Top 16 Feature Match: Jeanlou Bernard (Spellbook) vs Fillippo Galletti (Dragon Ruler)

We’re only two rounds away from finding out which European Duelists will be at the World Championship in Las Vegas later this year! Here we are at the top 16, with Belgian National Champion Jeanlou Bernard facing off against Italy’s Filippo Galletti. Let’s see who will get that one step closer to the World Championships!

Before the match Bernard told me he seems to owe his eternal soul to friend Nicolas Pirastesh – the reason seemingly nonexistent. Maybe it was his overwhelming influence that allowed Bernard to win the dice roll. Either way, the result was that he would be starting us off.

He [ns]ed [sb mag] and it was stopped in it’s tracks by [veiler]. [sb tower] and a set card ended the turn.

Galletti used [stream] to summoned [tidal] from the Deck, quickly followed by it’s friend [redox] thanks to a [reactan]. [pwwb] sent Tidal to the top of the Deck, costing Bernard a [sb life]. [rejuv] drew him four cards and play was back to the Belgian.

Life was sent to the bottom of the Deck to draw him another card through Tower, and Bernard’s only move was to set a backrow and switch Magician to defence.

[burner] was activated and [maxx] would punish every [ss] made by the Italian this turn. He decided not to do any more and passed with one set.

Bernard entered his Standby Phase and flipped Wing Blast, discarding [sb cres] to target a chained [chalice] (on Blaster). Tower’s effect was used and Bernard entered his [mp], activating Library of the Crescent – selecting [sb jud], [sb master] and [sb fate]. Master was randomly selected and Bernard played [sb sec]. He searched Judgment and activated it, following up with [sb hall]. Master was next, revealing [sb eternity] and copying Secrets, fishing out a Fate. It was activated, banishing two to set Spellbook Magician. That was flipped to search a second Fate, and Eternity returned Judgment to the hand. Fate was set and in the [ep] Bernard fully set up, searching four Spellbook cards and [ss]ing [jowgen] in defence.

This was going to be a tough situation for Galletti to fight back from, but he would give it his all… with an attack from Blaster. It didn’t get very far as Fate was flipped, banishing two Spellbooks and setting Blaster.

Bernard activated Judgment after drawing for Tower, and then played [upstart]. Secrets was next, netting an Eternity. [kycoo] was Summoned with the brief to destroy all ghosts (and Dragons), and Eternity returned Fate to the Belgian. Master revealed Life and copied Secrets to take [sb wisdom] from the Deck. Bernard was collecting cards! [sb power] was used on Magician which, on 2400, ran over Blaster searching another Wisdom. Jowgen had been switched to attack and hit for 1100, while Kycoo kicked in for 2600. The Italian was on 5600. [mp2] saw three cards set and Judgment refilled his hand.

Seeing his next card, Galletti decided it would be more productive to utilise his Side Deck and conceeded.

Siding was refreshingly fast and both players shuffled up so that Galletti could proceed. He activated Burner’s effect to Summon Blaster, and [maxx] traded off for Bernard. [sarco] was next and banished [tdrag], replacing itself. A second Sarcophagus gave the Italian Duelist two turns before [storm] was his.

Bernard simply set two [st] cards and passed.

Blaster banished Burner and Tidal to [ss] itself and Stream made it’s way to Galletti’s hand. Stream discarded [redox] to Summon Tidal from Deck and Bernard responded with [summon limit]. [mst] dealt with this but not with the second one flipped! Blaster attacked and Galletti passed.

Bernard set two and revealed one of them to be [sj] as Galletti played his newly claimed Heavy Storm.

At the point Galletti used Blaster’s effect to destroy the Summon Limit Bernard simply shuffled up his cards: there was no way back from the kind of advantage his opponent had, much like he had in the first game.

[sb jud] was the first play for Bernard in the decider, followed by Secrets and a Summoned Magician. It searched out Tower, revealed for Master to copy Secrets and search Fate. This was looking like it was going to set up quite nicely for Bernard! He activated the Tower and set two, in the [ep] searching Secrets, Eternity and Master, and [ss]ing Jowgen in defence.

Galletti thought about it for a minute and passed.

Bernard used Tower in the Standby Phase and activated Fate, banishing two from the graveyard to set his Magician. He flipped it and searched out Star Hall, which he activated. Eternity found Judgment which was activated, and Secrets came next. It fished out a Magician which was Summoned and searched a Fate. Master revealed Power and copied Secrets, searching Wisdom. Power boosted a Magician to 2000 and the Battle Phase caused 3700 damage. Judgment refilled his hand in the End Phase with a Secrets, Power and Life.

The Italian didn’t look at the card he drew for about 30 seconds, visually praying it was something to help him out of this situation. It was! [storm] came down and forced out Wisdom to protect Jowgen, and Fate to set a Magician. Summon Limit and Wing Blast were collateral damage and Galletti sensed blood. He Summoned Reactan and attacked over Jowgen. Burner’s effect got a Blaster and Tempest was [ss]ed in [mp2]. They combined to make a [sack]. One of the tokens he spawned was sacrificed to destroy the set Magician and [rejuv] netted two cards in the [ep].

Bernard played Judgment before Summoning Kycoo. Power made it 2800 and Reactan bit the dust, Power searching a Tower. Magician attacked the last token before [mp2] bought about a [sb life] – countered, reluctantly, by an [mst] which added to Judgment’s count. Secrets found a Fate and Bernard set his hand before adding three cards with Judgment and [ss]ing a Magician in defence. Time on the round was called in this turn.

Galletti used Dracossack to make some tokens, one of which bit the dust to destroy a set [summon limit]. [sarco] removed Redox, searching another. Stream was used to bring Tidal out, soon to be banished by [7ss] and replace itself it the hand. Burner was next, bringing out Blaster, and Galletti tributed Dracossack and it’s token for Tidal. [11] was next, pinching Kycoo from the Spellbook side of the field to join his Xyz Spellcaster friend.

Tempest and Blaster revived themselves from the graveyard and we entered the Battle Phase. After clearing out the Magicians and nipping at the Belgian’s LP it was 700-3300. When Bernard went to use Tower in the Standby Phase, a flipped [mst] chained to the effect. With nothing else, Bernard flopped his cards on the table and conceeded.

[h2]Filippo Galletti moves on to the top eight, one win away from the World Championships![/h2]
