Round 8 Feature Match: Lukas Prinz vs. Mike Bittrich

We’ve made it! 7 rounds have already been played, so only 1 more to go! We decided to invite the players from table 6 to our table, mainly because one of them was running an intriguing Zombies deck. The player’s name is Lukas Prinz and he has to overcome his good friend Mike Bittrich.

Both players know each other [dash] that includes the respective decks they’re playing [dash] inside out; they even share a room in the same hotel this weekend. Prinz won the die roll and opted to go first. The first little advantage in a battle of friends.

[duality] revealed [mst] and 2 monsters. Prinz wasted no time, picking [mst], commenting it with a “I heard that card is good against your deck!”, with a smile on his face. He Set a monster.

Bittrich had a [mst] of his own, destroying the face-down [mst] of Prinz. [ravine] came down, [phalanx] was discarded to search [dux] from his deck, he played it, did the combo and suddenly had [vaja] on his field! He comboed once more ([vaja]'[s] effect brings back [phalanx], he uses its effect to unequip it and then Tunes both monsters), resulting in [sdd] on his side of the field. He attacked into [pyramid], which [ss]ed [goblin zombie], he Set 2 spells or traps and passed.

Prinz only Set a Monster Card and ended his turn.

Bittrich had another [phalanx] for [dux], he brought out [vaja], then he did the combo we already described once more, which left him with [rda]. He attacked over [goblin zombie], destroying both of Prinz’ monsters and [sdd] took a big hit at Prinz’ Life Points.

Play was back to Prinz. He [ns]ed [zombie master], discarded [plague] to bring back another Zombie, however, Bittrich discarded [veiler]! Prinz wasn’t out of options, however, as he [ss]ed [dad]. [mind control] for [sdd] followed, making sure the Synchro Monster would turn against his former master. After that, [dad] went on a killing spree, destroying all the cards in Bittrich’s back row! [brionac] came out as Prinz used [plague]'[s] effect to return it to the field, where it was then Tuned to [zombie master]. [mezuki] (which was discarded for another effect that I guess I have missed) used its effect to return [zombie master] to the field, [bftdd] then returned a bunch of monsters back to Prinz’ Graveyard and after some more combos, his field looked like this:

The Zombies made sure none of Prinz' monsters stayed in his Grave - or Extra Deck!

Lukas Prinz takes the first Duel with a flurry of Special Summons!

Talk about explosive! The Zombie Deck performed more than 5 Summons in that very last turn, flooding the field with a bunch of Synchro Monsters! With more than 8000 ATK on the field, it was merely a matter of form for Prinz to claim the win.

On to the next one! This time, Bittrich wanted to go first. His opening 6 featured only 1 monster: [veiler]. That was about to change in an instant! He discarded [terraforming] for [ravine], activated the Field Spell, discarded [veiler] to search for [phalanx], [coc] follwed, he drew into [dux], Summoned it, brought back [phalanx], he did the [vaja] combo and after some [ss]s, he had [sdd] on the field! He Set 2 spells or traps and passed his turn.

Prinz seemed to be nonplussed. He [ns]ed [rai oh]. Next in line was [reborn], targeting [phalanx]. The Dragunity was Tuned together with [rai oh] to [brionac], however, Bittrich activated [sj]! Prinz Set 4 spells or traps and passed.

Play was back to Bittrich, who [ns]ed [dux]. He equipped it with [phalanx] and then opted to attack with both of his monsters. After dealing 3600 points of damage, he entered his Main Phase 2. After giving it some thought, he opted to not perform any more actions.

Prinz drew into [allure]. He removed [caius] from play, Summoned [gale], used its effect on [sdd] and declared an attack. It wasn’t meant to be, as Bittrich flipped [mf]!

Bittrich now used the second effect of [ravine] to fill his Graveyard with [phalanx]. He [ss]ed the [phalanx] that was equipped to [dux] with its own effect and then Tuned both of his Dragunities to [vaja]. Prinz activated [ro] [dash] a strong answer ([sdd] couldn’t be used against it)!
Bittrich wasn’t finished, however. He [ns]ed [legionnaire], equipped it with [phalanx], [ss]ed the equipped monster, but [chain disappearance] removed it from game! Attacks followed, leaving Prinz with only 350 Life Points!

Prinz drew into his next card, thought for a moment, but eventually admitted that he wouldn’t be able to turn the game around at this point.

Mike Bittrich equals the score!

Mike Bittrich clearly dominated the second Duel! Thanks to a very aggressive start and strong follow-up plays, he never gave Prinz a chance to gain any ground. With the help of his versatile Dragunity combos, he can easily [ss] big threats to the field, stopping the Zombies dead in their tracks.

The last Duel of the day and Prinz opted to go first. Let’s take a look at his opening hand:

[rai oh] in front of 3 spells or traps were Prinz’ opening. Bittrich activated [hole], then [terraforming] and he followed it up with [ravine]. He activated the effect of the Field Spell Card, discarding [aklys] for [legionnaire]. Prinz could do nothing but watch in amazement. Bittrich set 2 Spell or Trap Cards and ended.

A second [rai oh] was met with [warning]. Prinz flipped [sj], committing half his Life Points to make sure his monster would hit the field! He attacked directly and passed.

Bittrich tried to gain some ground, Summoning [legionnaire]. Prinz was quick to use [veiler] to negate its effects, turning it into a vanilla card. Bittrich had to pass.

Prinz’ [rai oh] stomped over [legionnaire]. Play was back to Bittrich.

He simply Set a monster.

[rai oh] attacked over [veiler].

Bittrich simply passed after setting a spell or trap.

Prinz attacked once more with [rai oh], but [mf] finally destroyed the beatstick. Prinz was done with his turn.

Bittrich discarded [poa] for [ravine] to search his deck for another Dragunity. He Summoned it, but [bth] removed it from the field!

Prinz only Set a spell or trap.

Bittrich used the effect of [ravine] once more, but Prinz Chained [mst]! Bittrich had to pass.

[duality] got Prinz [reaper]. He Summoned the little Zombie to the field, but [sj] destroyed it. He activated [bol] to bring it right back (this all happened very fast and no one caught the misplay in the heat of the battle [dash] [bol] couldn’t be activated, thanks of [duality]). [reaper] took a shot to the heart, leaving Bittrich with only 1 card in his hand.

Bittrich activated [mst] in his next turn and play was back to Prinz.

[reaper] took another shot!

Bittrich only Set a spell or trap.

Prinz Tributed [reaper], Summoning [caius]. However, it fell victim to [bth]. [reborn] came down next, but a second [bth] removed [rai oh] as well!

Back to Bittrich, who only Set a monster.

Prinz Set a monster, too.

[mole] was Summoned on Bittrich’s side of the field, but it was met with [chain disappearance]. Bittrich had to pass.

Prinz Tributed his Set [pyramid] for [caius]. He removed Bittrich’s last monster from game, attacked directly and Bittrich revealed [mst] [dash] nothing that could stop the attack, which meant game for Zombies!

Lukas Prinz continues his winning streak and wins the Match!

The Zombies really pulled it of! [reaper], [bol] to bring it back and [mst] for [ravine] were the most important cards that allowed Prinz to claim the win in this interesting Duel! We’ll take a closer look at his deck and do a Deck Feature!
