Round 8 Feature Match – Harley Mangan (Madolche) vs Dennis Ling (Burning Abyss)

14.12.2014 | 1:52 |

Welcome to Day 2 of YCS Sydney! The first round of the day pits 2 of the top Duelists in the tournament against each other. Harley Mangan has a 6-1 record at the start of Day 2, using one of the few Madolche Decks here at Sydney with great success. Dennis Ling on the other hand has found his success with the popular and powerful Burning Abyss Deck. Will the highly represented strategy come through in the end, or will Harley’s rogue pick cause the Match to end in his favour?

Game 1

Dennis won the die roll and elected to go first. His hand contained [allure], [botend], [pwwb], [ba scarm] and [bls]. He played [allure], and banished [ba scarm] from his hand. He then Set 2 cards to his backrow and passed the turn.

Harley opened with [mad mess], 2 [a sanc], [mad ticket], and [lance]. He drew [engelee], activated Ticket, and Normal Summoned Anjelly. He Tributed it to Special Summon [mad hoot] from his Deck. Then, he banished Anjelly to Special Summon [mad mess] from his Deck and add [mad chat] to his hand with Messengelato’s effect. He activated Chateau, then attacked with both of his monsters (Dennis 8000 > 3900). In Main Phase 2, he Set 2 cards and ended the turn.

Dennis drew a card. He Set 1 card and ended his turn.

Harley drew and Normal Summoned [mad magi]! He added [engelee] to his hand with its effect. He proceeded to his Battle Phase and attacked with Magileine, and Dennis used [pwwb] discarding [fire lake] to return [mad mess] to the top of Harley’s Deck. [mad ticket] allowed Harley to add [mad miau] to his hand. Magileine attacked directly, but when [mad hoot] attacked, a second [pwwb] sent it packing (Dennis 3900 > 2000). Harley ended his turn.

Dennis drew a card, Set a monster, Set 1 to his backrow and passed the turn.

Harley drew a card, then Normal Summoned [mad miau] and Special Summoned [engelee], and with that Dennis conceded!

In the first Duel, Harley took advantage of Dennis’ poor opening with some quick Madolche combos, but will that be enough to take out the whole Match?

Game 2

Dennis wished to go first. His opening hand contained [tour], [m fiend], [mst], [rubic], and [fire lake]. He Normal Summoned [tour] and Special Summoned [ba graff] from his Deck. Then, he Xyz Summoned [dante] in Attack Position, and detached Graff to send [ba cir], [vane] and [ba scarm] to the Graveyard. Graff Special Summoned [ba cir] from the Deck, and the yarded Cir Special Summoned Graff from the Graveyard. He Xyz Summoned a second [dante], and Set 2 cards after that. He then added [ba graff] to his hand during the End Phase of the turn with Scarm’s effect.

Harley started with [vane], [mad hoot], [mad miau], [mad magi], and [ced]. He drew a card, then Normal Summoned Magileine to add [engelee] to his hand. He Set 2 to end his turn, but Dennis used [fire lake] during the End Phase to destroy all 3 of Harley’s cards! The 2 [dante] that were sent by Fire Lake returned [fire lake] and [ba scarm] to his hand, while the [ba cir] and [ba graff] Special Summoned Graff and Scarm respectively. Magileine shuffled herself into the Deck. Harley then ended his turn.

Dennis drew a card, then Xyz Summoned his third [dante], and detached [ba graff] to send [rubic], and 2 [m fiend]s to the Graveyard. Graff Special Summoned [ba cir] from the Deck. He then Tributed Cir to Normal Summon his final copy of [m fiend]! Both monsters attacked directly (Harley 8000 > 3100). He then Set 2 cards and passed his turn.

YourMajesty

Majesty’s Fiend is a serious problem for Madolche Decks!

Harley drew a card, and conceded, unable to use his monster effects to get back into the game!

It’s 1-1 at this stage, and the stakes are very high in this final Duel, which may mean the difference between reaching the Top 32 or just falling short. Which Duelist will go ahead in a comfortable position to make it all the way?

Game 3

After some minor Side Decking, the Duelists are ready to begin the final Duel. Harley chose to take the first turn. His opening hand was [trap stun], [mad chat], 2 [mad ticket], and [wire tap]. He Set 3 of them and passed the turn.

Dennis began with Calcab, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, [ba cir], ba scarm], [ba graff], and [maxx]. He drew a card, then Special Summond Calcab, then Normal Summoned Scarm. He then Xyz Summoned [dante], and detached Scarm to send [twister], [mst] and [m fiend] to the Graveyard. Dante then attacked directly (Harley 8000 > 5500). In Main Phase 2, he then Xyz Summoned [downerd] using Dante as Xyz Material. In the End Phase, Scarm added [tour] to Dennis’ hand.

Harley drew [engelee]! He Normal Summoned it and activated his face-down [mad ticket]. He then Tributed Anjelly with her effect, but Dennis used his [maxx] to draw a card when Harley Special Summoned [mad hoot] from his Deck. He then activated [mad chat], returning Anjelly to the Deck, which allowed him to add another Anjelly back to his hand with Ticket’s effect. He then ended his turn.

Dennis drew a card, then Normal Summoned [tour] Summoning [ba cir] in Defence Position from his Deck. He then Xyz Summoned [dante] and detached Cir to send [night beam], [mst] and [maxx] to the Graveyard. Cir Special Summoned [ba scarm] from the Graveyard, but it was sent to the Graveyard immediately as Dennis controlled [downerd]. In his Battle Phase, Downerd attacked [mad hoot], but it wasn’t destroyed by battle thanks to [engelee]’s effect (Harley 5500 > 5000). Dennis detached Calcab, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, which returned Harley’s Set [mad ticket] to his hand. Since it was face-down, this didn’t trigger the face-up Ticket’s effect. Dante attacked Hootcake as well, then switched itself to Defence Position (Harley 5000 > 4500). Dennis then Xyz Summoned a second Downerd in his Main Phase 2, and added [tour] to his hand with Scarm’s effect in the End Phase.

Harley drew a card. He Normal Summoned [engelee], but Dennis used a second [maxx] when Harley used its effect! He Summoned [mad mess] from his Deck and Dennis drew a card. Messengelato added [mad chat] to Harley’s hand. He then used [mad hoot]’s effect, banishing Anjelly to Summon a second Messengelato, which added [mad pal] to Harley’s hand. Dennis drew a second card from [maxx]. Harley then activated Chateau, sending his first Chateau to the Graveyard. After that, he Xyz Summoned [tiramisu] with both Messengelatos, and detached of them to return it to the hand and the Chateau in the Graveyard to the Deck. Then, he returned both of Dennis’ [downerd]s to the Deck! [mad ticket] added another Anjelly to Harley’s hand, and the two copies of [dante] that were sent to the Graveyard added Calcab, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and [ba scarm] to Dennis’ hand. In the Battle Phase, Harley attacked with Hootcake and Tiaramisu (Dennis 8000 > 3300). After that, he Set 1 card and passed the turn, after shuffling Hootcake into the Deck in the End Phase.

Dennis drew [pwwb] to start his turn. He tried to Special Summon [ba alich], but Harley activated [vane]. Dennis chained [twister] so that his Alich would be Summoned successfully (3300 > 2800)! He then Normal Summoned [ba graff] to Xyz Summon [dante], and detached Graff to send [pwwb], [rai] and [ba scarm] to the Graveyard. Graff Special Summoned [rubic] from the Deck, and Dennis Special Summoned Calcab, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his hand. He then Synchro Summoned [virgil] and used its effect, discarding [ba cir] to shuffle [tiramisu] into the Extra Deck. The discarded Cir Special Summoned [dante] from the Graveyard. In the Battle Phase, the new Dante and Virgil attacked directly (4500 > 1000). The powerful Dante attacked, but Harley played his last defence: [mad pal]! He Special Summoned [engelee] from his hand in Defence Position. Dante destroyed it, and the Anjelly returned to the hand (thanks to [mad chat]), and his [mad ticket] netted him another free Anjelly. In Main Phase 2, Dennis Set 4 cards to end his turn, while adding [ba cir] from his Deck to his hand thanks to Scarm’s effect.

Burning Abyss Decks can usually build up their field very quickly, and this turn was no exception!

Harley drew [a sanc]. He Normal Summoned [engelee], but Dennis used [pwwb]! He discarded [ba cir] to target Anjelly, but Harley used [trap stun] to negate it. Dennis then chained [fire lake], sending his 2 [dante] to the Graveyard to target Anjelly, [mad chat], and Harley’s Set card. But Harley chained it: it was a [wire tap]! Harley won that chain, negating the [fire lake] and the [pwwb], leaving his Anjelly in play. The discarded Cir Special Summoned a Dante from the Graveyard, and the two Dantes sent to the Graveyard returned [rubic] and [ba cir] to Dennis’ hand. Harley Tributed Anjelly to Special Summon [mad hoot] from his Deck, which banished the Anjelly to Special Summon[mad mess] from the Deck. That added another Chateau to Harley’s hand. He then activated Chateau, returning Messengelato to the Deck, and adding another Anjelly to his hand. He Set 2 cards to end his turn.

Dennis drew a card, then used [virgil]’ effect, discarding [ba cir] to shuffle Harley’s face-down card into the Deck. Harley chained that face-down in response: [a sanc]! He Summoned [a mora] from the Deck, and shuffled Sanctum back in. Moralltach’s effect destroyed Virgil, which netted Dennis a card. He then activated [pwwb], discarding [rubic] to return Harley’s Set [mad ticket] to the top of the Deck. He then Normal Summoned [tour], Xyz Summoned Number 47: Nightmare Shark, and Harley offered the handshake!

Dennis Ling wins the match 2 to 1 with his Burning Abyss Deck!
