Round 8: Matt Goodridge (UK) vs Mustapha Motoi (Belgium)

We have made it to day two! Goodridge is from the UK and made the top eight at YCS Sheffield, Europe’s first sealed event, last year. Motoi is from here in Brussels and isn’t as happy with his pool today as he was yesterday – “on the first day my cards were way better” he said. Let’s see how much of a difference it would make!

Neither player wanted to use their re-draw so Goodridge started us off with [pod] revealing [lance], [bom] and [0 grav]. He decided the best option would be the Book and added it to his hand. He [ns]ed [uer]and set three to his backrow before passing.

Motoi [ss]ed [pho thrasher] and Goodridge responded by [ss]ing his [phad]. Thrasher attacked [uer] and [no entry] put everything in defence position. Motoi set a monster and activated [steelcage] before setting a [st] and passing.

Goodridge activated [cursed armaments] on Thrasher and set a monster, dropping his opponent’s monster to 300 attack. Motoi simply passed.

Goodridge added a [st] to his collection and passed back, and Steelcage met it’s end.

Motoi Flip Summoned [mpbh] and got some tokens. They were tributed for [dmoc] who retrieved Steelcage from the graveyard. Thrasher went to attack and in the Battle Phase, [dmoc] attacked Phantom Dragon and Book of Moon turned it face-down. Motoi had a brain freeze and sent Hamstrat to attack [uer], eating 400 damage for seemingly no reason. In [mp2] he activated Steelcage again and passed.

Goodridge switched Phantom Dragon to attack and passed.

[dmoc] was Flip Summoned and Motoi set a monster before passing, afraid to attack into a damage modifying Trap. Goodridge’s response was to set a backrow before passing – this took him to two and Armaments.

Motoi Flip Summoned [mataza] and gave it [unicorn]. [dmoc] attacked Phantom Dragon and found itself Banished as a result of [mow]. Mataza destroyed [uer] in battle and then [shockto], which had it’s effect activate. In [mp2] Mataza and Hamstrat were tributed for [svenus] and [unicorn] returned to the top of the Deck.

Seeing that DMoC out of play brings back memories. Horrible, horrible memories.

Goodridge activated [reborn] and revived his Shocktopus. He used it in a kamikaze move and attacked Venus, reducing it’s attack to 0 before attacking over it with [phad]. Motoi was on 5600 to Goodridge’s 6300.

Motoi drew and thought about his options. He switched Thrasher to defence and activated [prem] to revive [svenus]! He equipped it with [unicorn] to make it 3500 and sent it to attack the 1800 Phantom Dragon. Goodridge had [proar] though! He ate some damage but won the battle by 300, sending [unicorn] back to the top of Motoi’s Deck! He set his last card in hand, a monster, and passed with that, a backrow and Thrasher in defence.

Goodridge used [pod] and took [lance]. He Flip Summoned [ddd bot] and used it to attack the set [gyroid]. It wasn’t destroyed so Phantom Dragon finished the job. In [mp2] he [ns]ed [dck].

Motoi passed and on the next turn his field bit the dust – including an [apophis]. On the next turn it was all over as [a drago] with [unicorn] wasn’t enough to overcome [lance].

Both players kept their hands for the second game and Motoi started us off with [a drago] and two sets.

Back to the English Duelist who [ns]ed [shockto]. He sent it to attack the Dragonute and turned it down with [bom]. The Belgian attempted to play [b winds]…but was reminded it’s a Normal Spell Card. A bit awkward, but play continued nevertheless and Dragonute bit the dust.

Motoi [ss]ed [pho thrasher] and attacked the sea creature, activating it’s effect. Nothing more followed and Goodridge started his turn with [cguard], getting a counter and attacking through the Thrasher.

The hometown Duelist [ns]ed [evo ch], then, to Goodridge’s utter shock (there may have been sarcasm involved) flipped [b winds]. He entered the Battle Phase and attacked, with [d gate] from Goodridge saving his Guard. He ate some damage to the face but seemed content with the outcome.

The UK played [ns]ed [dck] and set a backrow before passing, taking him to two and the Gate.

Motoi had another [b winds] on the next turn, and send his Chevalier to attack over the Knight.

Goodridge ripped [pod] from the top and played it straight away revealing [coth], [coa] and [ranshin]. He thought carefully before picking Anubis and shuffling the others back.

He set a self-proclaimed mysterious [st] and passed.

Motoi [ns]ed [tsm] and sent it to attack the set [ddd bot]. The Belgian ate some damage and Goodridge tried to get him to attack with the Marauder again, to no avail.

Goodridge switched his Bot to attack and sent it in to battle with [evo ch]. He activated [no entry] and the attack forced through. In [mp2] Goodridge set a third backrow and passed. He was on 3600 to the Belgian’s 5800.

Motoi paid 800 of those LP to activate [prem], reviving [a drago]. Marauder went to attack and Dragonute was sent to destroy the Bot – failing thanks to [mow]. Goodridge went to his Battle Phase and attacked with [ddd bot], Marauder was destroyed.

Motoi flipped [apophis] and [stmf], putting up a wall. He tributed both of them for [svenus]! It declared an attack on the Bot and [coa] switched everything to defence. [steelcage] in [mp2] ended his turn.

Goodridge switched his Bot to defence and activated [grarl] on his Bot. Motoi passed.

The UK player used [pod] and took [d shield], as time was fast approaching. He set it and passed.

Motoi discarded [tricky] for another copy of [tricky]. Goodridge had a [phad]. The Tricky went to attack Bot, not realising that it remained at 1800 thanks to [grarl] while Venus reduced his Tricky to 1500!

Goodridge was 400 LP behind and needed to make it up as time was called on the round. He switched [phad] to attack and used [ffs], meaning the Dragon could destroy Venus and [ddd bot] could attack directly! That was the damage he needed, now he just needed to stay ahead.

The Fiend Megacyber is big, but not big enough to take out any of Goodridge's field!
The Fiend Megacyber is big, but not big enough to take out any of Goodridge's field!

[nbsp]
Motoi [ss]ed [megacyber] and set his last card in hand – a monster. He was pretty resigned to the fact that the game was pretty much over.

Phantom Dragon attacked over Megacyber and Bot went crashing into a set [bsg] – doing damage, but not quite enough to seal the draw! It was all over and Goodridge takes a game he was in full control of thanks to the end of time proceedure.

[h2]Matt Goodridge will be continuing on with a chance to make the top cut![/h2]
