Top 16: Besnik Kajtazi (Mermail) vs Florian Hofmann (Chain Burn)

Having made their way through the first of the single elimination rounds we work out way in to the top 16 portion of the event. Only four straight wins stand between one of the remaining Duelists and the title of YCS Champion, as well as an Ultra Rare copy of [106]! Our Feature Match sees Besnik Kajtazi and his Mermails take on the omnipresent threat of Chain Burn piloted by Florian Hofmann. Who will move on? Let’s find out!

A single roll of the dice decided that Hofmann would start and he Summoned [ccd]. It was stopped by [veiler] from Kajtazi who commented that he liked to stop [ccd] on the first turn like that. Hofmann went ahead and set three backrow cards and passed.

Kajtazi drew and was looking at a hand of two [gunde], [a linde], [pike] and [sturge]. He Summoned the Abysslinde and used it to attack [ccd]. Hofmann passed with no play.

Kajtazi attacked with [a linde] and Hofmann took the damage with a thumbs up. Play was back with him.

He brought his set cards to five before ending and Kajtazi, still unaware that he was playing against Chain Burn, commented that his opponent must have a bad hand.

[a linde] attacked and another thumbs up signalled 1500 more damage. Kajtazi passed unaware that every turn he waited gave Hofmann more and more options to deal direct damage.

Hofmann activated a chain of four: [just desserts], [ojama trio], [reckless] and [acc for]. It resolved successfully and Hofmann filled up his backrow to four before passing. He was on 4000 to Kajtazi’s 6000.

Chain Burn's been under the radar for a long time, could we see it make a comeback?

[nbsp]
Kajtazi Summoned [gunde] and entered his Battle Phase. He allowed an attack through from Abyssgunde but thought about the attack from Abysslinde before activating [dwall]. His [xyz] in [mp2] was [gt alucard] which attempted to pop a chained [legacy]. Before he could end his turn, Hofmann played a second [reckless] for some more cards. Kajtazi set one [st] before passing.

Hofmann set a card – revealed to be [secret barrel] when [mst] blasted it in the End Phase.

Alucard popped a chained [roar] on the following turn and Kajtazi Summoned [pike] discarding [sturge] to search out [a mark].

[1dop] was Hofmann’s only play – he could draw again on the following turn.

Kajtazi attacked on his following turn but dealt no damage and he passed shortly after.

[lava golem] replaced Kajtazi’s monsters and was [ss]ed in [def] to his side of the field. Hofmann set four.

In Kajtazi’s Standby Phase Hofmann chained to the effect of Golem with [roar], [jar of greed] and [acc for]. Kajtazi set a second backrow.

Hoffman filled up with all five and as he left his Main Phase [a sphere] cycled a [a linde] so that [pike] made an appearance, discarding [a mark] to search another and subsequently pop the freshly set [legacy].

Kajtazi drew and took 1000 damage from the [lava golem], after which Hofmann used a [just desserts] to finish the first game!

Both players siding with Hofmann choosing to use the ‘smokescreen’ option of shuffling all 15 Side Deck cards in to the main Deck and stripping 15 out.

Kajtazi would start the second game by setting a card to each zone and passing.

Hofmann only wanted to set one but was not allowed to keep it thanks to an End Phase [mst].

Kajtazi Summoned [pike] and discarded [a linde] to search a [a mark]. He flipped his [a linde] and attached with both monsters before passing.

[1dop] halted play and allowed Hofmann to simply pass with nothing on the field.

Kajtazi passed back leaving his two monsters in atk position. Hofmann responded by setting four.

His opponent discarded two copies of [a mark] to [ss] [a megalo]. He chained his [secret barrel] but couldn’t use the also targetted [chain strike] as there were two copies of [a mark] already on the chain. Abyssmegalo searched out an [a sphere] and Kajtazi studied his Extra Deck looking for inspiration. He Summoned [sturge] and pitched [a linde] to get a copy of Marksman back.

Abyssturge and Abysspike combined to make [lchain] which detached the Abysspike to send [tidal] from the Deck to the Graveyard. As Kajtazi attempted to go to battle [roar] prevented it. In [mp2] [tidal] made a reappearance and combined with [a megalo] to bring out [sack]. It sacrificed itself to destroy a set copy of [acc for] and Kajtazi set a card.

Hofmann simply drew and passed, accumulating cards and formulating a plan.

[tidal] returned once more and [scarecrow] kept Hofmann’s LP untouched. [a sphere] [ss]ed [a leed] which together with Tidal created [a gaios]. Another [st] ended the turn.

Hofmann set three and [a sphere] was destroyed.

[roar] prevented the next Battle Phase and [lchain] detached in [mp2] to send [ahi] to the Graveyard. A second set card ended the turn.

Hofmann had two backrow which he took to three – although the latest, a [jar of greed], was hit by [mst] in the End Phase. In the Battle Phase Hofmann used his last in-hand card, another [scarecrow], to stave off his doom a little longer.

He drew and flipped [reckless] in hope of drawing something to help him out. He found [ccd] which prompted the use of [a gaios]’ effect. [pod] was next and revealed [maxx], [acc for] and another [reckless]. Hofmann took the latter – knowing he would need the two cards it would provide (with no further drawback than he was already under). He set his remaining two cards and [a sphere] was flipped as he left his [mp] to get [pike] and use [a mark] to take out a newly set [acc for]. It explained why Hofmann had to think about his options from the Duality as if he could get off two copies of [acc for] he would draw a respectable amount of cards for his situation.

Kajtazi discarded [ahi] to [ss] [teus] and fish out a [gunde]. The Infantry popped [ccd] and Hofmann drew in to a [scarecrow] with his set [reckless] in the Battle Phase. Kajtazi was visibly annoyed and looked at the crowd in hope, drawing some laughs.

On his next turn Hofmann set a monster but it was in vain as the monster, a [maxx], could not save him on the following turn.

Hofmann would start things off in the third game with five minutes remaining on the round.

[ccd] was his play, followed by [pod] to reveal [just desserts], [jar of greed] and a second [ccd]. He almost took the Jar before putting it back, then deciding to stick with his instincts. He set three and used the effect of the [ccd] before passing.

Kajtazi’s first play was [diva] to get [a mark]. They were both used for the [synch] of [armades]. [roar] staved it off this turn and Kajtazi set three – two of which were removal.

On Hofmann’s turn [jar of greed] got him a [pod] to reveal [acc for], [chain strike] and [jar of greed]. He took the [chain strike] and shuffled the others back. [1dop] was his only play and Kajtazi passed straight back.

Hofmann flipped his [jar of greed] and set five cards methodically. Before his End Phase [a sphere] cycled [a linde] in to [pike] which discarded [a mark] to search [gunde] and destroy [acc for]. His [dust] and [mst] took out [roar] and [chain strike]. Time was called in the End Phase.

[a drag] was Summoned and Hofmann took attacks from all three monsters to leave him on 2300 LP. [mp2] saw [lchain] [xyz]ed and detach Abysspike to put [tidal] in the Graveyard.

He set a backrow and play was with Hoffman. [pod] saw [lava golem], [legacy] and [secret barrel] revealed. He studied his three hand cards before deciding the smart play was to take the Barrel as at this stage it was all about the damage. [jar of greed] was flipped as Hofmann started to realise the situation that he needed cards to take out LP and quickly. An End Phase [mst] randomly took out [secret barrel].

In Kajtazi’s Standby Phase Hofmann played [waboku]. [lchain] detached [a drag] to dump [a leed] in the Graveyard and Kajtazi passed. Hoffman set to four and flipped them all on the following turn: they included a [secret barrel] and [just desserts] but was nowhere near enough to claw back the required damage to win the game!
