Round 8: Floris van Asch (T.G. Agents) vs. Jordan Ruff (Offering Gadget)

17.12.2011 | 21:01 |

[p]It’s the last round of the first day and we invited Floris van Asch to our table. Apparently it’s his first YCS, but he’s still on an impressive 6 – 1 record. Facing him is Jordan Ruff who you might remember from his Round 5 Feature Match.
[/p][p]
Ruff felt a lot of pressure as he lost his first Feature Match. He won the die roll and opted to go first.

[nbsp][p]
[diva] came out first and Ruff [ss]ed the second copy. “That’s exactly what I did in my first feature!”, he announced. Both monsters were used to Xyz Summon [ggg], he set 4 Spells or Traps and passed for his turn.
[/p][nbsp]
Quite the hand for van Asch!

[nbsp]
[venus] was sent back to van Asch’s Deck after Ruff flipped [dustshoot]. After van Asch set a card to each zone, play was back to Ruff.
[/p][p]
He added [red] to his hand with [duality]. Van Asch expected [offering], but Ruff disappointed him. He had [macro], however, [ns]ed [red] and attacked over the set [striker] which got banished. Van Asch didn’t seem to happy; this Duel didn’t go his way.
[/p][p]
In his following turn, he used [bom] on [ggg] and he followed it up with [hole]. [road] made sure the Spell couldn’t wipe Ruff’s field and [sdd] came out from his Extra Deck! [striker] came down and [msb] followed, which got van Asch a [ggg] of his own.
[/p][p]
Ruff Tribute Summoned [caius] and this cleared the way for his following attacks. After the dust had settled, van Asch was left with only 1400 Life Points!
[/p][nbsp]
Ruff found a way to strip van Asch of all defenses!

[nbsp][p]
Van Asch drew for his turn and checked his options, but he quickly came to the conclusion that there was nothing he could do to turn this game around.

[nbsp][p]
His mood all cheery all of a sudden, Ruff went for his Side Deck. Van Asch felt a little beaten down after feeling like he hadn’t had a chance to fight back in the first Duel – Ruff simply had all the answers. Hopefully for the young Duelist, his Side Deck would help him to find some more answers.

[nbsp][p]
[rai oh] marked van Asch’s opening and he followed it up with a face-down Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Ruff used [ground] to destroy [rai oh], he [ns]ed [green] and this got him [red]. He attacked for 1400 and passed after setting a Spell or Trap. [decree] during the End Phase would shut down the card in case it was a Trap!
[/p][p]
In his following turn, van Asch brought out [venus]. He paid 500 Life Points twice to bring out 2 copies of [msb]. These were then used to Xyz Summon [ggg] to the field. [venus] attacked over [green], van Asch set a Spell or Trap and it was back to Ruff.
[/p][nbsp]
Ruff's Pot of Duality gave him some options!

[nbsp][p]
[duality] got Ruff [caius]. He activated [hole], which caused [ggg] to lose one of his attached Xyz Materials and [venus] to bite the dust. He also Summoned [dck] and passed for his turn.
[/p][p]
Van Asch started his next turn with [mst], destroying [warning]. He brought out [hyperion] and attacked over [dck], which caused Ruff to lose 800 Life Points.
[/p][p]
Back to Ruff, who checked van Asch’s [grave] first. He set a card to each zone and play was right back to van Asch.
[/p][p]
[hyperion]'[s] effect got rid of the set [red]. [earth] was [ns]ed and van Asch searched his Deck for [jupiter]. Attacks followed and that left Ruff with 2100 Life Points.
[/p][p]
Another [duality] got Ruff [leeching]. He was rather happy with this card. He [ns]ed [green] and added [red] to his hand. [leeching] was activated next and [green] tried to attack over [hyperion]. [honest] came down during the Damage Step and the Dutch crowd that watched the match on the big screen went into a frenzy! Ruff tried to come up with something, but couldn’t really find an answer!

[nbsp][p]
We would need one more Duel to decide a winner in this match. Both players were clearly dominating one of the 2 games, so let’s see who could gain the upper hand in the final Duel. Would it be Ruff with the advantage of going first on his side or could van Asch’s Side Deck tech help him to overcome the bad odds?
[/p][p]
Ruff started the Duel with [df] and a face-down Spell or Trap. Van Asch had 2 face-down Spells or Traps.

[nbsp][p]
[breaker] was [ns]ed on Ruff’s following turn and it got rid of [decree]. Ruff set another Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][p]
Van Asch now had [mst] for [df]. He then brought out [earth] and searched his Deck for [venus]. He passed after that.
[/p][p]
[breaker] attacked over [earth] and Ruff added another back row card to his field.
[/p][p]
[rai oh] tried to apply some pressure for van Asch, however, Ruff found [bth] in his back row! That concluded the turn.
[/p][p]
Another 1600 damage, courtesy of [breaker]. This card could very well be the deciding factor in this game! Ruff set a third Spell or Trap.
[/p][p]
Back to van Asch, who brought out [venus]. He used the effect, but Ruff chained [bth]. This meant that there was only [msb] on van Asch’s side of the field. It wasn’t meant to remain lonely, however, as [warwolf] was [ss]ed next. [reborn] brought back [earth], but Ruff wiped the field with [tt]! Van Asch [ss]ed [hyperion] and he used its effect to destroy [offering]. A direct attack followed and it caused Ruff to lose the first Life Points in this Duel!

[nbsp][p]
Another [breaker] came down for Ruff and he added 2 more cards to his Spell or Trap card zone.
[/p][p]
Van Asch briefly checked his [grave]. He was about to set a monster, but opted against it. He attacked with [hyperion], however, [bom] turned it face-down. He set another monster and play was back to Ruff.
[/p][p]
He asked for van Asch’s Life Points before Tributing [breaker] for [caius]. He banished [hyperion] and attacked into [msb]. That concluded the turn with Ruff holding onto 1 more card in his hand.
[/p][p]
[striker] was [ss]ed with its own effect and [jupiter] followed. Both were Tuned to [brionac]. Van Asch discarded [bom] to return the set Spell or Trap to Ruff’s hand. He used the effect once more on Ruff’s lonely monster. He [ss]ed [hyperion] and attacked with both monsters directly to leave Ruff with only 400 Life Points!
[/p][nbsp]
Suddenly with his back against the wall, Ruff tried to find an answer with Pot of Duality!

[nbsp][p]
Ruff found [duality] and saw [macro], [warning] and [tengu]. He thought for a short time before deciding to pick [tengu]. He set a Monster and 2 Spells or Traps and passed.
[/p][p]
Van Asch discarded [bls] to return Ruff’s monster to his hand! He switched [hyperion] to [def] and declared a direct attack. There was nothing Ruff could do to stop it…

[nbsp][p]
Quite the comeback from young Floris van Asch who will start the second day with an impressive 7 – 1 record! Asked about the key card in the final Duel, Ruff was quick to point out the second [hyperion] was rather back breaking for him!
