Top 32 Feature Match: Merlin Schumacher vs. Vincent Ralambomiadana

We picked a great match for the top 32: Vincent [rala], a French Duelist who won an American YCS with his version of the “French Twilight” is facing Merlin Schumacher, the Duelist we featured in round 2 of this weekend’s tournament and who obviously made it all the way to the tops.

Both players enrolled in friendly chatter prior to the start of the round. [rala] rolled a 6, which was already impressive on its own, but even more so, considering Schumacher only rolled a 1. Naturally, he opted to go first.

[rala]’s opening move was a [rota], bringing him [kagemusha] from his deck. He added the little Tuner to his hand, used [upstart] to draw a new card, raising Schumacher’s Life Points by 1000 points, [kageki] came down and [kagemusha] followed. Both were Tuned to [shi en], [rala] Set 3 spells or traps and he was done with his first turn.

Schumacher Set 3 spells or traps and a monster. [mst] during the [ep] hit [dustshoot] [dash] certainly not the target [rala] wanted to hit!

[grandmaster] came down and [kizan] followed. [grandmaster] stomped over [aklys] and both [kizan] as well as [shi en] attacked directly.

Back to Schumacher, who [ns]ed [legionnaire]. [rala] had a [warning] to deal with the threat! Schumacher flipped [7tools], negating his opponent’s Counter Trap Card and making sure [legionnaire] would hit the field! [legionnaire] then equipped itself with [aklys]. The effect of [legionnaire] was used and [aklys] was sent to the Graveyard. Schumacher targeted [shi en] and [rala] opted to destroy [kizan] instead. [aklys] triggered and this time [grandmaster] left the field. [shi en] was still there.

[rala] sent [shi en] in [legionnaire]. The attack resolved and Schumacher lost his only monster. [rala] checked the effect of [aklys] again, he Set a monster and passed.

“Sometimes, Yu-Gi-Oh! is SUCH A COOL GAME!”, Schumacher explained, when he [ns]ed the [legionnaire] he drew from the top of his deck! It wasn’t meant to be, however, as [rala] revealed his last Set spell or trap: [bom]!

In his following turn, [rala] also drew a pretty strong card: [grandmaster]. Schumacher chuckled and went for his Side Deck.

Vincent [rala]’s Six Samurais overcome Schumacher’s Dragunities in the first Duel!

“The Six Samurai are pretty strong, it’s always a very close call”, Schumacher remarked. Both players were rather quick when it came to Side Decking and after only little interruption, we proceded with the second game.

This time it was Schumacher who had the advantage of going first.

He activated [ravine], discarding [phalanx] for the effect of the Field Spell Card to search his deck for [dux]. He [ns]ed [dux], brought back [phalanx], used the effect of [phalanx] to unequip it, Tuned both of his monster to [vaja], then brought back [phalanx] once more and after using its effect once more and Tuning both monsters together, he had [sdd] on the field. He Set 2 spells or traps and was done with his impressive first turn.

[rala] also had a good opening: [smoke] allowed him to search his deck for [kagemusha]. He followed it up with [portal], then [united] and down came [kagemusha]! Schumacher flipped [warning]! [rala] had one more Set spell or trap and he was finished with his turn.

Both decks did exactly what they were supposed to be, but Schumacher’s [warning] gave him the upper hand for the time being. Now it was important to not lose the advantage! He discarded [sdam] for [dux]. He [ns]ed it once more, did the combo with [phalanx] and after some more comboing, we welcomed [scrap dragon] to the field. [ravine] was destroyed by its effect to destroy [portal]. Then both Synchro Monsters attacked directly successfully and Schumacher passed.

With [portal] out of the equasion and only 3 cards left in his hand to fight the overwhelming power of both of Schumacher’s Synchro Monsters, [rala] had to come up with something. He used [dust], targeting the face-down spell or trap on Schumacher’s side of the field. [sdd] negated the effect. [hand] was [ns]ed next. [grandmaster] followed. That meant 2 Counters on [united] and [rala] Tributed it to draw 2 new cards. [hand] left the field to destroy [scrap dragon] and next in line was [kizan]. Both monsters attacked directly and [rala] was done. Almost done, to be more precise, as he had [crow] in the End Phase for [sdd]!!! What a comeback!

[terraforming] for [ravine]. He Summoned [dux], back came [phalanx], [vaja] was next, then [phalanx] came back and just a second later, [tra] was on the field. It attacked over [grandmaster] and Schumacher passed.

This Duel went back and forth! Both Duelists had flipped the table once at this point, but it was up to [rala] again. He brought out [kageki]. He used the effect so [ss] [kagemusha]. He Tuned all of his monsters to [wurm]! [tra] and Schumacher’s face-down spell or trap were removed to his hand / Extra Deck.

He showed [hole] and a monster and this time it was [rala] who went for his Side Deck!

Merlin Schumacher comes back to win the second Duel!

[rala] started the final Duel and he did so with [sss], fetching [kagemusha] from his deck. He Summoned [kageki] to the field, but Schumacher was quick to discard [veiler] so he couldn’t bring out any more monsters! 3 spells or traps went face-down and [rala] passed.

Giant Trunade was supposed to set up a big play for Schumacher!

[trunade] was next, but [rala] wanted to make sure he could Summon [shi en] to the field next turn, so he activated [sj]! Schumacher [ns]ed [aklys], but [warning] destroyed that card, too. Only 2000 Life Points left for [rala]. Schumacher Set 2 spells or traps and he passed.

This time it was [rala] who had the [trunade]! He brought out [kagemusha], then [grandmaster], he Tuned the lower level monsters to [shi en] and attacks followed. Back to Schumacher, who was suddenly also running out of Life Points!

He Set a card to each zone and passed.

Grandmaster and Shi En were dedicated to eliminate Schumacher's lead in Life Points!

[shi en] was sent into [dux], destroying the face-down monster in battle. [grandmaster] attacked directly. Schumacher had no response. [rala] flipped [double]!!! Schumacher extended his hand!

Vincent [rala] advances to the Top 16!

Wow! Vincent [rala] committed 6000 of his Life Points on Schumacher’s very first turn, but it all paid out in the end. He had no more cards left, but [sj], [warning] and [double], combined with [shi en] and [grandmaster] were all he needed to push through with his monsters and seal the deal!
