Top 16: Patrik Rieder (Dragon Rulers) vs Luke Smythe (Dragon Rulers)

Mirror matches are never fun for the players, but they can be fun to watch! Luke Smythe is a consistent top-8 player and faces off against Patrik Rieder in the top-16 of the epic London YCS! Both players are playing Dragon Rulers so lets see how they deal with their own combos thrown back at themselves!

Rieder wins the roll and goes first!

Rieder sets three [fd] [sts] and ends his turn, gauging his opponent.
[br]
Smythe obliges to show him a little of his skills and uses [tidal]’s effect to discard another [tidal] and get [blaster] into his Graveyard. [blaster] then does his stuff, banishing [redox] and [tdrag] from hand. [redox] and [tdrag] get a further copy of themselves from the Deck. Smythe attacks directly with no response from Rieder, sets one [fd] [st] and ends turn.

Rieder sets one more [fd] [st] and passes back to Smythe.
[br]
[blaster] returns to hand and reactivates, banishing [tidal] and [tdrag] who in turn again get their twins to hand. [blaster] enters the field, and a very similar attack goes through and Smythe sets one [fd] [st] and ends his turn.
[br]
Rieder opens with [6s] and declares three and four. His precognition pays off and he draws three cards. He plays [7ss] and banishes [tdrag]. [ravine] changes the field and is activated, discarding [tdrag] to bring [redox] to hand. [maxx] and [tidal] are banished and [redox] is summoned in [def]. [tidal]’s effect activates afer being banished and brings another [tidal] to hand. [corseca] is Normal Summoned and is used to Synchro Summon [colossal fighter]! [colossal fighter] attacks [blaster] destroying both Monsters, but [colossal fighter]’s effect activates, bringing himself back and attacking directly! Rieder sets one [fd] [st] and finishes his turn.

Smythe activates [redox]’s effect, banishing [blaster] from his Graveyard and [tdrag] from his hand and Special Summons [redox] in Face-Up [def]. He sets one [fd] [st]. A defensive play!
[br]
Rieder’s [ravine] discards a [trigon] and gets [blaster] into his Graveyard. [blaster] doesn’t stay there for long as [corseca] and [redox] are banished to summon [blaster] to the field. [redox] bringing another [redox] to hand in the process! [debris] is Normal Summoned and Special Summons [trigon]. They both disappear from the field and [fairy dragon] comes into play! [fairy dragon]’s effect activates to destroy [ravine] getting [ravine] to hand and allowing Rieder to gain 1000 [lp]. [debris] and [tdrag] are banished and [tidal] is Special Summoned, [tdrag] also gets another [tdrag] to hand! Rieder then Xyz Summons [sack]! Smythe doesn’t like it, and [bom] hides it from his sight.

[redox] returns to Smythe’s hand. He doesn’t like the sight of Rieder’s back row and uses [break] to discard a [tidal] and destroy a waiting [tt]. [blaster] and [trigon] discard and destroy a [trap stun] and a [mst] clears another [trap stun] from the field. He Normal Summons a [debris] and targets his fallen [trigon], Rieder sends him a [warning]! Smythe giggles nervously, and uses [ravine] to discard [redox] and get another [redox] in the Graveyard. He banishes [trigon] and [debris] to Special Summon [blaster] banishes [redox] and [tidal] to Special Summon [redox]. All of it leads to an Xyz Summon of [big]! [big] detaches a material and takes control of [sack]! Smythe detaches a material and places two tokens on the field, one of which is tributed to destroy [colossal fighter].

[blaster] returns to hand and Smythe laughs. “I do not win this game!” he remarks. Rieder places his Graveyard in front of him and frantically searching for his win. He plays [debris] and Special Summons [trigon], Synchro Summoning [black rose]. [black rose] destroys the field and Rieder shows he has two Dragons that he can summon.

Smythe concedes game one!

[b]Game 2[/b]

[br]
Smythe starts and sets three [fd] [sts], playing cautiously.
[br]
Rieder follows suit with a mirrored play.
[br]
Smythe sets one more [fd] [st], waiting for Rieder’s move.
[br]
Rieder makes it! He plays [7ss] and banishes [tdrag] using [tdrag] to get [tdrag]. He Normal Summons [trooper] and discards three cards, it’s a good one and he gets two [redox] and a [maxx] in his grave! He plays [ravine], discarding [tdrag] and getting [blaster] to his Graveyard. He banishes [redox] and [tdrag] to Special summon [blaster] and gets [redox] to his hand. He attacks directly and it goes through!

[6s] is [trap stun] straight away and Smythe rethinks his tactics. He discards [tdrag] and [debris] to get [blaster] to hand. [redox] is Special Summoned by banishing [debris] and [blaster]. [blaster]’s effect gets [f guard] to hand. Smythe Normal Summons [f guard] and Synchro Summons [crimson blader], attacking [trooper]!
[br]
[blaster] returns to hand and Rieder’s turn begins with [ravine], discarding [redox] to get [tidal] into the Graveyard. He activates [pwwb] and returns [crimson blader] to the Extra Deck. He puts down one [fd] [st] and ends his turn.
[br]
Smythe attempts to Special Summon [redox] by banishing [tdrag] [f guard] but he is [debunk]ed! [tdrag] still searches and gets another [tdrag] to hand. Smythe sets one [fd] [st] and reluctantly ends his turn.
[br]
[ravine] searches for Rieder again, discarding [tidal] and getting [trigon] to the Graveyard. He banishes [maxx] and [trooper] to Special Summon [redox] and Smythe discards a [maxx]. Rieder doesn’t seem to mind and continues by banishing [tdrag] and [blaster] to Special Summon [tidal]. [tdrag] and [corseca] come from the Deck to Rieder’s hand and he Normal Summons [corseca]. He attacks directly with [corseca] and [redox], but [tidal] meets a [bom]. In [mp2] he Synchro Summons [scrap dragon] and activates to target Smythe’s [fd] [return] but Smythe has other plans. He activates the Trap and brings back [redox], [tdrag], [blaster] and [f guard]! Rieder ends his turn with nothing else to do.

The Dragons all return to Smythe’s hand except [f guard] who is rebanished. Smythe plays [mst] on Rieder’s [pwwb] and it’s activated in response on Smythe’s [fd] [mst]! Smythe chains the [mst] and targets Rieder’s [return], which is activated returning two [redox] and one [tdrag]. Smythe Special Summons a [blaster] by banishing [tdrag] and [tidal]. He gets [corseca] and [tdrag] to hand using [tdrag] and [tidal]. He banishes [tidal] and [maxx] to get [redox], Xyz Summons [sack], detaching for two tokens. He then Normal Summons [corseca], uses [corseca] and the Tokens and Xyz Summon [arm] who attaches to [sack] and attacks [scrap dragon] for game!

Time has been called and this game will only last four turns! Rieder wins the roll and goes first. [7ss] is played and banishes [tdrag] who in turn gets [debris]. [ravine] is played and a [tidal] is discarded to get [trigon]. [debris] is summoned and Smythe discards [maxx]. [debris] summons [trigon] and [fairy dragon] is Synchro Summoned. [ravine] is destroyed and Rieder gains 1000 [lp] and another [ravine] to hand. He sets two and ends his turn.

Smythe uses [mst] to destroy a [6s], which is activated but simply discards one card from the top of the deck. He uses his second [mst] to destroy [trap stun]. He sets one [fd] Monster Card and two [fd] [sts] and waits to see if he can win this.

Rieder plays [ravine] and [fairy dragon] destroys it for a further 1000 [lp] and get another [ravine] to hand. He banishes [debris] and [tdrag] to Special Summon [blaster], [tdrag] getting [debris]. He Xyz Summons a [sack] and destroys a token, destroying Smythe’s [break]. He Normal Summons [debris] who Special Summons [trigon], Synchro Summong [black rose] who destroys Smythe’s universe. He Special Summons [tidal], setting one [fd] [st] and Smythe concedes!
