the third Duel without ever dropping a sweat![/p][nbsp]
