Round 8 Feature Match: Demarco Merrett vs Josh Glen
We are back with day 2 of YCS Sydney and at the top tables we are getting an accurate representation of the decks being played there are still a couple of cool decks out there. At the top tables we still have a Pendulum deck undefeated, a Crusadia Kaiju sitting on X-1 and even a SPYRAL deck. Demarco Merrett, from Brisbane is currently 6-1 with SPYRAL and he is playing against Josh Glen from Wollongong who is playing Salamangreat. Despite the number of Salamangreat decks in the tournament, this is our first time having it on the Feature Match desk.
Demarco wins the die roll and chooses to play first opening a hand of Danger!? Jackalope, SPYRAL Resort, SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue, Orcust Cymbal Skeleton, and Reinforcement of the Army.
He begins the game activating Reinforcement of the Army to add SPYRAL Super Agent to his hand. Josh just nods his head and laughs. Next Demarco activates SYRAL Resort to add SPYRAL GEAR – Drones to look at the top 3 cards of Josh’s deck and puts it back in the same order. He then Special Summons SPYRAL Super Agent calling monster before Link Summoning his 2 monsters for SPYRAL Double Helix and uses it to Special Summon SPYRAL Master Plan and using her to add SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue to hand. Josh decides it is now a good time to activate Artifact Lancea. Demarco activates Danger!? Jackalope. Unfortunately it gets discarded but it Special Summons a Danger!? Nessie from deck. He uses his 3 monster to Link Summon Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess and sets both SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue. He ends his turn and returns Danger!? Jackalope to his deck using SPYRAL Resort.
Josh draws and Demarco activates SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue to add SPYRAL Super Agent back to hand. Josh then summons Flame Bufferlo and Link Summons Salamangreat Balelynx and activates it along with the Bufferlo and a Sea Archiver from hand. He adds Salamangreat Sanctuary and discards Salamangreat Falco to draw 2 cards. Next Josh activates Cynet Mining discarding Salamangreat Roar to add Salamangreat Gazelle to hand. With 3 potential negates from Apollousa, Josh has to really think about his turn. He discards Salamangreat Spinny to increase the attack of his Salamangreat Balelynx and then Special Summons Gazelle from his hand but Demarco uses Apollousa to negate the effect to send a Salamangreat card to the graveyard. Josh overlays Sea Archiver and Gazelle for Salamangreat Miragestallio and attacks over the Apollousa and then attacks directly with Balelynx. In Main Phase 2 Josh uses Miragestallio to detach Gazelle to special summon Salamangreat Jack Jaguar from his deck. He Link Summons Miragestallio and Balenyx to summon Salamangreat Sunlight Wolf before activating his Salamangreat Sanctuary. He Link Summons Sunlight Wolf and Balelynx into another Sunlight Wolf. Josh returns the first Sunlight Wolf to his extra deck to Special Summon Salamangreat Jack Jaguar to the field. Sunlight wolf adds Salamangreat Roar and Gazelle from the Graveyard to his Hand. Josh then summons Salamangreat Spinny from his graveyard and Link Summons using Spinny and Jack Jaguar for Knightmare Phoenix discarding Salamangreat Gazelle to destroy Spyral Resort. He Link Summons using Phoenix and Sunlight Wolf to summon Salamangreat Heatleo then another Heatleo to return both Demarco’s SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue into deck. Josh proceeds to activate Salamangreat Will and sends it to the Graveyard to Special Summon back Gazelle and Jack Jaguar. He returns Gazelle to hand to Special Summon Salamangreat Falco from the graveyard and Xyz Summons Abyss Dweller with JackJaguar and Falco. He sets Salamangreat Roar and ends turn.
Demarco draws for turn but Josh immediately activates Abyss Dweller as well as Special Summoning Gazelle from hand and sending Salamangreat Rage to the Graveyard from his Deck. Demarco calls monster and successfully Summons SPYRAL Agent from hand but opts to not use the effect. He Normal Summons Orcust Cymbal Skeleton and Link Summons Galatea, the Orcust Automaton and Xyz summons Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star. Demarco uses its effect to send a card but Josh negates it with Salamangreat Roar. Dingirsu detaches Galatea but is not destroyed. Dingirsu attacks over Abyss Dweller allowing Salamangreat Falco to set Salamangreat Will and then Demarco passes after setting a card. Josh draws and returns Salamangreat Heatleo to summon Salamangreat Jack Jaguar and Link Summons Heatleo with Heatleo return Demarcos set card back to his deck. Next he uses Heatleo to target the Sea Archiver in his graveyard to change Dingirsu’s attack to 300. Demarco decides it’s not worth continuing and packs it up for game 2.
Demarco decides he would like to go second this game. Josh opens 2 copies of Cynet Mining, Salamngreat Spinny, Flame Bufferlo and Salamangreat Rage. He activates a Cynet Mining discarding Salamangreat Rage to add Salamangreat Gazelle to hand. He summons Flame Bufferlo and Link Summons Salamangreat Balelynx activating both monsters’ effects. He adds Salamangreat Sanctuary to hand before discarding Salamangreat Spinny to draw Pot of Desires and Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay. He now summons Gazelle from hand and sends Salamangreat Roar to the graveyard. Salamangreat Spinny summons from the Graveyard and overlays with Gazelle for Salamangreat Miragestallio and uses it to summon Salamangreat Jack Jaguar. Before it goes out of control, Demarco activates Nibiru the Primal Being tributing all monsters on the field to summon itself and a Token to Josh’s Field. Josh is displeased but he activates Pot of Desires and ends his turn in frustration.
Demarco draws and Sets a card before activating Danger!? Nessie, discarding SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue to Summon itself and Draw a card. He activates Foolish Burial to send SPYRAL Quik-Fix. He banishes the discarded Rescue to summon back the Quik-Fix but the effect is negated by Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Demarco successfully calls monster to summon SPYRAL Super Agent and Link Summons SPYRAL Double Helix using the two SPYRAL monsters allowing Josh to Special Summon his Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay. Demarco then discards a SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue to Special Summon Quik-Fix and asks his opponent if he would like to do anything now that 5 monsters have been Summoned this turn. Josh says he would not and Demarco Link Summons using Double Helix and Nessie into Knightmare Unicorn and discards SPYRAL Master Plan to remove the Token from play. He Link Summons into Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess with Knightmare Unicorn and Nibiru. He then Banishes SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue to Summon back Master Plan allowing Josh to summon a Sea Archiver from hand. Demarco makes Barricadeborg Blocker with Master Plan and Quik-Fix. Demarco uses Master Plan to add SPYRAL Resort and SPYRAL Sleeper and then uses the Resort to find a SPYRAL GEAR – Last Resort. He uses Barricadeborg Blocker to Discard another SPYRAL MISSION – Rescue and banishes it to summon back SPYRAL Double Helix. He Link Summons using his Apollousa, Barricadeborg Blocker and Double Helix into Borrelsword Dragon. He Special Summons SPYRAL SLEEPER from hand and equips SPYRAL GEAR – Last Resort. He attempts to uses SPYRAL Sleeper to destroy Josh’s monsters but Josh discards Nibiru the Primal Being to negate the effect using his Phantazmay. Demarco attacks over Josh’s 2 monsters with Sleeper and Borrelsword Dragon and then directly with Borrelswords second attack.
Josh draws and activates Cynet Mining discarding Flame Bufferlo to add Salamangreat Foxy to hand. He normal summons Foxy which reveals a Salamangreat Circle, an Infinite Impermanence and a Salamangreat Fowl and declares he will add Circle and use it to add the Fowl. Josh then Link Summons Balelynx and Special Summons the Fowl. He summons Salamangreat Jack Jaguar by returning Salamangreat Miragestallio to the deck. Josh Link Summons using Jack Jaguar and Balelynx into Salamangreat Sunlight Wolf and activates a Salamangreat Sanctuary. He summons Salamangreat Spinny back from the graveyard and Link Summons his 3 monsters into Salamangreat Pyro Phoenix. Demarco looks worried and picks up the card to read it. Demarco uses SPYRAL Sleeper to attempt to destroy Salamangreat Sanctuary but Josh will protect it with Salamangreat Balelynx effect from the graveyard. Using Sanctuary Josh can summon another Pyro Phoenix which destroys all of Demarcos cards except the Sleeper which is protected by Last Resort. Salamangreat Roar then sets itself. Pyro Phoenix attacks over the Defense Position Sleeper and then Josh ends his turn.
Demarco draws a card and attempts to summon SPYRAL Super Agent but Josh uses Salamangreat Roar to negate it. Demarco sets a monster and ends his turn. Josh returns a Salamangreat Pyro Phoenix from the Graveyard to Summon Salamangreat Jack Jaguar then summons back that Pyro Phoenix from Salamangreat Sanctuary destroying Demarco’s set monster. He summons back Salamangreat Spinny from the Graveyard. He declares an attack with all 3 monsters and then uses Pyro Phoenix to Special Summon back Demarco’s Borrelsword Dragon to Demarco’s field and inflict 3000 damage to Demarco. Demarco is still blown away by what happened and read Pyro Phoenix again to figure out what just happened. When he finally gets a grasp of what happened he extends a friendly handshake.
Josh moves on at 7-1 while Demarco is at 6-2 and the bubble!Back to all news
