Semi Finals: Fabian Renner (Inzektors) vs. Ioannis Mourelatos (Inzektors)

[p]We’re down to 4 Duelist, playing 3 different Decks and coming from 3 different nations. 2 of them, Ioannis Mourelatos from Greece and Fabian Renner from Germany, both running Inzektors, will now try to advance to the finals! There they’ll either meet Dutch Champion Stephan Sluis or the other German player still in competition, Konrad Grünewald.[br]
Both are trying very different takes on the popular archetype, so we’re curious to see how this will play out.

Lady luck seemed to be on Renner’s side, at least for the time being. He won the die roll and opted to go first.

He Set a card to each zone and ended.
[/p][p]
Mourelatos [ns]ed [i pede], he equipped it with [i hop] from his hand, detached it and searched his Deck for [i sword]. He used [duality] to add [dustshoot] to his hand, equipped [i hop] with [i sword] and attacked directly. He Set 3 Spells or Traps and that concluded his turn.
[/p][p]
Renner drew and Mourelatos was quick to activate [dustshoot] after asking if Renner wanted to perform an action in his Draw Phase. He saw [i fly], [maxx], 2 [i hornet] and [i mantis]. [i fly] was sent back to Renner’s Deck. [i hornet] was [ns]ed and after it activated its effect, Mourelatos used [bom] to flip it face-down. Renner checked Mourelatos’s Graveyard before passing his turn.

The Greek Duelist drew and went up to 2 cards in his hand. He used [i pede]'[s] effect, equipping it with [i hop] from his Graveyard. He unequipped it right away again and searched his Deck for [i fly]. It became obvious what he meant when he said his Deck was extremely consistent.[br]
He did some quick calculations and activated [duality], revealing 2 [maxx] and [lance]. He picked the Quick-Play Spell, shuffled both monsters back in and declared an attack with [i pede] into Renner’s face-down [i hornet]. He Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][p]
It seemed like Mourelatos was gaining ground, slowly but steadily. That was before Renner activated [hole], however, destroying all monsters on the field, including his own [sangan]. He searched his Deck for [i fly] while Mourelatos got [i pede] back thanks to the effect of his Equip Spell Card.[br]
[dad] was supposed to make an appearance, but [warning] negated that. [i fly] was [ns]ed next and this time the monster hit the field. [i hornet] was brought back from the Graveyard, but Mourelatos chained [lance]. That meant that [i fly] would sport a less exciting 200 ATK this turn. [i mantis] was used to equip [i fly] and [i hornet]'[s] effect destroyed it again. This got Renner 2 copies of [i pede] from his Deck.[br]
Renner now wanted to [ss] another Inzektor from his Deck, but Mourelatos explained that this was no longer possible. Renner would have needed to declare this when he first destroyed [i mantis] with [i hornet]'[s] effect. The judges checked all the effects involved and it turned out that Mourelatos was right. As [i fly]'[s] effect is optional, the player does actually have to declare he’s going to activate its effect at the same time that [i mantis]'[s] effect kicks in. Therefore, Renner was left with “only” 2 copies of [i pede] and [i fly] on the field.[br]
He equipped both [i pede] with [i hornet] and [i mantis] from his Graveyard. He used [i hornet] to destroy [i mantis] and activated the effects of both [i pede]'[s] as well as [i mantis]. He searched his Deck for 2 copies of [i mantis]. [i hornet] was [ss]ed thanks to the effect of the destroyed [i mantis]. Afterwards, it got equipped with an [i mantis] from Renner’s hand.

All Renner needed was an Xyz Summon!

Renner did some math and realized he had to bring out [20]. Mourelatos quickly checked the field and did some calculations of his own and both players then agreed that it would be enough damage to win the first game!
[/p][nbsp]

Fabian Renner wins the first Duel!

[nbsp][p]
It wasn’t easy to follow all those equipment-effects interacting with each other. [i mantis] can certainly cause some headaches, but if used right, it can win you games almost all on its own. At least that’s the impression Mourelatos was left with after the first game. He now had to pull out all the stops to start his comeback!
[/p][nbsp]

Ioannis Mourelatos had to step up his game to turn this match around!

The Greek Duelist Set a Spell or Trap and passed for his turn.
[/p][p]
[duality] revealed [fiendish], [i hornet] and [bom]. [i hornet] was added to Renner’s hand, he Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][p]
Mourelatos only Set another Spell or Trap. It was destroyed during the End Phase by Renner’s [mst] and turned out to be the very same card.
[/p][p]
Renner now [ns]ed [i hornet]. He used its effect to equip it with another copy from his hand, but [veiler] foiled that plan. Renner attacked, Set 2 and passed.
[/p][nbsp]
Lots of Effect Veiler's in this match!

[nbsp][p]
[i hornet]'[s] effect was activated, Mourelatos chained [crow] from his hand to banish [i hornet] in Renner’s Graveyard, but another [i hornet] came down from Renner’s hand! This allowed him to destroy [tt], he then equipped his monster with [i mantis], attacked directly, Set a second face-down Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][p]
Thanks to the third [i hornet], Mourelatos seemed like he was standing with his back against the wall. He used [reborn] to [ss] [i hornet] from Renner’s Graveyard, he activated the effect to equip it with an [i hornet] from his hand, but Renner chained [mst] to destroy it before [i hornet]'[s] own effect could be used to detach it. Mourelatos could do nothing but pass.
[/p][p]
Renner declared an attack, which helped him to claim back his [i hornet]. He Set a Spell or Trap and passed.
[/p][p]
Mourelatos activated [storm]! That worked and Renner lost his back row! That concluded his turn.
[/p][nbsp]
Once again, Renner was on the move!

[nbsp][p]
[i hornet] used its effect to equip itself with [i mantis] once again. [sangan] was [ns]ed and attacked. An attack with the impressive [i hornet] followed, which left Mourelatos with 1700 Life Points. Renner ended his turn.
[/p][p]
“Good luck!”, Renner declared when Mourelatos knocked on his hand, hoping for a card that could turn it all around. “Thank you”, Mourelatos replied, but then he revealed his hand: 2 Equip Spell Cards, another Spell and a Trap. No monster that could be used to start a flurry of Special Summons and destructive effects.
[/p][nbsp]

Fabian Renner advances to the finals!

[nbsp][p]
I asked Mourelatos if he would agree that the third copy of [i hornet] decided this game. “I really wasn’t expecting that, so yes”, Mourelatos said. “I drew into it that turn”, Renner said, rubbing it in. Mourelatos was obviously disappointed, but he still shook hands and wished his opponent all the best for the finals. There was no better way to leave the table and he was quickly welcomed by his friends who all congrulated him on the successful finish.
