Top 16: Besnik Kajtazi (Mermail) vs Florian Hofmann (Chain Burn)

23.02.2014 | 16:15 |
Having made their way through the first of the single elimination rounds we work out way in to the top 16 portion of the event. Only four straight wins stand between one of the remaining Duelists and the title of YCS Champion, as well as an Ultra Rare copy of Number 106: Giant Hand! Our Feature Match sees Besnik Kajtazi and his Mermails take on the omnipresent threat of Chain Burn piloted by Florian Hofmann. Who will move on? Let's find out! A single roll of the dice decided that Hofmann would start and he Summoned Cardcar D. It was stopped by Effect Veiler from Kajtazi who commented that he liked to stop Cardcar D on the first turn like that. Hofmann went ahead and set three backrow cards and passed.

Kajtazi drew and was looking at a hand of two Mermail Abyssgunde, Mermail Abysslinde, Mermail Abysspike and Mermail Abyssturge. He Summoned the Abysslinde and used it to attack Cardcar D. Hofmann passed with no play. Kajtazi attacked with Mermail Abysslinde and Hofmann took the damage with a thumbs up. Play was back with him. He brought his set cards to five before ending and Kajtazi, still unaware that he was playing against Chain Burn, commented that his opponent must have a bad hand. Mermail Abysslinde attacked and another thumbs up signalled 1500 more damage. Kajtazi passed unaware that every turn he waited gave Hofmann more and more options to deal direct damage. Hofmann activated a Chain of four: Just Desserts, Ojama Trio, Reckless Greed and Accumulated Fortune. It resolved successfully and Hofmann filled up his backrow to four before passing. He was on 4000 to Kajtazi's 6000.

Chain Burn's been under the radar for a long time, could we see it make a comeback?

Kajtazi Summoned Mermail Abyssgunde and entered his Battle Phase. He allowed an attack through from Abyssgunde but thought about the attack from Abysslinde before activating Dimension Wall. His Xyz Summon in Main Phase 2 was Ghostrick Alucard which attempted to pop a Chained Legacy of Yata-Garasu. Before he could end his turn, Hofmann played a second Reckless Greed for some more cards. Kajtazi set one Spell/Trap before passing. Hofmann set a card - revealed to be Secret Barrel when Mystical Space Typhoon blasted it in the End Phase. Alucard popped a Chained Threatening Roar on the following turn and Kajtazi Summoned Mermail Abysspike discarding Mermail Abyssturge to search out Atlantean Marksman. One Day of Peace was Hofmann's only play - he could draw again on the following turn. Kajtazi attacked on his following turn but dealt no damage and he passed shortly after. Lava Golem replaced Kajtazi's monsters and was Special Summoned in Defense Position to his side of the field. Hofmann set four.

In Kajtazi's Standby Phase Hofmann Chained to the effect of Golem with Threatening Roar, Jar of Greed and Accumulated Fortune. Kajtazi set a second backrow. Hoffman filled up with all five and as he left his Main Phase Abyss-Sphere cycled a Mermail Abysslinde so that Mermail Abysspike made an appearance, discarding Atlantean Marksman to search another and subsequently pop the freshly set Legacy of Yata-Garasu. Kajtazi drew and took 1000 damage from the Lava Golem, after which Hofmann used a Just Desserts to finish the first game!

Chain Burn unsurprisingly takes the first game and Mermails would need to stage a comeback!

Both players siding with Hofmann choosing to use the 'smokescreen' option of shuffling all 15 Side Deck cards in to the main Deck and stripping 15 out.

Hofmann smokescreened with 15 cards in and 15 out. They could be the same 15!

Kajtazi would start the second game by setting a card to each zone and passing. Hofmann only wanted to set one but was not allowed to keep it thanks to an End Phase Mystical Space Typhoon. Kajtazi Summoned Mermail Abysspike and discarded Mermail Abysslinde to search a Atlantean Marksman. He flipped his Mermail Abysslinde and attached with both monsters before passing. One Day of Peace halted play and allowed Hofmann to simply pass with nothing on the field.

Kajtazi passed back leaving his two monsters in atk position. Hofmann responded by setting four. His opponent discarded two copies of Atlantean Marksman to Special Summon Mermail Abyssmegalo. He Chained his Secret Barrel but couldn't use the also targetted Chain Strike as there were two copies of Atlantean Marksman already on the Chain. Abyssmegalo searched out an Abyss-Sphere and Kajtazi studied his Extra Deck looking for inspiration. He Summoned Mermail Abyssturge and pitched Mermail Abysslinde to get a copy of Marksman back. Abyssturge and Abysspike combined to make Lavalval Chain which detached the Abysspike to send Tidal, Dragon Ruler of Waterfalls from the Deck to the Graveyard. As Kajtazi attempted to go to battle Threatening Roar prevented it. In Main Phase 2 Tidal, Dragon Ruler of Waterfalls made a reappearance and combined with Mermail Abyssmegalo to bring out Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack. It sacrificed itself to destroy a set copy of Accumulated Fortune and Kajtazi set a card. Hofmann simply drew and passed, accumulating cards and formulating a plan. Tidal, Dragon Ruler of Waterfalls returned once more and Swift Scarecrow kept Hofmann's Life Points untouched. Abyss-Sphere Special Summoned Mermail Abyssleed which together with Tidal created Mermail Abyssgaios. Another Spell/Trap ended the turn. Hofmann set three and Abyss-Sphere was destroyed.

Threatening Roar prevented the next Battle Phase and Lavalval Chain detached in Main Phase 2 to send Atlantean Heavy Infantry to the Graveyard. A second set card ended the turn. Hofmann had two backrow which he took to three - although the latest, a Jar of Greed, was hit by Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase. In the Battle Phase Hofmann used his last in-hand card, another Swift Scarecrow, to stave off his doom a little longer. He drew and flipped Reckless Greed in hope of drawing something to help him out. He found Cardcar D which prompted the use of Mermail Abyssgaios' effect. Pot of Duality was next and revealed Maxx "C", Accumulated Fortune and another Reckless Greed. Hofmann took the latter - knowing he would need the two cards it would provide (with no further drawback than he was already under). He set his remaining two cards and Abyss-Sphere was flipped as he left his Main Phase to get Mermail Abysspike and use Atlantean Marksman to take out a newly set Accumulated Fortune. It explained why Hofmann had to think about his options from the Duality as if he could get off two copies of Accumulated Fortune he would draw a respectable amount of cards for his situation. Kajtazi discarded Atlantean Heavy Infantry to Special Summon Mermail Abyssteus and fish out a Mermail Abyssgunde. The Infantry popped Cardcar D and Hofmann drew in to a Swift Scarecrow with his set Reckless Greed in the Battle Phase. Kajtazi was visibly annoyed and looked at the crowd in hope, drawing some laughs.

This would force the match in to game three!

On his next turn Hofmann set a monster but it was in vain as the monster, a Maxx "C", could not save him on the following turn.

Mermails pull back game two with a large number of Marksman discards!

Hofmann would start things off in the third game with five minutes remaining on the round. Cardcar D was his play, followed by Pot of Duality to reveal Just Desserts, Jar of Greed and a second Cardcar D. He almost took the Jar before putting it back, then deciding to stick with his instincts. He set three and used the effect of the Cardcar D before passing. Kajtazi's first play was Deep Sea Diva to get Atlantean Marksman. They were both used for the Synchro Summon of Armades, Keeper of Boundaries. Threatening Roar staved it off this turn and Kajtazi set three - two of which were removal. On Hofmann's turn Jar of Greed got him a Pot of Duality to reveal Accumulated Fortune, Chain Strike and Jar of Greed. He took the Chain Strike and shuffled the others back. One Day of Peace was his only play and Kajtazi passed straight back. Hofmann flipped his Jar of Greed and set five cards methodically. Before his End Phase Abyss-Sphere cycled Mermail Abysslinde in to Mermail Abysspike which discarded Atlantean Marksman to search Mermail Abyssgunde and destroy Accumulated Fortune. His Dust Tornado and Mystical Space Typhoon took out Threatening Roar and Chain Strike. Time was called in the End Phase. Atlantean Dragoons was Summoned and Hofmann took attacks from all three monsters to leave him on 2300 Life Points. Main Phase 2 saw Lavalval Chain Xyz Summoned and detach Abysspike to put Tidal, Dragon Ruler of Waterfalls in the Graveyard.

He set a backrow and play was with Hoffman. Pot of Duality saw Lava Golem, Legacy of Yata-Garasu and Secret Barrel revealed. He studied his three hand cards before deciding the smart play was to take the Barrel as at this stage it was all about the damage. Jar of Greed was flipped as Hofmann started to realise the situation that he needed cards to take out Life Points and quickly. An End Phase Mystical Space Typhoon randomly took out Secret Barrel. In Kajtazi's Standby Phase Hofmann played Waboku. Lavalval Chain detached Atlantean Dragoons to dump Mermail Abyssleed in the Graveyard and Kajtazi passed. Hoffman set to four and flipped them all on the following turn: they included a Secret Barrel and Just Desserts but was nowhere near enough to claw back the required damage to win the game!
