Top 16 Feature Match: Joao Silva vs. Nikos Houris

Joao Silva is a successful Portuguese player and he’s running Synchro Monarchs. Nikos Houris from Greece is running Blackwings; this should get interesting.

Houris won the die roll and opted to go first. He Set 2 spells or traps, Summoned [shura] and Silva entered his first turn.

[duality] revealed [duality], [raiza] and [mobius]. The Frost Monarch was picked, Silva shuffled his deck and activated [soul ex] next. He Tributed it to Summon [mobius] and Houris was quick to activate [warning] to negate the Summon and keep his other back row card.

Houris had [duality] and it revealed [gale], [hole] and [bora]. He thought for a second, checked his face-down card and picked [gale]. Without any other actions, he passed.

Play was back to Silva and he Summoned [swap]. He used its effect to send [treeborn] to his Graveyard. He attacked with [swap], returned the Frog to his hand in Main Phase 2 and ended without a field.

[bora] came out for Houris and it attacked directly.

Silva started his turn by returning [treeborn] to his field. He Summoned [caius] next, removed [bora] and attacked directly for 2400 damage. His hand was cluttered with monsters, so all he could do was pass.

[sirocco] was Summoned and [gale] followed as a Special Summon. The effect of [gale] was used on [caius], both monsters were Tuned to [stardust] and [dad] came out as well! The effect of [dad] got rid of [caius] and attacks followed, leaving Silva with only 1000 Life Points. Houris Set a spell or trap and ended.

Silva was standing with his back to the wall. He had to come up with something and he had only little time to do so. He Special Summoned [treeborn] back to the field, discarded another copy of [treeborn] to Special Summon [swap], he used its effect to send [ronin] from his Deck to his Graveyard and Tributed both [treeborn] and [swap] for [ladd]! Houris gave him a thumbs up, so the Dragon hit the field. An attack into [stardust] was declared, but Houris flipped [bom]. The effect of [ladd] kicked in, negating [bom], but reducing its ATK. [stardust] destroyed [ladd] in Battle and another effect of [stardust] kicked in, Special Summoning [swap]. This helped Silva to send another copy of [swap] to his Graveyard as well. He returned the [swap] on the field to his hand in Main Phase 2 and was done with his turn.

[stardust] tried to attack for Game, but [fader] came down and ended the Battle Phase. In Main Phase 2, Houris used [dad]'[s] effect to destroy [fader] and after Setting a spell or trap, he passed.

Silva returned [treeborn]. He Tributed it for [caius] and removed [dad] from the game, dealing 1000 damage. [swap] was Special Summoned by discarding yet another copy of [treeborn], it allowed Silva to send the last copy of [swap] to his Graveyard, he returned [caius] to his hand in Main Phase 2 via the effect of [swap], Special Summoned [ronin] with its own effect, removing one copy of [swap] and play was back to Houris.

Wow, it really looked like Houris had that game in the bag already, but Silva kept on surviving on the brink of defeat. However, Houris finally found an answer: [hole] was used to wipe the field, [kalut] was Summoned and an attack for Game followed!

Nikos Houris wins the first Duel!

Joao Silva only drew 2 or 3 non Spell or Trap Cards in the first Duel, so he had next to no protection against Nikos Houris’ Blackwing monsters. Both players checked their Side Decks and swapped some cards, trying to improve their chances of winning yet another game or turning the match around.

Joao Silva opted to go first in the second Duel. He drew his opening 6 and activated [duality], revealing [soul ex], [swap] and [thestalos]. He Summoned [swap] and used its effect to send [treeborn] to his Graveyard. He returned [swap] to his hand and passed for his turn.

[allure] allowed Houris to draw 2 new cards. He removed [sirocco] from game, Summoned [radiance], attacked directly, but [fader] came down and stopped the attack from concluding. 2 Spell or Trap Cards were Set and Silva was on again.

Silva wanted to bring [treeborn] back, but a [crow] in response removed it from game. [cold wave] was activated at the beginning of the Main Phase, [caius] was Summoned and it removed [warning] from game and an attack over [radiance] followed. Silva passed for his turn. Even without the [treeborn], he was in a good position.

Houris had [sirocco] and attacked into [caius]. [kalut] was discarded in the Damage Step to finish off the Monarch.

[noex] removed a Set [hole] from game. Silva discarded [snowman] to Special Summon [swap], Tributed the Frog for [thestalos] and this allowed him to discard [warning] from Houris’ hand.

Houris drew for his turn and was left with only the one card he just drew. He thought for a while before activating [reborn], an amazing topdeck! He brought back a Monarch and had it trade with [thestalos] before he passed.

Silva passed without any actions.

Houris drew into [duality] and he immediately picked up [dad]. He seemed to know about the number of Darks in his Graveyard.

[treeborn] came back and [fishborg] was next. Both were Tuned to [fsynch] and Silva drew for his turn. He passed and knew what was next.

Houris Special Summoned [dad] and used its effect to destroy [fsynch]. He attacked directly, Set a spell or trap and passed.

[treeborn] was Special Summoned once more. [fishborg] was next and Silva checked his Graveyard before Tributing them for [ladd]. He attacked into [dad] and Houris flipped [drain]. [ladd]'[s] effect negated the Continuous Trap Card and destroyed it, but [ladd] lost some ATK in the process and was destroyed in Battle. Silva thought for a bit before returning [snowman] to the field. He passed.

Houris used the effect of [dad] to destroy [snowman]. He attacked directly and the attack concluded.

Silva passed without any actions.

Houris attacked again and the attack went through. Play was back to Silva once more.

He brought back [treeborn], Special Summoned [fishborg], Tuned them to [fsynch], drew a card and Tributed the Synchro Monster for [dark dust spirit]. He attacked directly and was done with his turn, with [dark dust spirit] returning to his hand during the End Phase.

Houris had [bora] and Special Summoned [shura]. He attacked, but [fader] came down.

[treeborn] returned once more, [fishborg] did so, too, both were Tuned to [fsynch], then [dark dust spirit] hit the field, Silva responded by activating [bth] and everything left the field. Silva Set a spell or trap and passed.

Houris had [bora], but a [bth] from Silva saved the day.

It was his turn, he Special Summoned [treeborn] and passed.

Nothing happened on the following turn.

Silva passed without any actions, too.

Houris Set a Spell or Trap Card.

Silva Tributed [treeborn] for [raiza], but [bom] was Chained.

Houris had [noc] and he Set a spell or trap.

Silva simply returned [treeborn] once more and he Set a Spell or Trap Card.

Houris Set a second spell or trap.

Silva flipped [mst] during the End Phase, he had [caius] and it was flipped face-down by another [bom].

Houris now drew into [shura]! He stomped over [caius], Special Summoned [gale] from his Deck and the following attack won him the Duel!!!

The crowd went really wild during this game! It was going back and forth and it was very hard to follow at times. Both players were drawing for their turns, performing one quick move and play was back to their opponent.

In the end, Nikos Houris came out as the winner of the Duel and he celebrated together with his fans that followed the match on the big screen!
