Round 7: Ping Xiao (Dino Rabbit) vs. Samuel Gutierrez Olivs (Dino Rabbit)

[p]This is the last round for today. We invited a Spanish player to our table who still has a shot at making day 2: Samuel Gutierrez Olivs. It won’t be an easy feat, however, as he’ll go up against one of the UK’s finest players: Ping Xiao! One year ago, Xiao won YCS Brighton; if he wanted to do the same this weekend, he had to win this round. Let’s see how this goes!
[/p][p]
Xiao won the die roll and opted to go first. He opened with [guaiba], giving away his deck type. He set 4 (!) and passed.

[macro] got activated during Gutierrez’ Draw Phase. The Spanish player set 3 spells or traps and ended.
[/p][p]
[guaiba]'[s] attack ended in [prison]. Xiao set a monster.
[/p][p]
Gutierrez set a spell or trap, but it fell victim to [mst] during the End Phase.
[/p][p]
Xiao [fs]ed [reaper] and attacked, but [ced] returned it to his hand. He set it again and ended.
[/p][nbsp]
Talk about "conservative play"!
[nbsp][p]
Gutierrez set a monster and 2 spells or traps.
[/p][p]
A newly summoned [guaiba] fell deep as Gutierrez flipped [bth]. Xiao ended.
[/p][p]
Gutierrez set 2 more spells or traps, no cards remaining in his hand.
[/p][p]
At the end of the following 2 turns, both players were left with 5 spells or traps. Xiao was the first to make a move again, [ns]ing [pachy]. Gutierrez had [tt], Xiao chained [lance], targeting [pachy] and Gutierrez chained [mst] on [macro]. That meant his [sangan] would actually get sent to the Graveyard, allowing him to search his deck for [rabbit].[br]
[pachy] then attacked directly and that concluded the turn.
[/p][p]
Gutierrez [ns]ed [rabbit] and he followed it up with [ced] on [pachy]. He activated the effect, [ss]ing 2 [kabaz] to the field. He checked his Extra Deck and decided to go for [dolkka]. He declared an attack with it, Xiao flipped [mf], but a [lance] made sure the attack went through. Gutierrez set a second Spell or Trap Card and ended.

[nbsp][p]
[hole], [mst] and [pachy] dramatically simplified the game, something Xiao didn’t mind at this point. He attacked with it and passed. Gutierrez didn’t perform any actions on his following turn.
[/p][p]
That meant [pachy] could take another hit at the Spaniard’s Life Points. Xiao set a monster and ended.
[/p][p]
[guaiba] was met with [warning]!
[/p][p]
Xiao then [fs]ed [reaper] and that allowed him to strip Gutierrez of [reborn]! [pachy] attacked directly. Gutierrez only set a spell or trap.
[/p][p]
The following turn, [pachy]'[s] attack was met with [prison], but [lance] made sure Xiao’s little monster would get to see yet another turn! The British Duelist set a 3rd monster.
[/p][nbsp]
Gutierrez thought long and hard whether to attack the set monster!

[nbsp][p]
Finally, Gutierrez found something to go on the offensive again: [saber]. It attacked over Xiao’s set copy of the monster.
[/p][p]
Xiao then [ns]ed [saurus], but [bth] banished it. He attacked with [pachy] and used [bom] after the attack declaration. That resolved. Gutierrez THEN flipped [lance] to reduce the ATK of [pachy] to make sure his monster would survive the attack.
[/p][p]
“Did you find [rabbit]?”, Xiao asked. Gutierrez must have thought that actions speak louder than words as he simply attacked with [saurus] over [pachy]. He then used [rabbit] in [mp] 2 to [ss] 2 more copies of [saurus]. Both were used to Xyz Summon [laggia] and that concluded the turn.
[/p][nbsp]
A couple of lucky draws helped Gutierrez claim the upper hand!

[nbsp][p]
Gutierrez drew into [tgu]. “You did not just topdeck that card?!” Xiao couldn’t believe it. [night] got [ss]ed to the field. That meant [leviair] made a surprise appearance and a split second later, Gutierrez added [dolkka] to his side of the field. He attacked into the set [sangan], used [dolkka]'[s] effect and ended.
[/p][p]
Xiao set a spell or trap.
[/p][p]
Gutierrez brought back [guaiba] with [leviair]. [papi] hit the field and even though Xiao had [bth], that meant that the first game was over.
[/p][nbsp]

Samuel Gutierrez Olivs takes the lead!

[nbsp][p]
“I was like 4 cards ahead and you still found a way out!”, Xiao remarked, seemingly stunned. Then again, it seemed like Gutierrez had already pulled all the aces he held up his sleeve, so maybe this match could still be turned around?!
[/p][nbsp]

Xiao would go first again. He set a monster and 2 spells or traps and ended.
[/p][p]
Gutierrez found [rabbit], he activated its effect, but Xiao then used [warning]. Gutierrez set 2 back row cards.
[/p][p]
[kabaz] got [fs]ed, it attacked into [prison] and Gutierrez activated [prison], leaving Xiao surprised. “You didn’t save that?” He leaned back, contemplated his next move and he set a spell or trap. It was revealed to be [mst] during the End Phase as Gutierrez also had a [mst] for it.
[/p][p]
The Spanish player felt this was the time for [tgu] to make an appearance again. He [ss]ed [night] to the field, both were used to Xyz Summon [leviair] and when Xiao wanted to stop Gutierrez with [bom], a [lance] made sure that he could get back [rabbit]. That meant [laggia].
[/p][nbsp]
Xyz Monsters everywhere!

[nbsp][p]
Xiao [ns]ed [saurus], he attacked over [leviair], set a spell or trap and ended.
[/p][p]
Gutierrez [ns]ed [pachy] to the field. He attacked with [laggia] over [saurus] and [pachy] also attacked.
[/p][p]
Xiao set a card to each zone.
[/p][nbsp]

[nbsp][p]
Gutierrez [ns]ed [saurus]. It attacked into Xiao’s set [pachy], which meant that [laggia] would get destroyed. An attack with [pachy] followed, then it was Xiao’s turn.
[/p][p]
He used [ground] to destroy [pachy]. He added a second back row card and passed.
[/p][p]
It seemed like Gutierrez was really close now. He added [sangan] to his side of the field, to which Xiao replied: “You’re not afraid of [tt]?” Gutierrez wasn’t. He declared his attacks and Xiao revealed his face-down cards: [mst] and [storm].
[/p][nbsp]

Samuel Gutierrez Olivs wins the match!

[nbsp][p]
Xiao checked his Graveyard once again and contemplated the moves he made during the second game. He didn’t take long and came to the conclusion that he couldn’t have played it much differently. It seemed like it just wasn’t meant to be this time.
[/p][p]
Do you disagree? Take a look at the cards his deck dealt him again:
