Round 9: Darren O’Mara (Dragunity) vs Connor Green (Mermail)

Out of the top 20 tables here at YCS London, there is nothing I’d love to see more than a well played Mermail Deck and Connor Green can supply it! He faces off against Darren O’Mara who is playing the mighty Dragunity Deck!
[br]
“It’s nice to have space over here!” says O’Mara, referring to the sheer amount of players who competed in yesterdays 7 rounds. He wins the dice roll and decides to go first.

[b]Game One[/b]

Dragons Unite!

[br]
O’Mara opens with [sarco] and banishes a [tempestd] from his Deck. [tempestd]’s effect activates getting a [phalanx] from his Deck to his hand. Continuing with his Deck searching he activates [terraforming] to bring a [ravine] from his Deck to his hand. He activates [consonance] discarding his newly found [phalanx] and draws two cards. The atmosphere gets a little rocky as [ravine] comes into play, as a [redox] is discarded to get [dux] to hand. He then Normal Summons [dux] equipping [phalanx] to [dux]. [phalanx] then returns to the field and O’Mara Synchro summons [vajrayana]. [vajrayana] attaches [phalanx] to herself, [phalanx] allowing themselves to return to the field. “Get your copy and paste ready coverage guy!” remarks Green. O’Mara loves Synchro Summoning and brings out [stardust]! O’Mara sets three cards and ends his first turn.
[br]
[a ocea] is Green’s first play, who targets herself to Special Summon [linde]. [linde] attacks the [stardust] to destroy herself. Her effect activates and [pike] is Special Summoned. Not wanting to see her gone for long [pike]’s effect discards [tidal] and brings [linde] back to his hand. In [mp2] Green removes [tidal] for [a spirit], using [tidal]’s effect to bring a second [tidal] to his hand. Green plays big and Xyz Summons [bahamut], detaching a material to bring [atrite] to the field in Face-Up [def].
[br]
In O’Mara’s Standby Phase Green makes a smart [ced] on [stardust] sending him back to the Extra Deck. [upstart] then makes a cheeky appearance, followed by an activation of [ravine]’s effect that is stopped by a [mst] from Green. A new [ravine] soon takes its place though. O’Mara is desperate for cards and activates a [reckless]. [ravine] brings a [dux] to hand, and as Green said, a copy/paste of his previous move: He then Normal Summons [dux] equipping [phalanx] to [dux]. [phalanx] then returns to the field and O’Mara Synchro summons [vajrayana]. [vajrayana] attaches [phalanx] to herself, [phalanx] allowing themselves to return to the field. The difference this time; [crimson blader] enters the field! [crimson blader] attacks [bahamut], and O’Mara ends a very familiar turn.
[br]
Green Normal Summons his [linde] and attacks again to have her destroyed. Her effect brings a [pike] in DEF mode. The effect of [pike] discards [amark] bringing [sturge] to the field. [amark]’s effect destroys O’Mara’s set [pwwb] much to his dismay! [sturge]’s effect then sends [gunde] to the Graveyard, allowing [linde] to return to his hand. He Xyz Summons into [ddw] who is slapped in the face with a [bom]. Green ends his turn, plans thwarted.
[br]
At this point [sarco] activates, and [tidal] returns to O’Mara’s hand. [ravine] discards [tidal] to bring [dux] to hand, and again the fantastic combo with [vajrayana] takes place, allowing O’Mara to Synchro Summon [scrap dragon] and use his effect to destroy the now [fd] [ddw]. A [mind] is played, and winner is decided, O’Mara wins game one!
[br]
[b]Game Two[/b]
Down, but not out!
[br]
Green goes first this time with a defensive play of setting two [fd] [sts] and ending his turn.
[br]
A similar play to the first game, with [sarco] banishing [tempestd] and [terraforming] getting [ravine]. This time Green is ready for O’Mara, and the first [ravine] discards a [phalanx], only to be quashed by [twister]! O’Mara shrugs it off and plays an [upstart] and another [ravine], discarding [blaster], having this one stopped by [mst]!
[br]
Green plays [pike] and activates his effect discarding [pike], getting a [linde]. No other options available Green simply attacks directly and passes his turn.
[br]
O’Mara is now in the same situation and passes his turn.
[br]
“Why can’t I make my pushes?!” cries Green, annoyed at the lack of useful cards. He Normal Summons [a ocea], targeting [pike] and receiving a [gunde] from Deck and attacks with both directly. In [mp2] he Xyz Summons [mqangineer] and ends his turn.
[br]
[sarco] activates at this point, bringing [tempestd] to hand. [7ss] removes a [tempestd] and [tempestd]’s effect brings another [tempestd] to O’Mara’s hand. He activates his THIRD [ravine] and discards [tempestd] to get [dux] to hand. [dux] is Normal Summoned, and this time a [maxx] is discarded! The effect [dux] gets [phalanx] and [phalanx] brings himself to the field. This time [htspsy] is Synchro Summoned and his effect removes himself and [mqangineer] from play! O’Mara sets one [fd] [st] and ends turn.
[br]
Green thinks he can win this turn and Normal Summons [pike] using his effect to discard [linde] and get [gunde] to hand. He reveals two Mermail Monsters from hand and Special Summons [megalo]! [megalo]’s effect allows him to get [a sphere] to hand. He Special Summons [gunde] and attempts an attack but is stopped by [scarecrow]! He sets one [fd] [st] and passes.
[br]
O’Mara makes a similar play to before, copy and paste at the ready, I was ready for him. He Normal Summons [dux] equipping [phalanx] to [dux]. [phalanx] then returns to the field and O’Mara Synchro summons [vajrayana]. [vajrayana] attaches [phalanx] to herself, [phalanx] allowing themselves to return to the field and then Synchro Summons [crimson blader]! He attacks [pike], sets one [fd] [st] and uses [blaster]’s effect removing [tempest] and [vajrayana] from play to Special Summon Blaster. [tempestd]’s effect allows him to bring another [tempestd] to hand and he ends his turn, threat still at large, but with a plan. In his end phase Green activates [a sphere] and brings [leed] into play.
[br]
Green has had enough and attempts to Xyz Summon into [big], but is stopped when [ced] sends [big] back to his Extra Deck. Thinking fast he discards an [electric virus] and takes control of [blaster]. [blaster] attacks [crimson blader] destroying them both and Green ends disappointed.
[br]
O’Mara wants the game to end on time, and so uses his killer combo of discarding [phalanx] to get [dux] and repeat his previous winning move to get [scrap dragon], this time he also uses [tempestd] and [blaster]’s effect to Special Summon them both and uses a [pwwb] to clear the field and attack for game!
[br]
[b]Darren O’Mara Wins 2-0[/b]
