Top 16 Feature Match: Alex Berlemon vs Kota Uenishi

We are only 4 rounds away from crowning a winner at YCS Sydney! Here in top 16 we have Alex Berlemon from Adelaide, the last standing Thunder Dragon player up against Japan’s Kota Uenishi and his Sky Striker Orcust deck. Kota has come a long way to play this tournament and he wants to be able to take home a trophy. Alex on the other hand made top cut last year but lost in Top 32 and this year wants to go as far as he can.

T16 Kota

Duel 1:

Kota wins the die roll and elects to go first. He opens a hand of 2 copies of Called by the Grave, Scrap Golem, Scrap Recycler and Infinite Impermanence. He begins the game with a Normal Summon of Scrap Recycler sending Orcust Harp Horror from his Deck to the Graveyard. He banishes it for its effect and uses a Called by the Grave when Alex discards Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Kota uses the Special Summoned Orcust Knightmare and Scrap Recycler to make Galatea, the Orcust Automaton. Kota banishes the Orcust Knightmare from the Graveyard to send World Legacy – “World Wand” which then gets banished to Special Summon the Orcust Knightmare that’s banished. Galatea shuffles the banished World Legacy – “World Wand” to set and activate Orcustrated Babel. Next Kota Xyz Summons Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star using Galatea and uses its effect to attach the banished Orcust Harp Horror as material. Finally he Link Summons I:P Masquerena using Dingirsu and Orcust Knightmare, sets 2 Spells or Traps and ends turn.


Alex has Monster Reborn, Thunder Dragon Fusion, Thunder Dragonduo, and Batteryman Solar and draws Thunder Dragon for turn. He discards it and the second copy to have a single Thunder Dragon in hand. Alex Normal Summons Batteryman Solar but its effect is stopped by Infinite Impermanence. He tributes Batteryman Solar to Special Summon Thunder Dragon Colossus from his Extra Deck. Kota banishes Orcust Harp Horror to Special Summon Orcust Knightmare from his deck and uses Masquerena’s effect to Link Summon Knightmare Unicorn discarding Scrap Golem to return Colossus to Extra Deck. Alex activates Thunder Dragon Fusion shuffling back 2 Thunder Dragon from his Graveyard into his deck to Fusion Summon another Thunder Dragon Colossus. Again he discards Thunder Dragon twice to keep just the third copy in hand.  He activates Monster Reborn targeting Kota’s Dingirsu and Kota banishes Orcust Knightmare from Graveyard to send Orcust Cymbal Skeleton from Deck. It is at this point Kota realises he made a mistake earlier in the turn. Dingirsu is Special Summoned and Alex uses its effect sending Orcustrated Babel to the graveyard. In Battle Phase, Colossus attacks over Knightmare Uncorn and Dingirsu attacks for 2600 putting Kota on 5000 LP. Alex ends his turn.

Kota draws Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage for turn and begins by banishing Orcust Cymbal Skeleton from the Graveyard to Special Summon Galatea, the Orcust Automaton from the Graveyard. Next he banishes Orcust Knightmare from the Graveyard to send World Legacy – “World Wand” to the Graveyard and banishes that to summon a banished Orcust Harp Horror. Galatea shuffles back World Legacy – “World Wand” to set Orcust Crescendo from deck. Galatea and Harp are used to Link summon Longirsu the Orcust Orchestrator and Kota uses Longirsu to shuffle back his banished Orcust Knightmare and Orcust Cymbal Skeleton to send the Dingirsu Alex controls to the graveyard. He Xyz Summons Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star using Longirsu and sends Thunder Dragon Colossus to the Graveyard. Kota banishes Orcust Harp Horror from Graveyard to Special Summon Orcust Cymbal Skeleton from deck and attacks directly with his two monsters to put Alex on 4200 LP. In Main Phase 2 Kota Link Summons Galatea, the Orcust Automaton and discards the Sky Striker – Mobilize – Engage in his hand to add back Orcustrated Babel from the Graveyard and activates the Babel.

T16 gameplay

Alex draws Thunder Dragonhawk for turn and begins by banishing the Thunder Dragon Fusion from his Graveyard to add Thunder Dragonroar from deck to hand. He discards Thunder Dragonroar but Kota banishes it with Called by the Grave. Alex proceeds to discard Thunder Dragonhawk to Special Summon the Thunder Dragonroar and tributes it to Special Summon Thunder Dragon Colossus. Kota banishes an Orcust Cymbal Skeleton from his Graveyard to Special Summon back Longirsu, the Orcust Orchestrator. Using Longirsu he shuffles back a banished Orcust Knightmare and Orcust Cymbal Skeleton to send Colossus to the graveyard. Alex banishes Thunder Dragon and a Colossus to Special Summon Thunder Dragonduo and attacks over Longirsu before ending his turn. During the End Phase, Kota activates Galatea, the Orcust Automaton shuffling back a banished Orcust Harp Horror to set an Orchestrated Return from his deck.

Kota draws a second copy of Orchestrated Return for turn. He activates the Set one sending his Galatea from Field to the Graveyard to draw 2 copies of Instant Fusion. He activates one copy paying 1000 Life Points to Fusion Summon Thousand-Eyes Restrict, attaching Thunder Dragonduo to it. During the End Phase, the Thousand-Eyes Restrict is sent to graveyard along with Thunder Dragonduo.

Alex draws Allure of Darkness for turn and activates it but doesn’t have any Dark Monster so he discards his whole hand. He passes with no cards on field or hand.

Kota draws Orcust Cymbal Skeleton and activates an Orcustrated Return prompting Alex to concede.

T16 alex


Duel 2:

Alex chooses to go first.

Alex opens a hand of 2 copies of Batteryman Solar, Thunder Dragon, Thunder Dragondark, and Thunder Dragonmatrix. After a friendly handshake he discards Thunder Dragon and the second to keep just the third copy in his hand. He Normal Summons Batteryman Solar using its effect to send Thunder Dragonroar from his deck to the graveyard. The Batteryman is tribute to become Thunder Dragon Colossus which is immediately banished alongside a Thunder Dragondark from hand for a Thunder Dragon Titan. Kota uses Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to stop Thunder Dragondark’s effect to search. Alex ends his turn.

Kota draws and has a hand of Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion, Called by the Grave, Sky Striker Mecha – Shark Cannon, Orcustrated Babel and Orcustrated Return. He sets the Called by the Grave and ends his turn

Alex draws Infinite Impermanence and Normal Summons Batteryman Solar sending a Thunder Dragondark from his Deck to the Graveyard. He discards Thunder Dragonamatrix to increase the attack of Thunder Dragon Titan and uses Titan to destroy a card. Kota responds with Called by the Grave on Thunder Dragondark. Alex attacks with both monsters and passes.

Kota draws Orcust Knightmare for turn and activates Orcustrated Babel. He discards Orcust Knightmare with Orcustrated Return drawing Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage and another Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion. Kota activates Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage to add Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones and activates Drones before turning the Token into Sky Striker Ace – Kagari but Alex uses Infinite Impermanence on the Kagari’s effect. Kota follows with Orcust Knightmare targeting Kagari and Chains Sky Striker Mecha – Shark Cannon to Special Summon Alex’s Thunder Dragon from the Graveyard. Kota sends Orcust Harp Horror from the Deck to the Graveyard and banishes it to Special Summon Orcust Cymbal Skeleton from Deck. He uses Cymbal Skeleton and Kagari to Link Summon Galatea, the Orcust Automaton.  Galatea shuffles back the Harp Horror to set an Orcust Crescendo from Kota’s deck who then uses Galatea and Thunder Dragon for Longirsu, the Orcust Orchestrator. Kota banishes Orcust Cymbal Skeleton to Special Summon back Galatea. Galatea attacks over Batteryman Solar and then Longirsu returns 2 banished Orcust monsters to the deck to send Thunder Dragon Titan to the graveyard. Kota Xyz summons Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star using the Longirsu and ends his turn.
